Second year eligible player who surprisingly was not selected last year. "The most impressive Czech player in the Five Nations U-18. a year ago. He is an explosive skater who needed time to adjust to the new surroundings of an experienced Waterloo USHL club. Works hard to use his speed to separate, find seams, and forecheck. His shot is coming along and is a dangerous player when on the ice in short-handed situations. Committed to the University of Connecticut."

Interesting pick.

One thing I like (and the Oilers have kind of moved towards in the past handful of years): late draft picks who commit to the NCAA (or stay in Europe). Doing so gives the team a couple extra years to retain their rights without an ELC. These are long-term prospects, so that extra 2 years gives you a better idea of how they have developed & what kind of prospect you actually have.

You *should* be able to make a better informed decision later on in their development and, at least in theory, end up with fewer disappointing prospects on ELCs taking one of the 50 contracts (though even still, Nolan Vesey and Colin Larkin got ELCs... but in THEORY they should be able to better predict the prospect's future potential with a few more years of proof).

Vesey and Larkin weren't Oilers draft picks though...Vesey was a late pick of the Leafs and about to become a free agent, and Larkin wasn't drafted at all.

And I think your point still applies with them - looking at their numbers in college, no one should have ever thought those guys were on trajectories to make them good pick-ups. Chiarelli strikes again!

So.. apparently the Oilers have lost the rights to Blumel, they needed to sign him to a contract by June 1st, he's now signed a contract with HC Dynamo Pardubice, and unrestricted for future NHL. Too bad he was trending well..
https://oilersnation.com/2021/06/23/edmonton-oilers-lose-rig hts-to-matej-blumel-after-june-deadline/

Blumel was signed out of the USHL, so apparently the time span to sign a contract before losing rights is lower than NCAA, Europe, or CHL..

Pretty bush league if Oilers forgot the date ... like put a "reminder" notice on your Outlook calendar.. or worse.. were unaware of this USHL loop hole.

I saw on twitter that Stauffer was defending this, saying the Oilers basically decided not to sign him:

Yeah, I generally like Stauffer, but his story doesn't make sense, Blumel was trending well, much better than some of the other forward prospects, you don't give up a draft pick in exchange for saving one 50 man contract, I think someone pooped the bed here.

This might be the dumbest conversation Oilfans has ever had (and that's saying something). The Oilers didn't sign him so they lost the EXCLUSIVE right to sign him. They can sign him tomorrow if they'd like. This is not a clerical error, this is just a team deciding to cut bait on a draft pick. It happens all the time.
