Side note.. how is it a rookie in Broberg seems more settled, has better positioning, and makes better decisions, than most of the veteran D-men on the Oilers?

A bright light.

for reference.. compare all the slashes McDavid gets every shift vs. Florida.. not one slash call.. even on his break away.. but they pulled this weak slash by Bouchard out of the 100 committed.. look at the replay..

I have lost count how many slashes I have seen on McDavid and others. Not called. Panthers get away with murder out there. I know it’s not the full reason we’re losing. We are 0-7 on the PP. Oilers just flat out need to be better. But the refs aren’t helping

Maybe if you're an NHL ref you keep an eye out for this sort of thing? Nah

Good Catch.. That was the same cheap head shot Bennet did to take out Marchand.. intentional punch to the head.. a RIGHT HOOK.. no review by NHL.. Marchand was out for a few games with a concussion..

I remember at the time during the Oiler game broadcast that the commentators didn't replay this (more than once).. or talk about it.. at all.. usually the TV video guys will slow down these types of hits for closer analysis during stoppages.. not this time..

NHL just keeping a lid on criticizing the refs .. nothin' to see here folks.. literally

.. same thing happened to the Foegle "kneeing".. no head-on re-play view was shown to see if Foegle actually stuck out his knee.. and if so by how much.. it was game ejection decision.. should have deserved closer look.. the re-play shown was just from the side.. which confirmed nothing.. it was a weak ejection call.. 2 minutes tops.

If the NHL wants to investigate a REAL head shot.. they should have looked at this.. in detail.. same hit as on Marchand.. you can see him cock his arm back.. a RIGHT HOOK to the head.. Bennet clearly a repeat offender.. same type of head shot.. intentional.. why haven't the people in media talked about this ? .. kinda Weird

https://s12.gifyu.com/images/SYZYp.gif

Here is the cheap shot on Marchand for comparison.. same thing.. quick punch to the head.. Bennet got nothing for this.. not even a fine..

https://s10.gifyu.com/images/SYZrj.gif

And then this cross check on Marner head ($5K).. .. that puke sure gets away with a lot.. hmm.. maybe having NHL Executive VP Colin Campbell's kid as your Assistant GM does help!

Also.. Marchand.. Marner.. McDavid.. Bennet sure has a thing for the letter "M" .. McLeod better keep his head (or stick) up! icon_nod

Refs will never be perfect nor do I want them to be calling every single ticky tack penalty. However, I would love it (won't happen) if the NHL would make it so refs had to at times explain calls or lack there of. I'd love to hear the explanation of that.

The ref is in position to see everything. If you want the little clip, you can see McD is skating straight ahead. Tkachuk who's chasing him the entire way, moves his stick and arms to the other side of McD. You then see his arms move in a yanking back motion and McD's entire lower body moves because his stride was interrupted. So there is clearly a hook and or hold that disrupted a player on a breakaway. Then he flicks his stick between his legs to yank and slash up - probably getting him in the can - right before he was going to shoot and he didn't get a shot off.

So I would love to know what the ref saw and explain to fans why that wasn't a penalty in his eyes. Not to embarrass him or give him crap but to explain to the fans watching, what constitutes interference, hook, hold, or a slash because he does all of them and the ref is standing there with an unobstructed view watching it.

I am not trying to become a Vancouver fan but I deem myself as a somewhat educated fan in that I feel like I have a decent grasp on the rules of hockey. Not an expert but a pretty good idea. So for education purposes, I would love to know why that wasn't a penalty because if the job of the ref is to call rules that stops scoring chances, Tkachuk never had any kind of body position to defend, he was in chase mode the entire time so the only way he could defend was to break the rules with his stick.

OR if the refs are too thin skinned to stand up in front of a mic and explain, then get the NHL's director of officials to go out there and explain things. You don't have to dissect every play, pick 5 of the worst and ask why it was called or not called.

Having argued with a lot of refs over a lot of years on a lot of bad calls, I'm not sure that putting refs in front of a microphone gives anyone any comfort. Really, the only reason fans want that is because then they'll get to hear mea culpas from refs who blew calls against their team.

However, in practice what would really happen is that refs would be defensive in 99% of cases and give rationale to explain why they were right on virtually every call. That would drive people completely insane. Would anyone here feel any better if the referee came out and said that while he thought Tkachuk was close to the line, he never crossed the line? And even more so, if they pressed him and he then said that he viewed that Bouchard on the other play did cross that line?

