Wow, very happy for long-standing Oilers fans...

If the monkeys who run the organization can somehow parlay the drafting of Mcdavid into a winning club, guaranteed the Oilers will be the most hated team in hockey. It's bittersweet, I wanted the Oilers to find success by building the right way, not by getting lucky...however this feeling is tempered by having to watch non-stop suck for 9 seasons. We will take McDavid, even it it means a few grossly incompetent people in the Oilers' front office get to keep their jobs.

I caught the coverage on TSN after, Jeff O' Neill (Toronto guy) looked and sounded like someone punched him in the seeds, what a whiner.

Two D who are better than what the Oilers have, please, and a starting goaltender that inspires some confidence.

I drove to the mall last night after the draw and shelled out $240 on a custom McDavid Oilers jersey.

2-3 weeks it will arrive, can't wait.

I am beyond excited and especially after having such a terrible day (losing our University Hockey League Championship amongst other things), I knew I had to drink my sorrows away, and then while out on the town, glued to my twitter, this happened!

The only thing I hate and I think is comical, is how everyone is ragging on the Oilers for winning the lotto. I don't think they realize that it's a lottery, and we didn't even have the highest percentage of winning. It's a game of luck, and we were lucky on that day, but people should have the process the NHL has, rather than the Oilers. It just makes me chuckle reading people bash the Oilers, like they had something to do with rigging it or they don't deserve it.

I got news for them, I'd take playoff hockey, a couple cups, and not being eliminated by October over winning a draft lottery. Granted, this one is a special player, but I don't think outsiders know how difficult it sometimes can be cheering for a team which hasn't made the playoffs in 7 years (haha MacT you idiot), and no cups since 1990.

This is our ONLY excitement the entire year, let us enjoy it Toronto!

And we were the inly team in the bottom 4 that was trying to win games the last half of the year. This is the one year if you look at this season in isolation that people shouldn't be whining about us winning the lottery. Of course not in isolation we are getting 4 of the last 6 #1 picks, so I totally get the anger in that regard icon_biggrin

Oh my god, is this real life?

I just woke up but it feels as if I'm still in dreamland. A generational talent stating that it would be a "tremendous honor" to play for the Oilers. I don't think you can put that into words. I witnessed the draft lottery at a bar on Bourbon St. packed with Oilers supporters who absolutely lost their minds at the second that the Golden sign was clarified as the winner. To my right, a grown man was literally brought to tears (of joy) as he screamed "HOLY F--- , MCDAVID!!!!!!!!!!!!".

This is the best thing to happen to this club since '79 and the entire world is aware of it. We now have the option of giving up a top forward prospect and packaging that with a late first rounder for a quality defenseman. What a great day to be an Oilers fan!

....so, like many, I've tried my hand at ordering a custom #97 McDavid Oilers jersey. On NHL.com they don't recognize the lower case 'c' in his name having it show up as 'MCDAVID' rather than 'McDAVID'. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there another site that I am able to order officially licensed jerseys from?

He actually does a really good job of pointing out the various ways that the Oilers management (read Lowe as the constant) have managed to mismanage the recent past. He comes up short of calling for a house cleaning in the front office but I don't think that most other teams want to keep the current group in place so they will always be guaranteed to have someone to fleece in trades.

My two cents

Wow. Per that article Magnum linked we had one of the lowest chances prior to the last ball being drawn:

Quote:

It was reported by Chris Johnston of Sportsnet that going into the final ball, the Leafs actually had a 4-in-11 chance, Buffalo 3 in 11, and Edmonton 2-of-11. (Carolina and Columbus had single chances.) Very Leafs, really.

We have a lot of luck, but unfortunately it only extends to draft lotteries.

When it comes to management, development, drafting its like we are skating up a mountain with boulders tumbling at us.

Hence the pause for concern. A generational player is great but he needs the proper support. Look at Pittsburgh. Winning again isn't easy. Even with a good team supporting a few great players.

Do you see Lowe, Howson and McTavish achieving the right mix?

