Stauffer had Wisconsin coach T. Ganato on his show today, give it a listen, talked about Holloway at length, raved about him, discussed going pro, Granato sounds like a good coach, knows what he has to do, why the better players come to play NCAA, to play pro.. interesting to see if Holloway comes over end of season..

Tony Granato was an absolute trainwreck of an NHL coach. He's the guy that blew it when the Avs got Kariya/Selanne for dirt cheap. They made the mistake of saying at the press conference when they were signed that they were looking forward to playing together. Granato said soon afterwards that players don't get to decide their linemates and he NEVER played them together - instead banishing Selanne to the fourth line and saying he had to "earn his icetime" as Selanne failed to light it up playing 10 minutes a night with goons and checkers.

Looks like he learned his lesson, in NCAA he knows he's selling finished pro products (for recruiting) as well as trying to win games..

Fantastic work by Holloway

"The 2020 first-round draft pick has been selected as the Hockey Commissioners Association National Player of the Month after he scored 17 points in eight games with the Wisconsin Badgers.

Due in large part to his six goals and 11 assists in February, Holloway now leads the entire NCAA in points per game among players with more than eight appearances at 1.83.

The 14th-overall selection has 11 goals and 22 assists in 18 total games this season."

Yeah, while big blistering mistakes don't look good, if the coach/GM etc. has found success later in their career recovery, I don't think a past mistake years ago should eliminate them in your search.

As the interviewer, their homework should be to find out in detail every major mistake that the candidate made before the interview. Bring these up in the interviews, go through them in detail, see if the candidate learned anything. See if they can talk about examples later in their career where they could have made the same mistake again but knew better.

And in other scenarios, sometimes you can make the right bet or decision and you still fail. If you are interviewing a former Oilers scout who was pro-Yakupov, I as the interviewer think that is a good bet that just didn't work out. Deciphering which errors were decision-based and which were due to the randomness of hockey or other factors out of their control should also be part of the interviewer's homework.

Some people learn. Some people don't.

It would be fascinating to put him on the spot about that years later. I wonder how many people would try to justify what they did there, as opposed to admit they messed up.

He could sign with the Oilers whenever he wants. Only issue is that signing with us ends his NCAA career. He may not want to do that unless it’s certain he’s going to be playing in the NHL.

I mean a quick look at the org’s LW depth and safe to say there’s a pretty clear path to him being an NHLer.

I don't think you can really promise a teenager he's going to be an NHLer on this team right now. College hockey isn't the NHL and you can't assume he's going to just jump in and excel here.

I don't see a good reason to rush him over yet. He's still 19 for another 6 months still. Leave him for another year in the NCAA and then we'll see.

I wasn’t saying bring him in now. I’m just saying there’s a clear path for the kid.

Burning an year of his ELC for a few regular season games and possibly 4-13 playoffs games isn’t worth it either.

I would be signing Holloway if he's willing and at least get him in Bakersfield playing pro games after College is done.

He finished with 1.7 pts per game. Eichel in his 1 and only college year had 1.75 pts per game. I am not saying Holloway is or will be as good as Eichel but when you are putting up points like that, I don't see what another year of college hockey gets him development wise. If his skating was a problem, I could see it keeping him in college to work on it. If he was undersized, I could see it but he's 6'1, over 200 lbs.

Yeah, I think kenny should at least try and talk him into playing the year out in Bakersfield. With our lack of offensive wingers he should at least have a reasonable shot at making the big club for next year. I wonder if they gelive him minutes with drai or connor, or if he would start lower in the lineup

He could center a 3rd line, or winger top 6, he's a shooter, playmaker, with speed and size.

Well Holloway lives for another game! Whew!! weights
Wisconsin wins 4-3 in OT, Caulfield comes through, scores last 2 goals, winner in OT.
Holloway owes him a beer. Would have been a crappy way to end a NCAA career.

Caufield and Holloway get blanked. Bummer game to end a good season. But, huge disappointment is a great Oilers-like experience for Holloway! He's ready ;)

Wisconsin might have lost the Big-10 championship, but they will still likely get selected to the frozen 4 final 16 teams as the Big-10 regular season champ, and #4 national ranking... not over yet..

Wonder if something was wrong with Holloway, stats say he didn't take any faceoffs, and he was invisible on the scorecard..

They’ll forsure still have a shot to play for the frozen 4, it isn’t time for them to let it go 😏

So it's a big upset that they're out of the Frozen 4 in the first game, is it not?

https://www.ncaa.com/game/5799582

13 shots for Caufield in this one, and three points but not enough.

Huge upset.

Holloway likely Bakersfield bound now, I would hope.

Crap way to end your NCAA career, it was an upset but when it comes down to a single game elimination anything can happen. Apparently Bimidji had one of the oldest teams in the tournament, Wisconsin one of the youngest, probably a factor, plus the goalie sounded to be a bit weak, gave away a puck on a PP, allowed Bimidji an EN SH goal.. can't help..

NOTE... This is just my hypothesis but.. In the last 3 Wisconsin games Holloway didn't take any faceoffs, which is his strength, he was the best on their team, he only took TWO face offs vs Bimidji.. ZERO face offs in their last championship game vs Minnesota .. I think he was injured the last 3 games, likely upper body.. wrist, shoulder? He may sign with Bakersfield, but I think he'll be on the IR for a while..

Holloway played 2 seasons in NCAA, time to go pro, Bakersfield next destination, he can learn the pro game there faster than another year at Wisconsin IMHO, especially with the way the team is going now with Woodcroft. If he excels there, expect him up with the Oil at #3 C, or McD's L wing sooner than later..

I read on twitter that he’s been battling an injury. Fingers crossed for quick and full recovery.

I get his faceoff dominance this year, but I’m thinking he’s the top 6 LW while we see McLeod as 3C.

Yeah he cam back from that one.. then dominated NCAA when he returned tp play, this one is recent, might be a re-injury though can't remember if the WJHC was an LBI or UBI.. this one was definitely upper, whatever stops you from taking ..

No wonder he didnt take faceoffs. I was a soccer goalie and dislocated my thumb during tryouts. Those overlap with hockey playoffs and I played through it but the pain is AWEFUL. contently present and effects every single play

Yeah double bummer tonight .. lose to Leafs in brutal fashion and then can't look forward to Holloway playing rest of this year, even in Bakersfield. Apparently he's going in for imaging Monday, but I suspect he already knows what he's got. Broken thumbs take a long time, likely ligaments involved as well as a cracked bone.

He wasn’t playing with the Oilers this year, he’d be shipped to Bakersfield. This saves burning a year of his ELC, so all in all, give him the rest, get him a good doc and rehab plan and see ya at camp bub!

Retrospect maybe best thing, he'll be stronger, faster, and had another summer of working on his skills before camp, then he has the entire training camp and exhibition games for the coaching staff to compare him to what they have in hand now.. which I suspect some who they will replace, and he'll start out as a 3C or top 2 LW.
