Went to the public tour today. Was absolutely amazed. Such a great job by everyone involved. The sight lines are fantastic, even for the seats at the very back. I'm a bit concerned with how some of the materials will hold up (railings, carpeting everywhere), but for now it looks great. The biggest surprised for me was how neat the PCL loge was laid out. I'd like to watch a game from there.

Holy makeral, the food prices are crazy though.

Man I was way the opposite:
Entrance was massive but really underwhelming. Didn't really have any focal point to it.
Thought the whole place lacked color or anything worth looking at. Everything was pasty grey and even the massive pictures of the players gone by seemed washed out.
Went in the club lounge downstairs which were really small and joined to the one on the other side of the ice by what appeared to be a giant service corridor.
Ceilings on the lower floor were really low making the place seem clostrophobic.
The entire place seemed to lack anything worth looking at.
I was also puzzled by all the building service shutoffs being located in the exit corridors and the sight of nails sticking through the roof. I hope that stuff wasn't finished.
I am however in agreement that, although boring looking, the actual viewing arena had great sight lines.
I guess I must qualify this by saying that, compared to the old arena it's a massive upgrade... But I've been to many other new arenas like the Bridgestone arena and it was way more impressive. For me this arena was a 5/10 and not worth the money. I can also see parking being a massive nightmare on game night.

Oh yeah I definitely get wrapped up in the hype of new stuff, for sure. I see what you're saying about the lack of focal point and everything being grey. I think it's important to remember that it's far from done decoration wise. I bet once the games start, there will be artwork/logos/portraits everywhere. Most of the walls were indeed pretty plain today, but I'm sure that's just finishing work.

The mezzanine area's ceiling were definitely too low. I agree. I noticed in the concept pics that there was a lot more artwork for that area to go up so I'm sure it'll look great next month.

I'm really hoping they didn't show the finished article. There is a lot of room for statues and artwork it just appeared that most of the permanent artwork was done. if all they do is add a few framed pictures and posters in the spaces then it'll all be a bit sad. if i'm really honest it reminded me a LOT of Rexall.

I did like that they had an "all gender" bathroom. Saves me having to make a difficult decision :)

I just went. It's nice. Lots of natural light coming in. Nothing too attention grabbing though. The only highlight of it all is probably that mosaic in the Ford Hall. Aside from that, just nice a clean architecture, simple colours. Seats are comfy enough. Still have to battle to get the arm rests. Pretty sure someone is gonna get wasted really soon going down to the seats in the 200's with the super steep stairways, and you have to come and go from the very top always. The escalators to get to the top of the 200's area were nuts. Like, scaling 7-8 stories on a single escalator ride. Bet they will be down all the time. The stairwells were nice at least, concrete cracking already all over the place in them though :)

Loge seats are nice, wish I could win the lottery to have enough money to justify buying a set of them, hehe.

In general, it's just nice, and new. Mainly glad the Oilers will have good ice to play on now, and I'm sure the facilities for the players will be a big step up from what they had at Rexall. Hopefully helps with some wins.

Picked up a Bobby Nick's burger too, it was decent. Obviously not worth $14 though :)

Oh, and the urinals. At least the bathroom I saw, the style and setup was like these: http://urinalrepiarinstall.com/images/plumber-thumb/urinal-i nstallation.jpg and no dividers. Lots of people will be lining up to piss in the stalls (only 3 in the washroom I went in).

I noticed the urinal situation too. You really have to step back to use them and no dividers. If you are wondering what I'm working with, you won't have to use your imagination after lining up next to me at those washrooms!

lol, yeah, it's hard to describe how awkward the urinals looked, and the layout without dividers.

I should also mention I saw an unshaven and haggard looking MacT hanging around at Rogers Place too. I wonder if the demotion (or was it a promotion?) still haunts him.

my thoughts:
- size of it all left me a bit in awe
- Gatorade was $7.50! icon_neutral
- large quantity or bathrooms with small quantity of urinals (4-8), no bathrooms with >10 urinals
- rink/screen/seating is all top notch
- loge level is cool but the seat, albeit comfy, may make it hard to jump out of when the oilers score
- largest graphic on the wall was a 2-3 story "The Brick" sign.
- still lots of touch ups to complete inside, still roof work to finish outside
- building had a similar feel to other large arenas (Houston Rockets arena comes to mind). A bit bland looking, the service corridors comment is accurate.
- lots of big bars
- Sky Lounge wasn't open and didn't have the look I thought it would from the outside. just looks like regular seats with different (blue) lighting
- I saw kevin lowe hanging around the entrance to the casino, which was not accessible to the public at the time. he looked smug.
- ford hall should be fun pre-game, I'm hoping they have live music band serve booze there. I saw one bar down there, it may have just been a portable one though.
- lots of entry stalls/metal detectors. should make for a somewhat smooth entrance.
- free wifi in the arena

I think I need to wait to attend a hockey game there though, i feel like that will really change/enhance my impression of the place, for the better.

I was at the casino on Saturday at around noon. You are not missing much. It's almost entirely slot machines with just a few table games. No poker room. The restaurant upstairs looked really good though.

