Wow.
File this under, doesn't freaking matter.

Chiarelli is the architect of this disaster, this is his standard "one coaching change" allowance, then he's done.

Hitch will be interim, can't see him being any better than Mcclellan, Hitch lost his coaching mojo quite a few years ago.

What happens to Woodcroft? Woody's probably happy to be in Baker right now.

Last coached in the spring of 17 so not that long away from the game as a coach. I too wonder if his old style tactics still work in today's game but it has to be an improvement. Something had to give and it finally did. Another wait and see. I doubt very much if Q would have come here anyway. He'll likely get the job in St Louis.

Hitchock media availability here. Skip to 10:10. Only 5 minutes long but I will summarize 2 notable points.

- He says the biggest factor to taking the job was the people he knows. Lowe, Chiarelli, Gulutzan, Yawney...
- Thinks he can help McDavid. Says McDavid has a great responsibility to set the competitiveness of the team, and that he is carrying too much of the burden.

I sure he won’t need an Uber in San Jose. Joe would give him a lift.

This is a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, TMac finally got the axe he should have actually gotten before the season began, because now the new coach has to start by cleaning up the godawful mess he left behind.

Hitchcock-coached teams tend towards supporting the goalies with solid defensive systems, so it's quite possible that Talbot could get a new lease on life playing under him because he will now be hung out to dry by his defense less often than he would be under TMac's watch. Meanwhile, Koskinen could really thrive in his system, and the more solid the Oil's goaltending and defense situation becomes, the more hockey games they will win.

On the other hand, Hitch is pretty old. I get the comparisons to when Quinn was brought in, particularly since he also had to coach under a GM who was utterly clueless when it came to major player movement and asset management. However, Hitch has a much different style of coaching than Quinn did, so I am curious to see how much the Oil play as a team now that he's behind the bench.

After listening to Hitch talk I'm actually looking forward to see the show unfold, its going to be entertaining to say the least!

If all he does is force players to finish their freaking checks.. I'll be happy.

So will he turn McDavid in to a 75 point two way player! Worked with Modano, right?

He’s back-checking, could even be considered a two-way player by some, but is he a “Hitchcock two-way player”. Hitch put shackles on Modano, Hull, Nash...I’m not sure I’m excited to see how he tries to mould #97’s game...

They haven't even played. I'd have 2 thoughts on this....1) give it 15 games and draw a conclusion then and 2) I don't give a damn as long as the team wins, as Modano & Hull did when Hitchcock 'shackled' them.

Modano becoming a better 2-way player under Hitch has been cited as one of the reasons they won the Cup under his tenure as coach, so I don't know that making Connor more responsible in his own end would necessarily hurt the team. That said, Connor is an eagle that should be allowed to soar free, so it's possible that Hitch may adjust his system to allow him to free-wheel whenever he's on the ice.

Man, before Hitch Modano was so NOT playing like McDavid does, Modano was all about goals for, he would get an allergic rash whenever he ventured into his own zone.. McDavid knows how to play defensive hockey, and Hitch is smart enough to let him maximize his offensive potential. I'm not worried about McD. I expect our defensive zone will have to change the most to suit Hitch, I expect fly-by, stick-swing forechecks, will be frowned upon.

I'm not seeing much in the way of shackling the only thing that happened to Modano was that his team started scoring a lot more than they were getting scored on while he was on the ice. I'm even less worried about the McPoints now but looking forward to the McPlus/Minus.
For the record Hull was 34 when he went to Dallas and still put up some pretty good numbers and Nash's best year offensively in points per game came under Hitch.

Hitch had an interview (yesterday pregame?) where he said defensively without the puck it’s his way or the highway, but with the puck on offence then he has ideas but let the players be more independent with what works for them. Which entirely sounds cool to me, and our defence (fwds and defs) have been an uncoordinated mess, often looking like one guy’s fault because of a lack of support structure.

That has always annoyed me with this team. I don't get why after 3+ years with McLellan these guys all still look like they have no idea where to go and where to send pucks in their own zone. I know hockey has a lot of randomness, but come on, Lemaire could make a bunch of plugs all look like they knew what they were doing in their own end, in the neutral zone, basically anywhere without the puck they all looked like they had a job to do and were doing something useful. We just kept having a totally uncoordinated mess. Guys making the exact same mistakes over and over (freakin Lucic just inside out blueline!!! AHH).

I personally always wished Hitch would come here. I have been craving seeing if my team could look like their players had a clue without the puck. I just want to see it once. Like something to scratch off the bucket list. Can I see the Oilers players look like they all know what they're supposed to be doing without the puck for a stretch of time, something useful? I badly want to see it. Hope it's possible.

Last season Benn had 36 goals, 79 pts in 82 games and Seguin had 40 goals, 78 pts in 82 games. So pretty much a point per game for both and right in where they have been scoring for years before he got there. Seguin scored a career high in goals so I am not seeing where he took away offense from the top guys.

After listening to Hitch talk I'm actually looking forward to see the show unfold, its going to be entertaining to say the least!

If all he does is force players to finish their freaking checks.. I'll be happy.

He even made me calm down.

I think Hitch is closer to Torts than to McLellan these days.

Good article on his personal evolution as a coach

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/ken-hitchcock-reinvented -final-years-career/

Quote:

One of the takeaways for Hitchcock was that athletes today are much, much harder on themselves than their predecessors. Every aspect of their existence is so heavily regimented — from diet and their physical conditioning to video sessions and practices—that it can all become a bit much. On a given day during that latter portion of his career, Hitchcock could wander into work and find a handful of his guys glued to screens watching their shifts from the night before. Players are almost all students of the game now and the best way to reach them is through detailed explanations, not enhanced decibel levels. Hitchcock tried to make his points direct and concise, believing brevity would help players turn the page on miscues, rather than letting mistakes become a mental drain.

