Quote: | A complete all-around defenceman that makes the game look easy. Natural size and strength compliment his smooth stride. Very mobile skater who moves up and down the ice quickly, with acute recognition of puck and body position. His maturity and poise is actualized in his high-percentage decision-making, with and without the puck, as well as his proactive stick and body play. Very stable defensively and always takes his lane, but is quick to rush the puck up the ice as he recognizes and accounts for how much time his team is spending in their own end. All-in-all, a quick-thinking defenceman that, honestly lacking nothing, has the potential to develop into a reliable two-way defenceman. - Curtis Joe - Elite Prospects

Quote: | Markus Niemelainen is mainly a defensive defender, but there are hints that a better offensive game may be lurking under the surface. He does have a hard slap shot, though he does not use it enough, and he needs to work on getting it on net and through traffic. He also has a heavy wrist shot, but could use some work on his release. As mentioned above he does make a good breakout pass and starts the transition that way. As the season went along and he became more confident, Niemelainen showed better puck skills, including poise when handling the puck at the blue line. - Last Word on Sports

When you get all set to watch the game, and within 10 minutes the Oilers are losing:

Besides being a left handed shot he fills in many ticky boxes. By the time he's ready to play in the NHL hopefully we are t still harping RH shots on the blueline.

I really like this pick. Big smooth skating puck mover who was a top 4 guy for Finland at world juniors. Give him 3-4 years to develope that frame & his skill set & I think we have a 5-6 future dman here.

I'm loving the Euro picks. Gives the big club the option to develop overseas or in the AHL next year. More options.

Ya I definately agree with your statement. Even though Klefbom was a higher selection he had time to simmer & smooth out the parts of his game that needed development.

....looks like he's going back into the entry draft...doesn't seem to be on the development fast track...
https://www.tsn.ca/report-oilers-prospect-likely-to-re-enter -draft-1.1091877
..."Niemelainen, who was drafted 63rd overall in 2016, was ranked by TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie as the 38th best player in his draft year.
"Steady, positional type defensive defenceman. Makes plays with puck, but doesn’t get outside his capabilities. Closes ice and doesn't give much room inside dots and is weighty, but not punishing," TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button wrote in April, 2016." ....
.....too bad....used to be Finns and the Oilers would grow together.....doesn't seem like the hockey gods are letting this happen nowadays...

It's a shame too...He's 6'6 at 19...you'd love to see one of the big men work out for the Oilers every so often. Ever since Beukeboum & Smith patrolled the blueline, I loved the idea of a giant who can actually play being on the blueline. Even in beer league guys like that are annoying to play against with ridiculous wingspans.

Saw a few tweets mentioning his name today, looks like we still have his rights for a little bit longer.

We've received many asking us why Markus Niemelainen is not on our list.
- He was drafted out of the OHL in 2016 giving EDM a 2 yr window
- After yr 1 he was given a bona fide offer
- He then left the OHL in yr 2 for Europe which extended EDM's window to sign him to June 1, 2020

Oilers have 2016 third-rounder Markus Niemelainen's rights until 2020 because while he was a Euro drafted out of OHL he went back to Finland last season. He won't be in the 2018 draft as an unsigned player. His game has to get much better to get signed however

So hard to tell without more information on the player. My guess is that no one here has seen him play at all, and European stats are hard to project to NHL ones. For comparison, Klefbom's SEL numbers didn't look impressive at all - 7 points in 67 games over three years.
He may be a bust, he may be a guy who's here and contributing to the NHL team two years from now. I just don't have enough data to really know.

He has been playing on the third line and riding the pine in close games.

I thought he was a defenceman ... interesting that he's now playing a 3rd-line role.

Everything I see suggests that he's still a defenceman. He played in 50 of 60 regular season games for them, and it's not that surprising if he's down the lineup given that he's a kid...he's only just 20 now.
I believe his team is up 3-1 in their playoff series (although the article I saw was in Finnish, so I could be wrong) and Niemelainen has played in all the post-season games.
I'm not going to write this one off just yet.
