But I’m sure it does. Not a good reward for an outstanding 1st period. He should be allowed to chase records. He’s earned it. He’s the main reason it’s a blow out.

Agreed. I think Sather and the 80s Oilers' had this right. Push it if you can. Go get records.
Really, it just makes you look like you're scared of the other team if you're too concerned to play your top guys because they might get a hit.
