👍👍

No issue for AAV and term for a tweener 2/3 pairing guy who played well last year and is 28.

We can go 10% over the cap during the summer, so plenty of time to get rid of salary to sign a few more players :P

Thought it "was" (not now) around 19-20 mil left to spend after Mike Smith's potential LTIR and Keith's retirement?

If it was 19-20 mil, remaining 6-7 mil has to be used to resign Yamo/McLeod/JP....

Add in Smith and Klefbom is another $6.3M

Does this include LTIR money from Klefbom and Smith? Looking at capgeek and it says we have 2.25 mil left but not sure about LTIR? I read we had 22 mil with LTIR. Can anyone clarify for me?

Not a bad raise for him. The Oilers are running out of money.

They have about 8.6 million after LTIR is used, I believe.

McLeod, Yamamoto, and Puljujarvi are the RFAs left. Enough to sign all of those guys but not much left for defense improvements or extra depth.

Yeah - we're done, other than shopping the bargain bins now in a couple weeks time.

Teams shouldn't blow their brains out entirely on Day One of free agency anyhow. There's always some guys who are left blowing in the wind who you can pick up at a great price later.

We're probably not getting Strome or Marchment though.

I don't think they need more at the forward positions. Defense still makes me nervous.

Nurse
Barrie
Ceci
Kulak
Bouchard
Broberg?

That's... a concern.

Assuming no changes (big if with the Brown rumors)

Hyman - McDavid - Kane
Nuge - Draisaitl - Yamamoto
Foegele - McLeod - Puljujarvi
Holloway - Ryan - xxxx
Shore, Malone…

Nurse - Ceci
Kulak - Bouchard
Broberg - Barrie
Niemalenien or something…

Definitely need to get some forward depth. Defense looks like it needs help without big steps from Broberg/Bouchard.

But I suppose some of that could be fixed at deadline.

Good. Hopefully at the $2.5M that was leaked previous...

He's decent, good wheels, good defensively.. the hope is Broberg will eventually take the No.2 LHD .. so you want Kulak at a price you can live with playing #3 LHD..

... Just saw the 2.75M price.. not bad with the insanity out there today.

This is the perfect example of why I don't listen to, or put any value in Edmonton sports media;

If Keith is off the books, Barrie stays and perhaps Kulak gets signed.
Hearing Kulak’s ask is 4 x $2.5M (minimum.)
Is he your 2nd pairing LD?
I like him as my 3rd - but not at that term/salary.

Kulak at 4 x $2.75. Reasonable number for a 2nd pairing Dman. Quality person, skates very well, played plenty of playoff games, local guy...
Holland having a day.

July 8th, Kulak is a 3LD not worth 4X2.5
5 days later He is 2LD that is "reasonable" at .25M higher.

What an idiot.

My thoughts on the signing are the same as I said earlier. It is too much for a guy who is a good 3D but below average 2D. In year 3 and 4 this deal will be a pain.
If Broberg advances Kulak could be the 3LD by the end of year one in this deal
I like Kulak, a lot. My issue is that these contracts dont kill your cap all at once but paying bottom 6 F and bottom 3 D an extra .5 to 1M too much adds up.

All that said, I am glad he is back. The depth in that spot is bad and available FA's were low end. The defense needs to be better than last year (and most years in the last 2 decades) and I think it is with Kulak on the team.

Compared to what Chariot (4 x $4.75M), Gudbranson (4 x $4M), Manson (4 x $4.75M).. have to say Kulak is looking pretty good at 4 x $2.75M

Every deal that gets announced makes me more and more impressed with Holland's day. I'd probably have Manson as slightly better than Kulak but 2 mill better? I don't know about that. I would definitely put Kulak ahead of Gubranson by a bit. I'd have Kulak based on how he played at minimum on par with Chariot and considering how important skating has become, on pure ability, Kulak might have the edge going forward. If a person wants to say Chariot has more experience than Kulak as a #4 that's fair but he's 4 yrs older and way slower. So I wouldn't have him 2 mill better than Kulak.

Second in the league in scoring last year and extremely high +/- for less than $10 per season? I think that’s pretty solid.

It depends if he can do it twice in a row. Gaudreau might hard regress with CBJ. I do think it might be a very good signing for them.

Agree if he's 2nd in scoring for the next 7 years.. or even the past 7 years.. I just think he's not going to be able to match what he did last year.. they took a chance.. I definitely wouldn't classify it as an A+, don't think he factored in risk.

It’s not a one-time deal though for him. He had a 99 point season and several more at or around a point per game pace. He is 8th in scoring over the last five years (405 points in 370 games) with just McDavid, Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Kane, Marchand, Panarin and Huberdeau outscoring him over that time. He turns 29 next month so she will be a concern in the latter years of the contract but that’s the case for most high profile free agents. Ultimately Columbus got him for considerably less than Calgary was willing to pay and for one less year so that is pretty good on them. Given his production I would expect he’s a top-10 salary in the league, especially given most of those above him on that scoring list are making more on deals signed years ago.

I am not a fan, mostly because of where he’s played and the stupid Johnny Hockey moniker but it’s still a good contract for Columbus. They weren’t going to acquire anyone of that caliber for less, and most didn’t think they could even do this.

Based on last year. I think he goes back to the mean.