They haven't exactly lit up anything yet so though I'm happy, I'm very, very tempered in my expectations until the guillotine falls on upper management and a real winner is brought in.

Perhaps having McDavid as a base will allow Katz to attract "real" management.

So this is what hope feels like?

All this moaning from people over how we won the draft and how McDavid is going to be wasted upon us, will I suspect drive him and also the others on our team to show these people how wrong they were. I'm not saying that some of the stuff being said isn't true as it is, but it's sheer bitterness that's leading them to say these things and it just needs pinning to the wall of the dressing room to inspire the team.

nvm, he probably thought that the envelope would have had us in it as the 4th pick, but they already explained that they are opening in the same order as finishing and the logo would have gold background if that team won. Fail leafs fan. haha, mazankowski explained the same, along with the leafs fan failure.

I think he had the understanding that had the Edmonton logo come up when the Leafs logo was supposed to, that would imply the Leafs had won the lottery and then it would have been Arizona's logo, followed by Buffalo, and finishing with Toronto at #1. Pretty ridiculous when they pointout before, and during the lottery that the winner would have a gold card symbolizing they had won the lottery.

Yeah, but it's a start at least.

And added bonus? Should the Oilers ever actually be good again, as we go deep in to the playoffs, we will not have those annoying hanger-on fans who jump on our bandwagon. They'll instead be railing against how the NHL even lets us compete given that we had to sell our souls to accumulate the talent.

I love that we won't be "Canada's Team" the next time around and that rather there will be fans of other teams praying that we lose. It makes me smile to think of their outrage if we were to win...

I have to admit, I have started thinking about winning again...I still believe the purge needs to happen before we can likely make that jump, but maybe there's a tiny bit of light at the end of the tunnel now?

I think the light at the end of the tunnel used to be the Great Purge (patent pending). Now? I don't see it. Those guys are here for 3 more seasons at the very least. I suppose the rebuild can start for real then.

That depends...If Katz is paying any attention at all, he should have an idea that the second McDavid is out of his rookie deal, he is going to get a massive contract for the next 7/8 years. He needs to be very comfortable here by that time, since if he isn't he asks for the max salary, and someone out there would be happy to offer-sheet him at that number. You need him bought in to the fact we're close and that by taking a mere $10MM per year, he's allowing the team to be competitive, giving him a better chance at winning.

Now, the rub there is that he has to believe the Oilers will do the right things with that money to put him in a position to win - not just overpay every journeyman, every draft pick, and every free agent who bats their eyes at the franchise. Bobby Orr is his agent, as he is for Hall, so at some point if he really believes his clients aren't getting what they need, maybe he makes a house call to Katz Manor and has a heart-to-heart?

The clock is ticking on the Oilers now...they have to abandon their plan of just letting this year slide by and hoping that somehow things will just work out. They just had a monster stroke of luck and if they manage to still stumble and bumble around this year, it has become an even bigger failure.

On top of that, MacT and Lowe seem to know that they've screwed things up badly. Why else talk so frankly about missing the playoffs a year in advance? They should be feeling the heat now, because I don't think mediocrity is going to be as accepted...especially with every scribe in the league thrilled to point out any failures for the team moving forward.

My preference still is to have them axed now, because I think they're more likely than ever to make a foolish trade now. No GM in the league will be interested in helping them and MacT's shown over and over that he has no skill for negotiation. This is where we get fleeced, and you just hope that when it happens, it isn't too damaging for the team, but it's enough to hang that group over. I really wouldn't be surprised to see Eberle or Yakupov for Phaneuf, and I'm curious what the rest of that package will look like.

As it is, I can almost guarantee that the next few months see us walk away from Derek Roy (despite the fact he'd be even more useful now), and hire a coach not named Todd Nelson. I think we're that much more likely to wade in to the free agent market for a defenceman again, even though it's a pretty shallow pool this summer and we're more likely to come out with another Nikitin story than a top pairing guy.

