Nervous about the term and dollars, but the Oilers absolutely needed a goaltender.

Please no soup. We should be better than that.

Term is a year too long.. his value is not $5M as a goalie based on his record.. but you're shopping in the UFA market.. slim pickin's .. fingers crossed.. any mention of movement clauses? If he wasn't given any, then at least you're able move him some day..

What happens when Mike Smith gets off LTIR? Goalie controversy!

So as long as he's marginally above average in goal, should be a solid move.

Hope he likes having a young D corps in front of him

Money and term both not good. Hopefully he bounces back from his last few months last season. Don't know if this is an upgrade on 2021 Smith.

I'm not sure the numbers will be better, but I think Campbell (not soup) will be steadier. I never thought the Oilers could win a cup with Smith. He was too erratic, too old, too injury prone, too short term. The Oilers now have someone that could be the backstop while McDavid is in his prime. That's the upgrade and why the overpay *might* be worth.

Of course we could be bumping this thread in 2.5 years after everything has gone to pot. The potential disaster certainly exists.

I'd always like all contracts to be cheaper and less term but I am happy they got a goalie. The demand was extremely high, the supply extremely low. They got one of the top ones. I think a Campbell/Skinner combo is an upgrade on the Smith/Koskinen that got them to the West final AND it's over 1 mill cheaper.

his save % is very similar to Smith from last year, but he did play 20 more games and had a better GAA. thumbs up for stability. I wish the money was lower and had less years, but I sure hope Jack makes me forget about that.

I just want a goalie who doesn't give up the Smith-like weird, flukey, low% goals, and bad giveaways. Just a bit more stability is key. This team can outscore a certain amount of defensive lapses, so cutting down on the goalie blunders is big.

I hope this move helps it.

his point share is almost double Smith's too. So either TO was THAT much better at the turn-around and score part of the game, or he somehow more involved in plays than Smith.

2021 Smith was an anomaly, and he wasn't coming back. He wasn't the answer so we needed an answer from somewhere. Time will tell if Campbell is the guy, but he's a better bet than bringing back the old bandaid and hoping it doesn't fall apart completely.

Goalie market is bonkers, but I’m not very comfortable about 5 year terms for 99% of goalies. It is too volatile of a position and this contract will be difficult to get out should it go sideways.

That said, I am more confident in this tandem.

We will live or die with this team now. This is it. McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, Hyman, Kane, Nurse, Campbell.

This makes me wonder what Kuemper will end up getting. I know he just won the Cup, but what team is going to spend over $5M for him?

I don't hate Campbell at $5M, I dislike the term more. When it comes to a 5 year period for a goalie, if 3/5 seasons are .915 or higher then that is really good and probably the best we can hope for on this deal.

Debate all you will whether or not the Campbell and Kulak deals are too much for too long, but at least both guys have never been credibly accused of beating up women!

We needed a goalie - hopefully Campbell can be the guy for us.

compare to Kuemper 5 years at 5.25
Very VERY similar career stats. Kuemper 0.02 better save % and 0.05 better GAA.
I guess that adds to up $250,000?

Over their careers, Kuemper has played about 160 more games than Campbell, but still not a small sample size. 135 games vs 299

Maybe Holland has a plan to mine the Laffs for players to build a winner in Edmonton. If Soup works out as well as Hyman has so far, this could be one of his best moves since taking over for the Oil.

Apparently my time will be filled hearing a waived goalie consistently giving up 4 goals a game in the AHL.

I know he’s well paid, but I still feel for the guy having his career unravel like this. His soul must be absolutely crushed right now. Dude is definitely headed to a buy out.

That buyout isn't even too bad for the Oilers. They'll get a few million in cap savings right now at the low low cost of 1.5 million for years 4-6... the rebuild years (maybe). I hate to say this because I'm generally opposed to buyouts, but I buy it out.

I'm worried for the guy personally.. guy has a horrific NHL start (large part of which is his defence).. gets waived to the minors.. hopefully to get his game back.. but his confidence and pride has to be totally crushed.. and is getting pumped for 4+ goals a game.. I think he's likely in a dark lonely place right now.. hope he has someone looking out for him down there.. doubt his family is with him..

Haven't seen any Condor games Campbell played in.. but to be fair that Condor defence isn't exactly Norris caliber either.

Hope he's able to get his game together and get some of his pride back..

The stats don't bear out your defence theories here at all. The Oilers are pretty middle of the road for allowing high danger chances. Not great for a team with Stanley Cup aspirations at all, but hardly one of the worst d-corps in the league.

