Atta fella Skinner. 1-0 for your career. Not sure if you’ll ever see another start, but thank you!

I'd be pretty comfortable if we never see him again. Good on him for getting his W though, and good on the team for giving him massive run support.

Hopefully we can duplicate that offence on Tuesday.

Well, playing the backup for a game didn't make the sky fall, like certain posters were practically guaranteeing earlier today.

I had high hopes, but still glad I went against my instincts and avoided the under. Skinner definitely didn’t win us the game. I think with Koskinen in net, it would’ve been a 6-3 win.

So having Koskinen in would have made us score 2 less goals tonight?

This would be consistent with last season. We scored more to make up for Mike Smith's stinky 0.902 sav% and helped him have a winning record. We don't like scoring for Kostko as much.

Basically. The effort to get the comfort zone to a 5 goal lead was obvious. It’s terrible to say, but I think the team pulls the plug after 6 if they trust their tender. Maybe 4 goals if it was someone better than Koski.

Might be a bad take, but visually this team has different effort levels depending on the circumstances.

Skinner played well enough to win an 8-5 game... TIPPETT's plan could have gone the other way very easily. TIP was lucky. icon_nod

Are you still grouching that other people aren't fawning over all the team's decisions?

He let in 5 goals and likely ends his NHL career with well under .900 save percentage, despite playing against the worst team in the league. Fortunately, the team was able to outscore their problems.

That's not a real outlier to some of the lesser Koski, Smith and other performances we've seen through the years.

Even if the check is a little faded, we can easily refresh the check next week when Smith is back.

Yep - every goalie can have a bad night. The problem for a prospect is when it's the norm.

Skinner has two years with games in the ECHL and the WHL. He's played 44 ECHL games and 47 AHL games and he's below .900 in both leagues in that time. I didn't see anything last night that gave me any confidence that he's somehow going to be much better at the NHL level - at least, not any time soon.

We were playing the worst team in the league, so if you're going to play a substandard goalie, that's the time to do it, but it's worth noting that Ottawa scored over 20% of their output for the first 9 games of their season last night on Skinner. It's easy to get caught up on the feel-good aspect of a guy's first NHL game and first win, or to let him off the hook for the goals against because some of them were pretty good shots (although two of the shots he should have been able to see and stop and the first goal came as a result of a bad rebound he spilled up the middle on a long unscreened shot). However, let's not kid ourselves. From that appearance and from the significant amount of history we have of Skinner as a pro, he's not an NHL goalie at this point in time and has a lot of work to do to even get close.

Gonna have to bring the A game Tuesday. Sens will fire the puck from anywhere, something a not great team should always do.

Would be nice for JP to finally get the monkey off his back. Kid should use Archibald’ as stick for practice to get a feel for a shorter twig.

Marking that down. Useful bit of information right there.

I think I may avoid the O/U for my own sanity. Easier to bet on the goal scorers as we are fairly predictable in that regard.

Was Skinner perfect? Far from it, but for his first game in the NHL, his first game in 11 months and behind a defense that's been fairly porous, once he settled down he was started to find his feet. With a few more games played and more rust shook off he'll certainly do as a back up for us.

This was certainly a better game to get up in the middle of the night to watch. Would have been good to see JP score, but with the amount of PP's we were getting that limited his time and was the quietest I've seen him since he returned.

Leon Draisaitl (6) and Connor McDavid (4) combined for 10 assists in the @EdmontonOilers win tonight. That’s the most assists by two teammates in an #NHL game since Oct. 9, 1993, when Tomas Sandstrom (6) and Wayne Gretzky (4) had 10 assists for the Kings vs. Detroit. #Oilers

Drai = German Gretzky
McDavid = Canadian Sandstrom

Lol. You know, I’ll read a @FakeOilersGM tweet and often think Kr55 has a suspiciously similar sense of humor.

The following is all to be qualified by the realization that Ottawa is not the strongest team..

Haaaaaas made a difference on the 4th line, can actually forecheck with speed and seems to know what to do in his own end, gets it out when needed, can also PK if required.

McD & LD beyond belief, a joy to watch. Thank you Lord!

Yamo-motor still clicking on all 12 cylinders. Not bad on PK duty with RNH.

Barrie actually showed glimpses of the Avalanche version.. a glimmer of hope ? Nurse and Barrie were surprisingly OK together.

Nurse played well overall.

Neal showing his value, all he needs is one shot and its snipe-ville.

Puljujarvi still plugging along, loads of chances.. once they do he'll make it a habit.