Yeah, it was nice, but it wasn't big. I was surprised there wasn't more tables or poker rooms. It lived up to the hype in regards to the look, but I expected something larger.

You're right - the steakhouse looked okay, and I plan on checking out the sports bar (Match) at some point.

I saw the Horcoff mural, Smyth mural, was wondering where the Patrick O'Sullivan and/or Rob Schremp murals were.

Sky bar was open, amazing view.

It's an amazing arena but the big thing that stuck out to me was a lot of the work that's still to be done.

The stainless steel problems on the side facing south really stuck out. I guess the issue was that they didn't peel the protective blue film off right away and it cause the panels to have that half peeled sticker look. I hope they get replaced. The side facing north is perfect though (train station side).

There are tons of places where they still had to paint. I wish they just came out and said they were behind, moved the open house back. I guess they didn't want to hear any backlash.

I liked that Horc and Smytty mural, good ol' Cup run pic. I liked it so much that I zoomed in on Smytty's face and took a pic.

I sure have, great place I enjoyed the tour which completed on the field where you were invited to throw a football around if you had one. Rogers place had a feel similar to Cowboys stadium where there was a monitor everywhere so you were never missing a moment of action!

I need to grouse a bit about my seats. I'm on the drink rail in the upper section. My field of view of the rink is obstructed by the guy in front of me, he's on the same level as my chair and table. I'm literally staring into this guys head.

I saw this picture on HF and it accurate shows what I am looking at:

http://i.imgur.com/p8QT4Yp.jpg

A huge percentage of the rink is gone into that guys head, now imagine a whole row! Keep in mind, I paid more for my seat than the guy in front of me! $400 per seat more.

I'm told the Oilers will make a riser for my seat and table so I will have an unobstructed view (how tall and what will that look like, I don't know), but there is no ETA.. a bird told me it should be completed by the home opener.

As for the arena itself, I see shades of similarity inside it from other arenas, like Phoenix, Dallas, Minnesota, and LA.

Scoreboard is beautiful.

My viewing time was 1-2 and 2pm they shut the arena down hard. I only saw an hours worth but I like what I saw.

Still mad about my seats though..

Seriously? Arghh, we're in the same boat then (upper section drink rail, section 204) and that's very frustrating. Actually the entire process with "selecting" new seats at Rogers has been a huge letdown.

Your picture doesn't show for me; can you re-host it?

Yep, extremely similar from my view I'm in 216 and I can't see the Oilers attack at all during the game. I was promised a sight line and if I don't get it, I'm getting my money back. I pay more for my seat than the guy blocking my view! So upset.

I'm told that the Oilers and Rogers place are well aware of the issue and are working on a fix. Apparently they will construct an 8 inch riser move the drink ledge forward. 8"? I'm not sure that's enough considering the incline to the rink.

I should have stayed with my original seats.. I wish my rep hadn't talked me into the drink rail.

All this worry.. I really hope they fix the issue.

I really liked it. For me, it lived up to expectations, and probably is the best arena I've been to (others being Staples Centre, BB&T Centre, Bridgestone Arena, Scotiabank Saddledome, American Airlines Arena). It actually reminds me a little bit of Bridgestone Arena... at least the Winter Gardens and how you enter into the arena. That's not a bad thing.

A few thoughts:

- The sitelines are amazing. There won't be a bad seat in the house.
- I'll probably never be able to afford them, but the loge seats are pretty awesome. That level stood out and impressed me greatly.
- Really great, open atmosphere. It's going to be electric and loud.
- Might take a couple events, but seems pretty easy to navigate. From what I can tell, you can walk around in a circle on both the upper and lower concourses; you don't have to worry about it closing off to one side like you did at Rexall.
- Appreciate the all-gender bathrooms. Didn't really look inside any of the bathrooms, but it seems like there are a lot of bathrooms with a few toilets/urinals in each. Hopefully it isn't an issue.
- The Sportsnet Club / Sky Lounge is a cool idea. It's only open to those specific ticket-holders during the game, but after the game, the Sky Lounge is open to all ticket-holder. Will definitely check that out at some point.
- Food is expensive, but it's nice to see some options other than the standard fare. It's also nice to see some local flavour (probably the only arena where perogies are a major food group).
- A little bit of an Old Boys on the Bus vibe on the wall. It's a delicate balance because you want to celebrate the past, but you also don't want to get stuck in it.
- The walls ARE a little plain and white. On the one hand, I didn't hate it because it looks fresh and clean, but a little pop would be nice. I suppose that's an easy fix though. Could be they will put more murals / pictures / art up; or it could be space to sell advertising. I think and hope a crowd and vendors will likely provide some pop in the concourses as well. In particular, I could see the Winter Gardens having a lot of vendors and sponsors, bars, and live music that will enhance the game day experience.
- Apparently there is supposed to be an Oilers HOF, but I'm not sure where that is or would be.
- Will be cool to check out the locker room at the locker room sale next year. Curious if the dressing room doors made their way over or not.