Look at the referees on twitter. They agree with virtually every call, no matter how ridiculous. Even the league gets in to it, re-inventing what off-side is to help cover refs who didn't call back that Makar goal or giving convoluted explanations on what is and isn't goaltender interference.

I do think the refs had a really bad game last time out and the Oilers got the worst of it. I don't think there was a conspiracy against us, or that they were doing it on purpose. They just sucked and missed several calls. We're never going to remember the game where it goes the other way, because it's not going to bother us nearly as much.

The Oilers need to be better, they need to convert on their man advantages, and they need to turn this series around, no matter what calls they get or have missed. The great news is that we've been pretty close through two games despite playing like crap in Game 2 and losing the special teams battle for maybe the first time all playoffs. We get a break or two, we turn it up a notch? And the Oilers can win this thing in 6.

Then put the refs bosses up there to explain what happened. I believe there is a review process with refs after the game. It's not supposed to be a witch hunt but I, along with I am sure a ton of people that follow this game find it extremely frustrating game after game not having a clue what will be called.

All refs supposedly don't want to impact the outcomes of games but they are. Bennett knees Bouch, thankfully he's fine but he got 2 mins. Foegele knees the Panther, he gets 5 and a game. So not only did the Panthers get a 5 min PP that impacts how the Oilers play for 1/4 of a period, they lost a forward and are a man down for more than 3/4 of a game. That one call had a big impact on the games outcome. But when you watch the 2 incidents, what's the difference? Both players are going for a hit, both guys have their guys suddenly change direction at the last min to avoid being hit, both guys try to adjust, knee on knee contact happens. It wasn't a case of an MMA flying knee but they both kneed the guy. If I am going to give a 5 min kneeing and a game to a guy which means you tried to hurt the player, I would give it to Bennett based on his history and how he plays. Bennett punched Marchand right in the jaw on a dirty play that knocked out Marchand for a game. He's been catapulting himself at Oilers trying to drill them in the head. Foegele is not a dirty player, if anything he's soft.

The McD breakaway. There were butter soft slashes to hands called but according to the rules, they call slashes to the hands because it can stop a scoring chance. McD had a breakaway. Tkachuk for sure slashed him in the hands a few times, he definitely hooked him as McD body literally jerked back some and he even went so far as to stick his stick between McD's legs to hook and slash him. It wasn't a battle in the corner where you have 2 guys hacking at the puck, it was a freaking break away. So if you are worried the refs can't take it, then have their bosses up there explaining what's up.

When team exec's make bad signings or trades or their team loses out early, they all have to sit up there and get crapped on by the media and asked about all their screw ups.

Coaches get called to the carpet and asked about their mistakes.

Players get raked over the coals if they make any mistake.

All those people have big impacts on game outcomes, yet refs who can impact the games a ton, go about their business with basically immunity. They never get talked too by media and asked why. They might do their own internal review but how a ref is reviewed is never revealed. I don't know every single ref there is but it sure seems like once you are in, you are in until you want to be done. You don't hear about refs being fired. They don't get suspended or punished after brutal games. If a coach says too much, he gets fined. If these guys tank games, oh well. On to the next one.

Refs do get held accountable for their performance. You might not get the public pound of flesh you want when a linesman misses a puck over glass call or the refs pretend 17 slashes on a breakaway aren't slashes, but their games are reviewed and graded. The underperforming officials do not last long.

The really discouraging part is we can all see the obvious problems with officiating. I don't mind the missed calls, the puck over glass from game 2 for example, those happens. What I hate is the volume of hacking and interference the NHL has decided to allow / endorse. Why wouldn't the NHL want a highlight reel McDAvid breakaway finals goal to show in all their advertising for 2 decades to come? I can't answer that question, but they've shown they simply don't want it.

It's the SCF... if refs were underperforming they would have been weeded out well by now. If they are officiating games still, then the league very much approves of what the guys making the calls (and lack there of) are doing.

Exactly. For some reason this is what the NHL wants finals hockey to be. I don't understand it, but they're the experts.

The Jordan flying through the air with his tongue hanging out is one of the first things people picture when the think about the NBA, and they keep him relevant. The NHL has the Bobby Orr moment, but have not done much to make it a marketing brand.

Connor McDavid scoring on a breakaway with his mouth guard half hanging out in a Stanley Cup Final game is a moment? That would be poetry. The NHL does not know marketing and they will not under this current regime. They are happy being a 4B team in the big 4, just behind the MLS despite having one of the most entertaining sports in the world.

Waiting for Box Lacrosse to one day catch and pass them as well.