As for the defence in the AHL, the other two goalies have very good stats in 6 starts. I think Campbell's allowed more in three games than than the other two have in six.

Mark Spector @SportsnetSpec
As Stu Skinner starts his 12th of the past 15 Oilers games, Jack Campbell is undergoing a bit of an equipment overhaul.
Working in new, more modern pads — stiffer style than his old Vaughns — and new, much bigger upper body/chest protector.
Not a minor thing, in-season.

So, Campbell came to Edmonton with a glove with a literal hole in it, where the laces could let a puck go through. Also with pads made out of butter that made it hard for him to save shots 5-hole.

So...basically redoing all his equiment during this season. I think this man may be a writeoff for the year. He better have the summer of his life to try to make up for this season.

None of that Tweet makes me feel confident. It’s like a small bathroom renovation. Sounds like a great idea until you expose the plumbing and realize there is a lot more hidden work you need to do before you can plumb in your new shower.

Now you just use a different bathroom and leave the huge mess for someone else to fix.

Is it possible everything to do with Campbell is going according to plan?

Campbell 22/23 - 0.882 sav%, 3.57 GAA, 18-9-4 record - GM Ken Holland

Osgood 08/09 - 0.887 sav%, 3.09 GAA, 26-9-8 record - GM Ken Holland - 2009 Stanley Cup Champion

Osgood lost in the finals in 2009. The year before when the Red Wings won the Cup he was .914 with a league leading 2.09 GAA going 27-9-4 splitting time with Hasek (winning the Jennings that year). In the playoffs he went .930 with a 1.55 GAA. In 2009 in losing in the playoffs he was .926 and 2.01, which would be amazing if Campbell suddenly did that for a couple months.

I'd like to follow this up by mentioning that Chris Osgood in my mind was a severely underrated goalie. He are Marc-Andre Fleury are about the same to me, and yet Fleury is considered one of the greats now by many people.

I'd like to follow this up by mentioning that Chris Osgood in my mind was a severely underrated goalie. He are Marc-Andre Fleury are about the same to me, and yet Fleury is considered one of the greats now by many people.

Crap. Oh well, I'll take the finals still :)

Osgood seemed to have a very up and down career. Probably above average, but I always think of him like players like MacT, Lowe and the gang. Played in fortunate circumstances. Like the Ken Holand of goalies :)

I think Fleury did a lot more individually in his career, far more consistent, with a bad run of confidence tanking in playoffs.

I think that Fleury's 1st and 4th season with the Golden Knights is really what puts him over the edge as being the better of the two, but overall I think they are closer than most will acknowledge.

And Fleury has also had the benefit of playing on great teams most of his career. Great goalies usually are supported by great teams. To me that is why Dominik Hasek is the greatest ever, since he put up amazing numbers despite playing on much weaker teams than his counterparts in Roy, Brodeur, and Belfour.

Yeah, I consider Hasek the best as well. The consistency through his career, even taking Buffalo to the finals. Also winning a cup right away when he finally got the opportunity on a good team.

It is kind of unfair to guys when they only got to shine on stacked teams. Hard to judge them individually. Looking back, Osgood's stats in his last 2 playoffs were pretty amazing. 0.930 and 0.926 in 19 and 23 game runs.

Osgood was a steady and mostly reliable goalie whose main fault was not being Dominik Hasek or Ed Belfour. I do think the loss (and gaffe) against San Jose in 94 lingered for a long long time. He also had a super fun name that could be turned into Osbad or Osnotsogood really easily.

Would love to have an Osbad right now. That's all we really need. A goalie that can just do what you hope a goalie will do and not just have his confidence crater. Although the wings didn't have the kind of defensive lapses we keep having. Still, a vet with a career history of being steady that isn't 41 years old would be nice right now along with Skinner.

It has to be purely the mental side of the game for Campbell. At 31, he's not old enough that his body should be breaking down so much or his skills have eroded due to age.

He's never been consistent or good at saving high quality chances in his NHL career so he may not need to have his game fall off much to become a mess at the NHL level.

I didn't realize how long his mental health issues were going on. There are multiple articles from his time in Toronto about him struggling mentally, with lots of direct quotes from him. Did Holland and the gang do any research on this player? How could anyone think a mentally fragile goalie could ever be the answer on our team?

As seen in some of the above posts… the goalie market was zilch available, combined with a GM desperate to win with two of the best players on the planet.
