 | | Thought we could have a thread to talk about the actual construction of the new home of our Edmonton Oilers! Scheduled to open September 2016 - we will have a new sheet of ice for the 2016 season. Only 2.5 years away
Someone has setup a webcam http://www.denis.lemire.name/yegarena/ , but I imagine something better will be put up by the city/katz soon.

 | | Quite a milestone from oh so long of a saga to get here.
Now I guess the next step for Katz is to find a competitive NHL hockey team to play in the arena. If nothing else, at least I believe his Oil Kings will play there.

 | | yes, I hope we soon have a product to showcase on this new ice surface, preferably before the new ice surface is ready.

I was hoping someone would put up a webcam, let's hope there is a more stable one put up that gives maybe hourly snapshots of the arena.. one can hope..

 Thanks for finding that feepa!

Is that the LRT station already built back there? Who knew that was done? Wow.

Usually the first 6 months of these big projects it just seems like they are digging holes and moving dirt around and nothing is happening, but once they start building it goes quickly.

The LRT station has been there for quite a while, almost a year I think. The underground parkade that goes under the rink goes in first, they are..uhh.. just scratching the surface.

 | | Very nice, they are moving the dirt around nicely so far.
Maybe this is a dumb question, and I'm sure a less lazy person could research it, but the Nait LRT line goes from Nait to the arena, and that's it, nothing past the arena yet? It looks like the line starts here at the arena as I see no connection beyond the arena.

Am I blind or is this correct?

 | | It goes into the downtown LRT tunnel before Churchill station, and will go all the way down to century park from what I understand.

It would make way more sense if it went all the way down to Century Park, but the Metro Line (NAIT) will terminate at Health Sciences.

That was the original idea, but I've heard ETS is back and forth on the idea.

To me, it should be Clareview <-> Health Sciences and NAIT <-> Century Park... but I guess we have to keep in mind that one day NAIT line will go out to St Albert

Two decades too late for me, but LRT line from St Albert to downtown would have made my life way easier going to UofA from Castledowns.

 | | It probably should've been completed 20 years ago too. Something happened to this city from 1992-2003/5 where we kinda just did nothing at all but sit and hold on tight as the ship listed and nearly sunk. Now we are starting to see things built again...

Lol. "Something" happened. In fairness, Jan Reimer was put in a tough spot between a cashed economy and Ralph Klein.

 | | It's hard to tell from these photos, but these pits are 6-10 feet deep now. I drove down 104 avenue last night and was surprised at how did it actually was - I've only seen it so far via the images I post on this thread. The photos do not provide much of a guide on the depth.

Boy, that Epcor building sure has a lot of good points from which a sniper could solve all of our problems with two well-placed shots from a Barrett M82.

 | | Boy, that Nait LRT line is a stroke of genius, I have renewed faith in Edmonton civic planners. That one short LRT line includes the Art Gallery, EPCOR Tower/CN Tower, Arena, Grant Macewan, Royal Alex, Kingsway Mall, and Nait.

Brilliant. Well planned. And they have allowed for space for it to one day reach all the way to St. Albert. Almost like a real city.

Now if we could just reach the airport by train. But no, someone decided to put the Airport 50 miles out of town. Oh well, can't win all of the battles.

I thought that there were still plans to have the Metro line extend south all the way to the airport. That likely won't happen for a while yet, though. I like the idea of having a line going from Downtown to W.E.M.- it's about time.

 | | The Metro line is planned to extend all the way to the airport, if HSR isn't there first. Both the city of edmonton and EIA have plans for LRT/HSR in their long range plans. The Airport isn't 50 miles out of town... and it won't be long until development of the city is encroaching next to the airport.

There's only one major city in Canada that has a train to its airport - Vancouver - and that's only of 2010. Toronto is just building something now.
