TSN 1260 is reporting the Oilers made a coaching move, from Dreger.

I'm glad McLellan is out. He was simply not a good coach for the Oilers. Hiring Hitchcock worries me, it reminds me of when they went out and hired Pat Quinn.

Gotta hand it to the Oilers. They give people what they want, but still find a way to make it a sneaky and unexpected curveball. I think Hitch will get more effort from the players.
Man it’ll be weird that first game with him behind “our” bench. All those years in the 90s vs the Stars.

Yeah happy on one account, but bewildered on another. I would have felt better had they given Yawney the interim (not GG) and kept the search up.
Feel that Hitchcock hire is 15 years too late.

This will be fun to talk about, but with Chiarelli still in the GM spot, I don't see the team getting much better. The next 10-15 games will be fun though. Then back to the "How long before McDavid requests a trade?" thread.

I think Hitch is here to ride the season out. Then we fire Coach Q a dump truck of money in the off season.
Side note im happy Hitch got his chance to coach the Oilers
This forum has turned into a pessimistic cesspool of bitching and whining about the same topics consistently.

Based on what I heard ever yesterday when he was brought up, it doesn't sound like Q is ready to take a job yet. Money won't be a problem for him. He was doing shots on a ski the other day so that doesn't look like a guy ready to jump in to a job right away. He may just want to hang out and take some time off.

Unlikely seeing that they already have Hitchcock signed, but did the Blues firing Yao influence Oilers brass decision?

Sounds like it's just for the rest of the season for Hitchcock based on what Rishaugh is guessing. We shall see.

...pretty much my sentiments...hope for all the best for Hitchcock...alas, it probably is about 15 years too late, but I hope this works out, even though it will clearly be short term...

3 things:
1. good job, kick rocks McLellan
2. bizarre replacement, they can't possibly believe Hitch to be a viable long term option
and
3. if everyone knows the roster (while underperforming) still isn't good enough, then what point does it make to "salvage" a season, if they're still 2-3 good young pieces away? Or are we simply of the mindset they can't afford to tank anymore, and they need to push for the playoffs regardless, and hope that what they have in the pipeline is good enough? I don't see anything overly encouraging on the farm aside from JP, not overly confident in how Hitch handles younger, developing players. And if they do have decent short term success this season and slip into the playoffs... then what? Re-sign Hitch long term?
So many questions. They need to tank this season IMO and kick Chia to the curb as soon as the season is done. How is this not obvious.

I got an email about this and thought it was a joke!
I have absolutely no problem with this. Despised Hitchcock when he coached Dallas, but that just means more often than not, he was out-coaching us and beating us. My only worry is, has the game passed him by?

Don't forget - Hitchcock's connection to Nicholson via team Canada, so it's tangential to the Old Boys Club

If you are Katz and you have to pay McLellan the remaining part of his 3 mill salary this year plus one more year of 3 mill for next year, I don't think you are giving the green light to spend 5-6 mill on Q if he would come until you see what happens with letting McLellan go. If the Oilers miss the playoffs, the GM might not be hear so how can you authorize letting Chia hire another long term guy.
Dreger just said Hitch's status as the coach will be reevaluated at the end of the season. I thought Hitchcock was retired so I am guessing he comes in, stays for the rest of the year, then continues being retired.

Geeze, Hitch can't even get retirement right. Isn't this now his third return from retirement?
I'm just glad McLellan is out, he's a terrible coach.

...from the Oilers website...gushes over Hitchcock's impressive resume, but like so many other things related to the Oilers reflects more on the past rather than moving into the future.....

...I still won't say anything negative about Ken Hitchcock the person and hockey guru....wishing him all the best, and still wishing he would replace Don Cherry on HNIC after he completes the season in Edmonton....

All the hockey insiders are now reporting that Hitch has signed for the remainder of the season. This is a wake up call for the team. You know he will challenge the players because that is what he does. Personally, even though the roster isn't good enough, I think there are a bunch of guys on the team that could use a kick in the ass. The big thing is, if the future of the GM is in question which I assume it is if they miss the playoffs. The owner will not want to be letting Chia hire a new long term coach if he may not be here.

I think he knew the OBC when they were still the Bus Boys. He worked at United Cycle and did custom skate fittings and such. I bought a pair of VacuTacks off him back in the day, nice guy.
Had no idea he would be considered a viable coaching option in today's NHL. I think this officially nails the coffin shut on the season. The OBC in job protection mode, scapegoating and smoke and mirroring.

Haven't been paying attention to what's going on down there at all. 2 points in 2 games is a good start I suppose. For a 4th overall draft pick who was/is as big and skilled as he is, with that shot he has, I'd like to see him tread at a PPG in the AHL for sure.

I hope that Hitchcock will let Viverios run the PP which I thought was one of the reasons he was brought in. According to Gregor who was just on Lowetides show, he has talked to players and they said he doesn't run the PP which is dumb.
The roster isn't good enough but there are guys on this team that need a boot in the ass as well. Lucic being #1, Kassian, Brodziak, Khaira, Nurse, Benning, Rattie. I might even put Nuge in there as take him away from McDavid and what as he done plus he has only 4 goals.

He should be closer to 2 PPG, if he's got any chance at being an NHL first liner.

Chia's now been given the requisite changes to his complete coaching staff, and the HC position will be evaluated at the end of this season, so I'd expect Chia to be gone at season's end if the team continues to underperform, and they're starting over again in GM as HC.

I'd probably throw LD in that list as well. You can't just haul ass on the ice when you're looking for a feed from Connor on a 2 on 1, and coast/be stationary for most of the rest of the time.

Has he? He was allowed to fire a coach, but the replacement is nothing more than a 60 game training wheels gig. It has all the markings of typical Oilers short term thinking.

Well I'm happy Todd is gone. Old school coach that had a plan but not a plan b. Didn't seem interested in developing young talent either. According to former players both Oilers and San Jose he wasn't a good communicater either. This leaves Peter with all the presser on him. That being said, Hitch might have a better plan defensively but isn't he from the same mold as Todd? Old school, hard on the players. I'm guessing this is short term and Q was not ready or willing. Now I'm torn on wanting this to turn around or continue to fall apart so Peter is gone. We are not out of the woods yet. Now that Peter's job is on the line I'm not looking forward to what trades he has up his sleeve. Hopefully at seasons end Nicklson, mact t, klowe and others from this disaster of management will be shown the door and we can get some competent people there. Hey I can dream. I didn't think they get rid of Todd until we were officially eliminated from the playoffs.

So do we have the whole management team from the 2002 Olympic team now? Quinn of course is gone, but once an Oiler always an Oiler, right?
Thrilled they pulled the trigger on the coach. Hopefully this helps - I lack confidence in Hitchcock. How’ve his teams done the last several years?
Hopefully it’s a stop-gap and everyone gets axed at years end.