“This is a (generation) that needs to move on quickly,” he said.

That’s why humour is another element Hitchcock incorporated in his teachings.

“It becomes, ‘It’s not as bad as you think’,” he said of injecting the odd chuckle into coaching. “You bring that aspect into it and I think it increases the learning curve.”

Creating laughs is no problem for Hitchcock, who is universally acknowledged as a people person.

“Get him outside the rink and he’s a hoot,” said Roenick, who admitted his own flamboyant personality caused some clashes with Hitchcock, but added the two always shared a mutual respect. “You get him on a golf course and he’ll hold court. He’ll have people enthralled, laughing, just totally engaged in what he’s talking about. That’s a very hard trait to master.”

These are things McLellan hasn't figured out yet.

A recent Torts quote as well

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
John Tortorella says the NHL has turned into a F-A-W league -- "find a way to win." He doesn't bother correcting every error now. "Holy crap it's just a game filled with mistakes."

Some coaches have learned you can't go insane on players now for every mistake. The key to success is playing faster and being willing to push that balance of risk/reward as far as you can take it, not trying to eliminate all risk at any cost.

Hitch's top offensive guys did fine in his last year coaching in Dallas. He let the kids do their thing, but he also dramatically decreased the shot quality Dallas allowed. Dallas just wasn't too good, and Spezza had a stinker season and they ended up 3 points out of a spot.

Not expecting Hitch to turn some crap into gold, but it would be nice to see these guys not looking like life is over after every mistake they make, and it would be nice to see something resembling an NHL quality structure and set play making in at least 1 zone of the ice.

And please fire one or all of Chia, MacT, Lowe or Howson please.

Chia has now used his one "Get out of being fired for incompetence" card by replacing TMac with Hitch. If Hitch actually gets this team far, unfortunately it means that Chia will likely be sticking around. If the Hitch experiment fails, expect to see Chiapet kicked out on his ass at the end of the season.

In both scenarios, I do not see the OBC being shipped out. Sigh.

So, I had a random thought.

Todd got let go in San Jose, with Hitchcock taking over from him.

Doesn't Todd's family still live in San Jose?

I neat video using some proprietary stats that some media guys that are able to share (Mike Kelly being one of them)

https://www.tsn.ca/video/statscentre-the-hitch-effect~155922 7

Using our tiny Hitch sample size so far.

The summary of numbers:
McLellan: 28th place at forcing other teams to dump in pucks
Hitch: 1st place at forcing other teams to dump in

McLellan: 25th place at retrieving opposition dump ins and successfully turning them into zone exits
Hitch: 1st at doing the above

Overall, 20% less time spent in the defensive zone defending opposition's possession under Hitch

We'll see if it holds hehe

Holy butt, that’s staggering. Not overly surprised seeing those numbers from the TMac era as it backs up what we all witnessed, the subject of many complaints around here. That large of a turnaround is just... wow. Thanks for sharing!

I'd love to see those stats for TMac's entire tenure here. Probably pretty ugly (looking at you, Kris Russell).

If McLellan was here still, does anyone think he would have played Talbot another game before either January, or until Koskinen had a really bad run? I think McLellan was going to shelf him after that Vegas game.

Hitch went on a rant in his presser today about how you have to play your 2nd guy once every 1-2 weeks minimum so they keep a rhythm, and how he made a bad mistake in his past letting his backup go stale and when his starter was hurt, cold guy came in and it all went bad. That sounds like McLellan goalie handling :)

Funny how every Hitchcock presser, if you didn't know better you would think Hitch is taking little shots at McLellan. He's definitely not, but still funny as a fan that has been paying attention for the last few years.

I've liked what I've seen from Hitchcock more than I thought I would. He's exceeding expectations. He does seem to have reinstilled some enjoyment back in to the game for players. They look like they're having more fun now and like they have some purpose other than just to try to keep the game deadlocked until McDavid comes and wins it.

I'd like to see some more goals, but hopefully that'll come. It does seem like there's a pretty big change overnight, and I do not think it's simply the adrenaline push from having a coach axed.

TMac kinda gave off (at least to me) a "long-term middle manager for a company with high turnover" vibe... you can almost see him being the villain in an Office Space type flick.

Hitch at least seems like a hockey coach.

Edit: And yes, I can definitely see TMac shelving Talbot, giving a nice little parting jab to the media along the way.

Hitch comes off like a guy that knows what he's doing, calm and deliberate, an encyclopedia of experience, Stanley Cup, Team Canada's, he makes you believe he has a plan, and real ideas on how to get better, and most importantly he makes his players believe, they are more confident the guy running the ship knows how to get to where they want to go. Inspiration?

After 4 years of minimal success, and the latest losing trend, McClellan's messages just got worn out, it became just words, deep down players stopped believing... except McDavid.. he's a force of nature... he's believing every shift ... as in .. be leaving a defenceman looking for his jock every shift! Oh yeah!

Kypreos just said in the 2nd intermission tonight at the org has asked HItch to be more positive with players and the media, lol.

Hmmm, they probably just have to fire him if they don't like it. He's just defending his legacy now and the massive sales job he did after he was hired. He knows the roster he has is not good enough now. He has to throw everyone else under the bus now to save his image. He's not a quitter either, and I highly doubt he's gonna sugar coat stuff anymore because the org asks him.