Turris still a weak link, how can a guy that played this long in the NHL as a center, consistently lose his man in front of his own net? Weak play in general. Super soft, might start calling him Charmin, or worse Kyle Belanger.

Archibald has had a couple of good games in a row, starting to show signs of last years play forechecking and on PK.

Jones keeps making bad reads, doesn't want to block shots, not very fast, I thought one of his strengths was his superior mobility/speed, I swear Lagesson can out skate him. Bouchard can't be any worse than Jones defensively, or skating, if Bouchard is ready I'd put him in place of Jones.

Lagesson did OK, no huge mistakes, steady play.

Larsson so slow on the reads and the pivots, he's getting down to 3rd pair duty.

McDAVID! Oh YEAH Baby!!

I thought Haas was quite good actually especially considering he's been out a long time but seemed to do OK. Looked good on the PK. I could see him going to the 3rd line as Turris continues to struggle.

Barrie has been looking a lot better the last few games and looks like the guy I was expecting. I think the PP is finally coming around with him on it. Looked dangerous all night, nice to see him get his first goal.

Neal scoring was huge. I could see him going on a heater.

JP is still doing OK but he needs to score soon. People were complaining about Kassian not producing enough well JP is doing the same thing. 2 assists in 11 games. Scoring chances are going down.

Nice to see pucks going in for Kahun. he had a ton of chances. Glad they stuck with him on Leon's line. They have 2 legit scoring lines now.

Larsson was on for 3 goals last night, 2 on the PK. Not sure what he was doing on the Tkachuk goal. Tkachuk brings the puck in and he's not even at the top of the faceoff circle when Larsson is laying on the ice. Let's him walk in to the hash marks and rips it. The second, at least he was in front of the net. 3rd goal, he could see Stutzel coming from center and I don't know what he was thinking but he gets caught totally flat footed and gets walked on. I do wonder if part of the PK struggles would be fixed without him on it . He just keeps making mistakes that end up in the net.

Jones. With Larsson struggling, I do wonder if his struggles are part of that. He's learning the position, finding his place and the last thing you need is your partner, the vet and guy who's supposed to know better and show you how to do it, making bad read and stupid mistakes.

I thought Skinner was shaky for the first period but I am sure he was nervous as hell. He hadn't played a game since last March. Glove seemed a bit slow in the first but settled down and for the most part was solid enough.

I thought this was interesting:

Team shot maps

EDM's offense is incredibly potent and they're not outscoring their expectation either. They're earning the goals they've scored with high-quality shots. If they ever get some saves, they'll be very scary.

https://chartinghockey.ca/team-shot-maps/

This team does feel a little bit like the 2006 team with a top of the roster that is extremely good, but flaws throughout the roster below that. This team arguably has a little more flaws than the 2006 one - goaltending, defence, depth forwards as opposed to goaltending & depth defence with some tweaks only needed at depth up front, but still, the elite skill at the top gives you hope.

Lowe had his finest (only fine?) season as GM in 2006. He addressed the defence issues in January adding Tarnstrom and Spacek while giving up only Rita and Cross off the roster. Goaltending had to wait until the deadline with the acquisition of Roloson, and then the team supplemented the forwards by adding Sergei Samsonov and Rem Murray.

Can Holland help the team out this year and patch at least some of these holes?

The other entertaining thing on twitter this morning is some analysis on McDavid/Nugent-Hopkins/Puljujarvi - they are seeing exceptionally low PDO right now. Their shooting percentage is really low compared to normal, and other teams' shooting percentage with them on the ice has been really high.

What does that mean? Basically that McDavid's been unlucky not to have had his line score more...and he still is leading the league in points.

Puljujarvi not showing elite touch, but McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins are going to get their goals at some point.

One other thought on last night - I like that version of Tyson Barrie that shoots the puck better than the one we've seen most nights where he just defers constantly and gives back to McDavid and Nuge. He ripped a few dangerous ones last night, including that goal.

Chiasson now on waivers. I wouldn't expect him to be picked up.

If Ottawa wasn’t tanking they could pick him up for a free goal tomorrow.

I'm assuming its so they can put him on the taxi squad if they want and maybe bring up Bouchard? I thought Chiasson was actually pretty good last night.

Did he cut you off somewhere? Hit on your girl? I don't love Chiasson but I don't see him as this drag on the team like you do. He's given the Oilers 33 goals and 62 pts the last 2 years.

Just think. The Oilers could have had Matt Murray and his 6.25 mill salary and there was fans who pushed for it. YIKES

There are fans who push to trade Draisaitl and/or McDavid. Are those kind of fans worth bringing up?
