4 1st overall picks in 6 years. The one constant in management? Kevin Lowe. It works that way too I suppose.

I want McDavid to come in and hit it off with Yakupov. Move in together. Train together. Drink out of the same milkshake with separate straws.
Just to find out how Hall reacts. I've always wondered how me feels about Yakupov. If it's not positive, hopefully this would knock down any walls. A new Top Dog.

I kind of think that's always how we looks. Just doesn't strike me as an overly outspoken guy.
Geno Reda with an all time brutal interview though. "How do you feel knowing where you'll spend the next 10-12 years of your life?" Baiting the poor kid.

He'll come around.
I got the impression he didn't really want to be there. And why would he? This isn't the draft, he can't really talk about anything more than hypotheticals. Not to mention he is actually in the middle of his own playoff run. It was a spectacle for us fans, but for McDavid, Strome, and Hannifin, they were probably not the most comfortable being there.

My take, he's kinna like Nuge, isn't one for the spotlight and attention. Quiet, soft spoken, nervous with all of Canada staring at him for the first time. I don't see him pulling a Lindros.
Atleast that's my "oh hey wait I should pay attention now" for the last few hours.
FWIW, Cherry basically had that as a character analysis of McDavid... http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/coachs-corner-oilers-bett er-make-playoffs-now/

This changes everything.
Assuming no improbable events happen (injury, pulling a Lindros), the timeline to win I think is now. McDavid is young, and will be on a cheap entry level deal. We have to take advantage of that in a cap league. We have young forwards that will be in their prime to surround him. I don't know how, but every option must be explored to solidify this team in its major deficiencies very soon. The clock will soon be ticking on that entry level deal. The "core" will be in their prime and McDavid will come cheap. I'm not sure what should happen, but more than ever next year can't be a development year. It's gotta be playoffs. I don't have faith in management to do that, but with today's events I think I'm invested no matter what.

Yes, they have to make the playoffs next season. If not, there have to be changes to take advantage of the entry level deal for McDavid (as you mention).
The pressure just got amped up on management to not blow this now.
First step, trade the Pittsburgh pick for a goalie or defenseman.

First off...WOW.
I tried very hard not to be excited about this today, even as they started opening the Oilers card...But that was AWESOME. Fantastic to have this guy coming here to play for our team.
I LOVE seeing the two teams that tanked more obviously than anyone in recent memory come up short, and I laugh at Tim Murray's belly-aching about how unfair it is...screw you Tim Murray. Between complaining last summer about the odds changing to trading away anyone who might have helped you win all year, to crying after you lose (which had to be great to hear if you're Eichel), you are an embarrassment to the league.
Now, here's the tough part. The Oilers still have the wrong people in place and I don't know if you can win in spite of your management, even if you have a bunch of great players. Ideally, Katz realizes that the opportunity he has just been handed is one that just is too good to squander and he gets on Skype with MacTavish tonight and has Kevin Lowe write an essay about why he should stay tomorrow. We should have the best we can get, and honestly, if any solid manager is available, they are likely going to be excited to come work with this group now. I don't think it will happen, but GAWD! I wish it would...it would make me feel a whole lot better that we won't drop the ball this time.
Assuming they stay in place? They may get some extra traction here with the hunt for a new coach and even free agents might look at the team a little differently. Todd Nelson is officially done, at least as head coach, because someone experienced is going to want to come here now. Derek Roy is likely done as well, although if I'm in charge, I'm still trying to get him signed to a cheap deal. Worst case scenario? Some centre plays on the wing and we waive someone at the bottom of the roster like Gazdic. Again, I doubt it happens and I expect that his agent is having a hard time getting his calls answered by the Oilers office from here on out.
All that said, still a great day. So fun to read everyone's hate towards the Oilers...I love it. I am sick of being pitied. I hope that there is a day soon when they're all crying in their beers and trying to apply asterisks to an Edmonton Oilers Cup win.

Shame he won't be around to get McDavid to shoot the puck from far away for extremely low quality opportunities to get his Corsi's up.

Also to add:
This makes for some real interesting dynamics between the Erie Otters owner and Daryl Katz. Katz I believe has a legal battle against that owner.
This is such a weird time to be an Oiler fan.
We have a management nobody believes in, an owner that I don't want give money too, and they are going to handle the fate of a generational player we are happy to have. Such odd times.

Can you believe how ticked off the talking heads on Sportsnet were? PJ Stock looked like he wanted to call a recount, his head was ready to explode he wanted Toronto to land McDavid. This is it man, McDavid changes everything for the team and city. His presence now makes this team one that could be the seeds for a dynasty. Him and Nuge can rival Malkin and Crosby, Gretzky and Messier, Lemieux and Francis. Nuge is going to be a guy that can produce from the 2C spot for years to come and he takes away the tough minutes from McDavid. So many options and scenarios now.... Wow great time to be an Oiler fan.
McDavid just might surpass Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr and heck even Elvis!

Unbelievable.
Its pretty cool, I mean Id be lying if I said that the half dead, buried up to his neck in dirt Oiler fan in me isnt excited...
But god Damn is this management group doesnt find a way to land on their feet. Screw everything up beyond recognition. Make every conceivable idiotic move you could think of, and then...in comes the next great NHL player (presumably) to make it all better just in time for the new arena.
Lets be honest, no one deserves it less than these clowns.
I love that Edmonton gets him just for the drama and the reaction around the league, but I also hate that Edmonton gets him because, if it wasnt already the case, nothing is going to change management wise now for at least the next 15-20 years.
And if they do every become good the monkeys running this team will never shut up about how great they are. It was all part of the plan you see.

You know who else is really, really happy today? The Oilers ticket sales team. They're work just got a whole lot easier.

The great side benefit now is in attracting UFA's, who wouldn't want to play with a future Crosby, in a brand spanking new state of the art building?
IMHO job No.1 is getting someone to ride shot gun on McD's wing, anyone look at him sideways, break his face, kid needs to be able to play hard with out worrying about getting crippled, guy should have some speed and skill, but ready drop 'em at the first sniff of a douchbag.
I remember way too many knee, and head shots on Ebs, Hall, (even Gagner) when they first came up, kid can't be allowed to learn how to play scared, needs to progress at a high level, in one piece, and with confidence.

This is one of the reasons why I want to move some forward depth (Hall/Ebs) for a vet centre that McDavid can flank for a season. Get someone like Thorton who has had a rough patch with management, who is a solid vet who can teach McDavid the finer points of the NHL game, and who has a history of standing up for teammates.