Personally, I still suspect that if MacT & Lowe stay in charge this year (and there's little hope that they don't), we'll disappoint again this year, despite the hiring of a coach with a name and despite McDavid winning the Calder. I'm thinking maybe we'll climb out of the bottom five now, but I think that the bar has been set higher than that and a disappointing finish again could doom them. But then maybe I'm too optimistic...a little bit of luck tends to make you think on the bright side for a bit.

Developing some schadenfreude? I know I am. These tears that are flowing like spring rivers are just so delicious! I'm loving it. Not usually an emotion I feel, but I really am enjoying it. And I'm egging people on on FB as well. Good times.

Oh, it's fantastic. At my work, we have regular video conferences with our Calgary office. They were cracking wise at the last one about this past Saturday being the Oilers' big moment on the hockey calendar...I am really looking forward to the next call!

You know the Flames are actually in the playoffs, right? We're so conditioned to think losing is winning in Edmonton I think we're missing the forest for the trees on this one.

I think what makes it a little sweeter is how upset every OTHER team is about this. Yes, it's great news for Edmonton. This kid could end up alongside names like Lemieux, Crosby, etc. if the reports are to be believed. As awful as management is, it's great to have him as Oilers property.

But the fact that Leafs and Flames fans are so salty and bitter? That makes me kind of happy too. Sure I would rather have teams hate us for being good - and hopefully that is coming soon - but it's better than being completely irrelevant or worst of all, pitied by Flames and Leafs fans.

Thats a great article. I wish someone local would write something along those lines that compiled in one location the amazing buffoonery of the clowns running the Oilers. I mean anyone here could do it with a few google searches but somehow the professional journalists in this town cant figure it out.

He is right about everything he says. The members of the OEG really are that arrogant and that stupid. They actually did all those things he talks about in the last couple of years (And a laundry list of things not mentioned...all the way back to 2003 or so.)

Here's a good article about McDavid from former Oil King and Current Senator Lazar:

Quote:

"Some people thought he came across as a little like upset about Edmonton winning, but that's not him at all," said Lazar, who spent his junior career with the Edmonton Oil Kings. "I think (the perceived disappointment) was more because he had a camera in his face more than anything. He has a shy personality. He enjoys the spotlight and everything, but he just wants to be a kid, too.

"He's going to love it there. I know that he's quite happy now. It's a great future for him, a great opportunity. And I'm going to help him as much as I can because I'm quite familiar with the city."

It's unfortunate when a satirical articles ring more truth than not.

The complete lack of trust in the Oilers management to properly develop McDavid or build a good team around him is impressive. Almost every article I've read targets how inept the Oilers management is.

NHL should have thrown the Maple Leafs a McBone

NHL should have thrown the Maple Leafs a McBone
This much is clear: Gary Bettman and Bill Daley are the most honest folks in professional sports. Never doubt them again after Saturday’s draft lottery, which will result in a generational player – Connor McDavid – wasting the early stages of his career in Edmonton.

Of all the cities or franchises that didn’t deserve McDavid, it’s Edmonton. Who knew that just one season of tanking wasn’t enough? Who knew you had to tank four times? Or just hire Kevin Lowe – the General Patton of NHL tanking.

Cannot really argue with any of that

Quote:

McDavid would have been of maximum marketing value and would have had the most immediate positive impact in Toronto. (Sorry, Buffalo.) There is a softening in this marketplace that I’m not certain will withstand a long rebuild without a transformative figure like McDavid.

Folks around the rest of the country won’t like hearing this, but the Maple Leafs have bankrolled the NHL for a long time. They were printing money while other Canadian franchises were on financial life-support, or wringing their hands over weak Canadian currency. It would have been nice to get a McBone thrown in their direction, you know?

Fairness sometimes sucks. Connor McDavid should be a Maple Leaf, and everyone knows it – including McDavid himself.

So the Leafs should get McDavid and they want the Oilers to bring back Arcobello to play against him?

I guess if you're going to dream, might as well go all the way. :)
