The Oilers got him!!
Per TSN Radio and a guy named Gord from TSN!
Apparently it's for Gagner! Cap management!
Two second round picks.
From the Oilers:
The #Oilers have acquired forwards Andreas Athanasiou & Ryan Kuffner from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Sam Gagner & two second-round draft picks (2020 & 2021). In addition, Edmonton will retain 10% of Gagner's salary.

2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

Commie called it!
AA is still RFA after this year, 1 RFA year left.

He just got tanked, so he'll come in from a weak bargaining position. Guessing he'll take what he made last year. Fantastic deal.

Micah Blake McCurdy @IneffectiveMath
Andreas Athanasiou (to Edmonton) is a strong driver of offence both at 5v5 and 5v4, with a good-to-very-good shot and an extremely good penalty differential. His defensive weaknesses are much smaller than commonly supposed.
Surprising honestly. He just plays on a team with management intentionally tanking and no goaltending. Hopefully he clicks with Mcdavid.

Two 2nd round picks for AA from Oilers.
Reasonable, considering it's not just a rental.

I'm excited to see him in the lineup. Now I need to practice saying his name.

I like this. AA (I'm not learning how to spell that) is under team control for two playoff runs while the second rounders wouldn't help for 3 or 4 years, best case scenario.

Craig Button doesn't like this deal. Thinks AA plays with blinders and will just be lost playing with McDavid. Too individualistic in how he plays.
Colour me surprised! Button doesn't like something about the oilers!

hahaha.
Sorry, have to add more Button-ness. He put up his prospect list for the Oilers and Bouchard is now a B level prospect on his rankings, exactly the same as Samorukov. Broberg is A-.

Wish Button would just Button it up when it comes to the Oilers. He's so blatant about it. This deal shows some real promise! Hope it leaves Button blubbering. I do feel bad for Sam, not being able to continue the ride with the Oilers this season.

And as a winger with 9 points in the AHL this year, there's an excellent chance he's just a body thrown in the deal and won't ever be qualified by the Oilers this year.
No issue with the rest of this deal. I like Gagner, but last night it was pretty clear he isn't a great fit with McDavid. I don't mind him as a depth forward, but he's a big cap hit for that...someone had to go to make room.
Generally happy with the team taking some risks today to make the team better. I don't think we can win the Cup with this goaltending, but the squad is still better than it was yesterday.

Was disappointed to see Sam go. Felt like he was really playing well lately. Definitely not a fit with McDavid, but seemed like he was getting some swagger back. Oh well.

That was one of his first nights with McDavid, could have been fine with a bit more time together. Obviously was never going to be on the same level, but is Chiasson can do it, I think Gagner could too.

First pro season out of college where he had fantastic numbers. I'd definitely want to keep him around to see if he can translate his college success to the A. CF says his cap hit is $925K, so a normal entry level price, I think I'd qualify him and see what he'd sign for, I think there's a player here. Maybe.

We've got a lot of contracts, and teams usually have a preference for the guys they know best so if you're a scrub and you're pushing in to your mid-20s and there is anyone else they'd like to see with a shot? Then you're out to pasture.
He'll get a bit of a chance to impress the team down the stretch for the Condors, but I'll be surprised if he's on the 50-man roster next year.

Archibald, Haas, Sheahan, Ennis, P Russell, Green, Smith, Manning, Granlund, Jurco, Malone, Currie, & Lowe all expiring. That's 13 contracts, I think there's room for him. He hasn't even had a full year to adapt to pro yet. Yes, some of those 13 are roster players that need to be signed or replaced, but there's a number of AHL guys who don't need to be brought back either. I'd rather give him a contract than give another to Currie or Malone, you know what you have with those guys, this guy could turn into something.
But I also realize he might not, just offering a different point of view.

I assumed Keegan has two contracts so that if he gets cut or bought out he still shows up the next day.

I am liking this deadline more than any since the cup run. Better on the back end and front end. Hopefully both goalies stay healthy. If they do, and we don't bomb these last few games, this team makes some noise in the playoffs.
5 Cups and counting.

I am stunned! Get a young, speedy, skilled, former 30 goal guy who's having a bad year for in my opinion not much. Seconds if they work out are 4 yrs away. Plus they have control.
There is your winger for McDavid and you can keep your Dra line together. I love the deal.

At the least it looks like he will fill the "playing with mouth piece hanging out" hole that Gagner is leaving.
The one that starts at 15:00. I hope we see that a lot with him and McDavid :)
