This sounds official now:

The Kulikov deal to Edmonton is getting done, pending a trade call. NJ gets a conditional 4th.

Miller previously said that a passport issue was what was holding this up.

Anyone see what the condition is for the pick? I haven't found anything yet. Not that it's a big deal, just curious.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Just to note, because of the shortened season, if we win 3 playoff games and lose, that still gets pro-rated as a won round to give up the 3rd.

Pretty low cost for a guy who will play probably top 4 mins for you.

Cup Crazy!!!!!!

I kid. Hopefully he solidifies the LD a bit. Jones/Lagesson were constantly getting walked and with Bear on the RD it created for a lot havoc.

It'd be nice for to grab a top 6 LW'er. We have been good fans all year. We deserve this.

Without his wife hopefully.

Seriously, Ottawa soured me on him. Let's go after Rakell instead.

Was he married? I thought it was just his girlfriend...

Either way, there may be baggage there, but he'd be here for a good time not a long time.

Rakell would have once been a guy I really was stoked to have here...I'm a little worried about what he is now. He's definitely declining and he has another year left on his deal.

All these imperfect options do seem to point to the fact the team should probably have done more to get the one piece that was available.

Is Rakell even available? He's a really good player on an extremely cheap deal with another year left. What would the cost even be assuming the Ducks would even consider trading him?

Sounds like they're shopping Rakell and Josh Manson, but want a 1st round pick+ in a deal for either.

Hehe, funny seeing them shop Manson. They threw Shea Theodore away bending over backwards to keep Manson in the vegas draft.

Reportedly the ask is a 1st rounder. Same for Manson. Edit: Oops, replied to wrong comment.

They might get a 1st for Rakell. Manson I don't see it. I thought for some reason he was younger but he will be 30 in Oct so what you see is what you get with him.

It is funny the way the Ducks have gone there. They didn't want to lose Vatanen, Fowler, Manson or Lindholm. Kept Montour too. Pretty uneven performance from all of them since and Shea Theodore looks like a stud.

I do think that the Ducks are just accepting they're going to be awful for the next couple of years and have decided they're okay with that. I think it's one of the reasons these players are available and also one of the reasons that Dallas Eakins is still employed.

So if the Oilers offer their first for either Hoffman/Rakell, no draft picks until the 6th round....for now.

I'd be reluctant to give a future division rival in the Ducks one more 1st round pick however.

Could be 2023 first for that matter. I don't know if there's a lot left worth the first...it'll just make us look foolish if we give up more than Boston gave up for Hall now for some lesser player (unless James Neal goes the other way).

Just saw that Kulikov was the #12 player on the TSN trade bait board. Only 1 guy higher was traded, Highmore.

So we DID make a splash. Double splash if we get player #14, Glendening.

Underwhelming weekend to be an Oiler fan, having the dollar in, dollar out mantra shoved down our throats while other cap strapped teams make splashes.

Going to be one heck of an offseason though......................

Listening to Dustin Nielsen and the gang driving this morning on 1260. He is confident that McDrai will be even better next year. Seems like it's all on those guys to finally reach the goodness level needed for Holland to bet on them. I don't think this lineup will be changing that much this summer, so makes sense I guess. Good luck McDrai on taking that next step. Take that 1st and 2nd in scoring and up it to 0th and 1st.

Listened on my drive in to the first day of my new role. All pumped. Listening to Oilers radio on the drive in. Was a good time... till I remembered he and Rishaug are besties and both of the idea that our 2nd time making the playoffs in the McDavid era isn’t the time to go for it because just you wait till next year!!

You have THE best player in the game of hockey and arguably the best European player in the game, on your roster, for several years.

All media have been saying it for him. Is that enough? Probably needs to give some reason to try to appease fans. Guess he could blame Chia :)

I think that the Oilers do like to go out of their way to try to keep fan expectations low. They're more concerned about it reflecting poorly on their performance as management if we flame out than they are about actually pushing the team to do anything.

Remember the story last year that the expectation levels were just too high going in to the playoffs? Or Chiarelli saying he didn't think they were ready in 2017 after he mostly sat on his hands in that trade deadline? Oilers management, led by Lowe, fears any kind of expectation of performance, because they haven't ever been held to account for their own poor performance.

I’m picturing Holland hanging up the phone at 3pm MST, wiping his brow, and then looking up. There are all the other execs applauding him and they unveil a banner:

2021 Ken Holland “Kept his powder dry.”

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

"Well, we asked other GMs what they thought we should do. Many of them were quite complimentary of the job we've done so far, and most thought we really should stand pat. It's just not our turn to win yet this year, but they tell me it's coming, it really is. Soon too I think.

It was funny how many of them asked me for Connor and Leon though."

Holland so far:

- not in on Hall
- never looked at getting creative to manage the cap
- never looked at impact forwards
- believed his biggest need was on defence, and addressed it with Kulikov
- says Koekkoek may be back in May (adding an extra LHD)
- wanted someone with size and experience who can add depth
- asked about having multiple holes in his roster, actually says the right thing and points out how well they've played lately.
- complains again about the cap restricting them - although again, he said earlier they didn't look at creativity
- blames trying and failing last year with trades as one of the reasons they couldn't do more this year

It's draft and develop your way to victory with Kenny. Better hope our overripening prospects all pan out in the next couple years.

More here from him where he's wrecking his earlier answer:

- "you can't go all-in every year"
- Again talks about last year being a problem.
- Says maybe next year they'll be a buyer and try to make "bigger noise"
- Asked by Terry Jones about Klefbom - says the right thing - he doesn't know if he'll be able to play next year. Will talk to Klefbom in July. Says it's "too early to tell"
- Got the players to meet the rules for exposure to Seattle Kraken
- Says they have about $2MM left in cap space. Needed cap space for bringing back Slater Koekkoek when he's healthy. Unbelievable.
- Matheson keeps asking him about holes in his lineup. Holland failing to tell him to stuff it.

I really don't like that talk about not going all-in, and about them hoping next year they can make more noise. To me it sure sounded like he's signaling that they don't think this is the year - which is insanity.

The fact he said he didn't consider doing anything creative with regards to the cap? Just bonkers. Katz should fire this dinosaur and all his dinosaur friends.

hehe, this talk about how important 4K is. Guy was below replacement level before being hurt. Can just bury him. Don't have to be panicking about needing cap room for him.

Or tell him he's not healthy until the playoffs. If Toronto can do that with their starting netminder, and Tampa can do it with their best player, then I think we can wait a couple weeks before activating Slater Koekkoek.

My god. This team sometimes.

Too late. He said that 4K was ahead of schedule. I'm sure they considered holding him out since he's not even that useful, but since someone in management just blurted out how he's on the cusp of ready, no can do.
