The Metro line is planned to extend all the way to the airport, if HSR isn't there first. Both the city of edmonton and EIA have plans for LRT/HSR in their long range plans.
The Airport isn't 50 miles out of town... and it won't be long until development of the city is encroaching next to the airport.

There's only one major city in Canada that has a train to its airport - Vancouver - and that's only of 2010. Toronto is just building something now.

Just drove by the site last night. They are not messing around.

They are already a storey deep dug out and had 7 machines in there setting footings.

and this was at 830 at night.

The one thing I also noticed is how good that 2 or 3 block section is going to look with the rink and the new museum....

What's that weird, warm, feeling in my belly?

Why, it's optimism for the upcoming hockey season!

I wish I got a clearer view of the cross section of the building. Anyone have a detailed view?

^ Find a copy of this weekends journal and look in the insights section. They had a two page blowup of this same diagram (I'm sure the Sun did too... but I don't read that junk usually)

Yeah I saw that, but it doesn't give very much detail. I've always enjoyed looking at the innards of what a building is supposed to look like. Anyways, thanks, and carry on.

That is an obscene amount of site trailers.

I like the new view. It's also nice seeing the structure come out of the ground.

I drive past this site every day (some more frustrating than others) and it's neat to see the progress.

It's amazing to think that they plan to have the exterior completed by next summer.

Well the arena district is set of a big announcement tomorrow from Stantec.

Certain rumours I've heard of is anything from tallest in Edmonton to tallest west of Toronto (slightly taller than the Bow in Calgary). Could be a mixed use tower, ie hotel/office combo, or more.

Heard we can also find out about the hotel/casino aspect and what will happen with the baccarat.

Also, just a reminder of what we are getting into:

The continued growth of our downtown will certainly put the urbanization of Edmonton on the fast track. I personally love seeing these big buildings pop up here in our city and we as citizens benefit from these large companies wanting to build big projects in our little city.

Edmonton is about to grow... by leaps and bounds. I hope that the pace can be managed.

I'm very glad these announcements have closed the mouths of the anti arena people, because without this arena, none of this would be happening.

Damn, wish it could have been taller than The Bow. They should have just added a few floors.

According to what I'm reading the internet, the height doesn't include the still-to-be-designed spire. So there's still hope.

well, we can still hope Enbridge will want to out-do Stantec when they announce taking "manulife 2" in the near future to beat the Bow towers, but that soon won't even be the tallest in Calgary.

edit to add other info I just found out... apparently the top of the tower including a spire could push this over the height of the Bow and Brookfield towers (the to be new tallest in Calgary) in Calgary

The arena deal isn't great, but with all the development and the fact that the feared CRL will certainly bring in the funds to pay for the arena as Iveson said, "in a timely fashion. The city of Edmonton now stands to gain from that money for other capital city projects after the arena is paid for.

It's a very good thing.

The arena was the catalyst for this construction explosion.

When I would come to Edmonton (from Calgary) to watch a game i would show up at the arena 30 minutes before puck drop, watch the hockey game then go directly back to my friend’s house. Partaking in before game entertainment (dinner/drinks) or the nightlife after the game never even crossed my mind because there weren't a whole lot of options given the location of the arena. Now with the new arena I’ll definitely be making a full day out of the games. Living in both Edmonton and Calgary it seemed obvious what Edmonton was lacking, an entertainment focal point. Calgary has 17th and 8th ave and the Saddledome all within a stones throw of each other, now Edmonton will have that too. I'm excited for the city and can't wait until everything is up and running. I'm just hoping the post-game entertainment will be to celebrate a win and not mourn another loss.

Having looked at the photos that have been posted so far, it looks to me like they're not putting underground parking into the facility at Rogers Place. Did I miss something? If not, then I think they are making a mistake.

The cement that is being poured right now that looks like it is ice level is actually the underground parking level. The ice surface will be at the level where there is a big void in the shape of the ice on what looks like the first level right now.

If you watch this Video they explain it.

Ahhhh, makes sense now. The pillars that were erected are forming the foundation for the actual arena while supporting the underground parkade structure.

also worth noting in terms of parking, there will be 2000+ parking spots underneath the square/stantec tower