Overall, it met my expectations, and in some way passed them. I'm excited. The structure and design is well thought out and solid, and most of the suggestions to improve it are certainly possible within the structure of the new arena. It's going to be a very fun place to watch Oilers hockey and I can't wait for the season to begin.

Overall it looks like a nice building but here are the negatives I pulled from the event.

They talked about great site lines from every seat but this isn't the case, there are a few that have obstructed views and as seen above the Drink Rail ones are some of them. I believe it is section 102 and the top row that are sitting next to the cement wall seem to have obstructed views as well. Loge view on the table it seems when you are behind the net ( I didn't check all the tables out) if you sit in the middle chairs you miss 1/2 of the one end because of the table in the site line. If you stand that might get rid of it but the way the chairs were and people sitting in them seems like you will miss some of the action.
Row 1 on the upper concourse if you are sitting back in your seat you are looking through glass for some of your view. Also with the skyboxes at the top your whole site of the ice is through glass.

I also wouldn't want to be in section 230, the people in the skylounges can stand where the glass comes up to the waist but I'm sure they will be a lot of drinks spilled on the people below.
It sucks that the upper concourse doesn't have cup holders.

The upper concourse seemed very tight to walk around the 234/233 section they have tables that take up most of the room on the one side of the bar that overlooks the winter garden, then from the concession to that bar is also very narrow. I thought they said they wanted bigger concourses to move traffic (maybe just to add more bars).

The whole thing just seemed like it was all grey, i'm sure that will change when they decorate the place.

Also as season ticket holders they didn't give the normal $100 they give to seat ticket holders per seat which is surprising based on the new food/drink prices.

One thing that I don't get is people complaining about the price of food and drink. I own seasons to the Esks, I took my oldest son to the game on Saturday. I bought 2 bottles of water, it was 7.50 I think. I bought 2 cheese burger, it was 16. I bought myself a beer and my dad a beer from the girl that walks the stands, it was 18.50. It's expensive to buy food and drink at sporting events. If you go to the movies and buy a bag of popcorn and 2 drinks, it's over 20. That's for a freaking movie. If you don't want to pay for the food and drink, simple, don't buy it. Eat before you go.

To put it into perspective. I went to Chicago last year for my youngest bro's 30th. We went to a Bulls game and watched the Oilers lose to the Hawks on back to back nights. In the land where you go to the store and buy a 15 pack of pick your brand of beer for maybe $1 a beer, we were paying almost $9 AMERICAN for draft beer. There was a nice bar right behind our almost $100 per seat ticket in the 3rd deck seats where they had a whole bunch of draft. It didn't matter which kind I picked, it cost almost $9 for a glass that wasn't that big. The gourmet hotdog I had was more than $10 and most of the other things weren't much cheaper.

Everywhere is expensive.

Iron Foot Place is a fantastic alternate name to me. I bet I'll use it and now I have a nice story to go with it.

I wonder what the visitor dressing room and the Oil Kings dressing room are like. Any pics anywhere from the media on those?

Oilers figured they can't have hockey success, trying to be a league leader in other ways... (prices in USD)
https://www.statista.com/statistics/202773/beer-prices-in-th e-national-hockey-league-by-team/

$11 CAN = $8.35 USD -> 9th place?

This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but I'm glad the beer prices are so expensive. The cult of "drink as many beers as possible at the Oilers game" are a really annoying bunch, and maybe this will prevent the guy beside me (and beside you, and beside 1/8 of the people in the rink) from drinking 11 beers and being the loudest, most annoying toolbag in the world.

yeah, cheaper the beer, the more falls there will be in the 200's on those steep stairs. There will be an exact correlation.

Not to mention having to stand up 5 times per period to let them pass by for a piss or more beer.

Or the drunk idiots that come back to their seats with :37 seconds left in the period.

Really cool seeing the broadcast angle when I was watching the OilKings highlights. Nice to see the teams benches on the "correct side" of the ice. I also like how bright it is, Rexall always seemed dark and gloomy. We will see how the Oilers colors will look on the ice tomorrow night.

I don't know I kind of like the uniqueness of the Oilers being opposite to the rest of the NHL but that's fine.

I have an update on my 2nd level (or top level) drink rail obstructed view. It seems it will be several weeks before the risers come in to correct the issue. In the interim the Oilers will retro actively give $50 per seat per game while the problem exists. The money are actually "rogers bucks" that can be used from Oilers merch or food in Rogers place.

So.. yay?

I almost needed one. Anthems and people leaning forward wreck the view.

There were periods in the game where I saw everything beautifully and boy what a sight line. My riser will be 8" up and my table 2" forward so I'm fairly certain the problem will be fixed. I love my seats, it's comfortable and roomy, and I will be very happy there once the sight line is fixed.

Watched the fist game on TV last night vs the Jets.
And, it was odd to see the players bench on the other side of the rink, on home ice.
The building looked good from TV.
still waiting to take a first hand look...

Relax. The money saved by ripping everyone off is going towards adding 4 more Stanley Cup rings to the management group.
