Oh yeah, baby. Check those boxes. Chia really knocking it out of the park this year. I'm fine with him trading 6 round picks, just please don't give him authority to do anything more damaging before this summer when the house gets cleaned.

I don't mind this. A right handed, puck moving guy that can produce some points. Makes 1 mill. So the question is, who's disappearing?

Wideman Sixth Rounder doesn't quite have the same ring.
On a one-year, $1MM contract. I don't quite understand how this fits under the cap. We are in serious cap trouble if Sekera returns this year, and there's very little chance of a deadline add now, because we simply won't be able to afford even a fourth liner.
He's had 5 points in 19 games, and for his career, 43 points in 176 games. That puts him as a 17-18 point defenceman, so he's not exactly the missing link on the PP.
He's 5'10, 183 lbs, so I don't think he's going to bring a lot of nastiness either.
He was an offensive producer at the AHL level, but he's 28 so it's a stretch to think he's going to develop that at the NHL level now.
I think we just added to our fine stable of third pairing d-men.

Somebody has to go off the roster for him to come in. Their money leaves, his arrives. It'll make little difference.
You just can't resist taking drive-by shots at this organization, can you?

....according to Cap Friendly, the Oilers have a few dollars over $59,000 in cap space, not accounting for any bonuses or the LTIR for Sekera........

But they make it so easy ;-)
Jokes about drive-bys aside there is also Rieder on IR right now. Does that give us equivalent daily cap space in the meantime? Or is that only when on LTIR?

RH Shot, +7 career including -9 this year in 19 games. 3rd pairing guy with some experience on the PP.
Was one of the guys in the Ubergate controversy this year.
If it moves Benning to the 7 hole on D, this is ok.

The trade is the pick they got for Jerabek who can't play for Wideman who is most likely a 3rd pairing guy. But he's right handed, skates well and moves the puck something the Oilers lack. There is no risk to this trade. I don't see how this can be seen as a negative. Plus it keeps Bear in the minors where he belongs to continue to develop.
Does anyone know if Sekera is even coming back this year? It's been crickets about him. The guy hasn't played much hockey in 2 years, who says he can come back at all this season.

Ya. not much to dislike given he is RH which is clearly an issue.
As far as the skating/puck moving I only know what I have read/heard today and that is that he isnt either really. He is a decent PP option at times but other than that there isn't much offense to his game.
I have zero recollection of seeing him play so perhaps there is more to him than a 6/7 but the pundits dont seem to think so.
Perhaps he can be a RHD PP option?
Big picture this makes very little impact on the season. Low chance of a negative impact in trading a really late pick while there is a chance that it makes minor improvements so that is a trade win to me.

Now they have two Bennings. This might bring you more angst than less.

I doubt that, Benning is pretty bad. Ottawa has a really good D corp right now, the fact Wideman was 3rd pair doesn't mean he's equal to a 3rd pair here, he might be above that frustrating low Oiler threshold .. here's hoping anyway.

This aint negative guys.
I thought we wanted depth?
He's just keeping Bouchard/Bear's spot warm.
Wideman is small, but it's not 1999 anymore. The Hatcher mold of NHL d man is gone. Benning was hitting less regularly anyhow. Perhaps Wideman can turn to skate backwards at least.
I hope Sekera catches Hossa-itis.
Pistol Pete the Chia pet returns to familiar old stomping grounds to find a trade partner, but at least it was not back to the big apple!
Chiarelli must be on the hot seat, trying to show he's trying. I like that better than say, doing nothing ala Tambo.

Well yes and no....I'd have preferred he'd chosen to do nothing in terms of 4 deals/signings, specifically. He doesn't hurt the Oilers with the small stuff, just the big.

My biggest issue with the Wideman trade is that Chia's approach to the defence this year is starting to feel like MacTavish's approach to fixing the goaltending in Eakins' first season where he is constantly making another mediocre move to patch a hole.
I don't think that the 6/7 defenceman is the biggest issue for the team this season, but we've seen Jerabek, Gravel, Garrison, Benning, Wideman all there now at various points since training camp started. I think the Oilers just hoped that Bouchard would come in fully ready and they wouldn't have to worry about the slot at all. Wideman's a bandaid solution at best, and more expensive than most of the other options.
Yes - if Sekera stays gone, the Oilers have some room to bring in a little more money, but not a lot of money, and using all that space with bubble guys means that if the Oilers are close, they won't be able to afford anyone who can actually make an impact at the deadline.
As for Sekera, I hope you're wrong and he doesn't pull the chute on the season, because if we can get him to any semblance of his former self, he's better than any of these scrubs.

Am I the only that thinks that taking a guy that got bounced from his previous club for being too outspoken about how dysfunctional they were and dropping him into the Oilers locker rroom may not be a great idea?

I mean, a private conversation in front of a total stranger. If he's willing to say that in front of his uber driver I'm sure he's saying it to other people.
Regardless, even if that was the first time that he talked about it outside of his teammates, do you think it will be good for the team if he comes in and starts saying, "can you believe it was 1 for 1?!?".

Then you must think the Sens should dump Duchene who's having a career year as well because he was in the care running his mouth just as much.
They were talking about their coaches and some jerk decided to secretly record it and post it. How many of us have talked about our bosses before? I am sure the coaches have had conversations about players all the time.
