I am not defending Chia by any means here, but he hasn't been all bad. This is the first time in a long time I'm actually excited about some of the prospects on the farm that weren't taken in the first 2 rounds. He has done a better job than his recent predecessors in cultivating some form of pipeline for the big team, or at least that's how it looks this year. Most of the top scorers down there can still be considered prospects unlike most of the last decade.

Actually this is very true this is the only thing he did very well but his track record of trading has been very poor. We need new blood without influence of the old boy club it is time to show these guys the door and hire a competent GM that will bring his people and fix this mess once for all. There is no magic in fixing this franchise and it will take at least 2 years to get a decent product on ice. This summer the new gm needs to upgrade the defense with at least one new guy and not a no. 4-7 defenseman, also we need one or two RW and get the first 2 line running once for all. Use Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, the first pick and before the draft get what you need.

Probably took until midnight because they had to get the laywers to go over Chia’s NDA. Can’t have him talking about how crappy this org is, how badly it is run, how all the old boys are everywhere in everything while they carry around giant glasses if wine.

Not sure what his replacement will be able to do in the short or even medium term. His bad contracts and trades have stripped away most of the leverage Peter started with. Connor’s potential legacy has already been wasted. It’s too late.
To me this is proof that easy money corrupts. The incentives of this club are horribly distorted by multiple #1 picks including the last one they shouldn’t have had any business getting, and an owner that doesn’t seem to want to be involved In the business. It’s like the embodiment of a trust fund kid. No need to save and scrimp and invest for the future if you’ve never been poor! Well, now you’re very poor, with no life skills, and trying to figure out how to make Kraft Dinner but you poured the cheese in with the boiling noodles because that’s how you thought it worked.

They finally fired him. I suspect that the Koskinen deal wasn't necessarily a Chia decision.

For those who are complaining about Keith Gretzky taking over on an intern basis. Exactly what the hell did you expect would happen? They fired Chia last night, someone has to take over the duties until a replacement is found. I would suspect that they will take these 10 days to search.

The Flyers fired Hextall this year and brought in an outside hire for the interim GM role (Chuck Fletcher).

Given the Oilers braintrust (including Gretzky) has damaged so much, nobody in that group should be making decisions. If other teams can find an outside hire in a short time, so can we. We just choose not to. Nearest warm body, as always.

I want the Oilers to get this next GM right. They haven't done that with the previous guys. So I have no problem letting Gretzky sit in his same office, doing most of the same duties he's been doing, maybe doing a couple more things like call ups that might be considered "GM duties" which aren't going to make a damn bit of difference while they look for the right guy.

Are the Oilers a mess? YES but they have McDavid. So good people will STILL want this job. Does this team need some changes, YES. But there are a bunch of good pieces so you aren't starting from scratch. When looking for a replacement, anyone who's actually really good, is not going to either take the job to be an intern GM or leave their current job just to potentially have a job for a few months.

Not sure if I’d see them still wanting the job. you walk into one of the biggest failures in NHL history with Connor’s wasteage. That’s something that only someone who is desperate or delusional would do. Now, if the whole management changed out, then that’d be less of a poison chalice.

The question is - do you believe that the Oilers want to go through the process of looking for a new GM? Or is this just an attempt to slide their favoured person in to the chair without bringing too much heat. They are concerned about the accusations of nepotism so they don’t outrigjt name him at this point. They’ll do it quietly this spring - saying that they thought he did a great job under tough circumstances and he’s EARNED the chance to continue.

Is there anyone out there who really believes that Nicholson did a “forensic audit” of the team? Everyone knows what the real problems were with the Oilers and those didn’t change. Yes, MacT wasn’t GM any more but he got job security and now gets to sit behind the curtain with Lowe - part of making hockey-related decisions but not burned in effigy nearly so often. I guarantee that there was no report ever generated by Nicholson. I fear this GM search will be more of the same. They’re going to give it real lip service today and then magically find that the best person for the job is surprisingly the guy who was sitting two offices down. It’s the Oilers way.

I think there was an audit, but between the lines you could tell It didn’t really apply to anyone above GM, although they would have given that lip service. The auditors generally don’t find anything wrong with their own conduct.

We all know it. Everyone knows that the only constants have been the OBC. When do they start getting called out? We've seen a hint of it here and there, but nobody in the MSM has ever come out and really shone a light on it. We need that to start happening and MAYBE, just maybe the noise gets loud enough for Katz to hear and finally do something about it.

He's a smart business man - he needs to understand that never being in the playoffs is leaving a ton of money on the table, and nobody in the history of the NHL has ever done a better job of keeping his teams out of the playoffs than Lowe and Co.

Maybe today is the day?

MSM has been pretty open in their disdain for Chiarelli of late, perhaps they go hard at Nicholson for the OBC today? Though, if they do Bobby will 100% say KLowe has nothing to do with Hockey Ops and that MacT’s role in Ops is only advisory.

Even if they do bring in an "outside" hire, how far outside will they really be? Chiarelli was an outside hire, and the Oilers ended up doing the same things they always do: rushing prospects to sell hope, trading skill for grit and "good in the room", throwing players under the bus and not doing anything organizationally to provide cover for guys who were getting beat up in the media, etc, etc.

I'm actually happy that they are making Gretzky the GM at this point. At least it provides some (faint) hope they will go through an actual process. They hired Chiarelli, what, 3 days after he was let go by Boston? But then again, he was their guy and they already knew that, so what's the point of actually doing interviews. The arrogance of this group given their performance is really breathtaking.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Nicholson is a clown.

Tychkowski tried to shine a light on the cancers, Nicholson poo poos it and goes on to say "Kevin Lowe is VERY important to this club"...and it's all the players' fault. The guys who have been here all along are great. It's the players. Unbelievable.

I'm glad, but I really see no way out of this spiral for the time being, especially with the OBC running things. Who is out there that would be willing to take over with that gang looming above? Does anyone want to take over a team with a roster that essentially is stuck?

Like I said, I'm glad, but it's a big meh for me with this stupid org.

Not sure if the post-Chiarelli firing, Nicholson PC is worthy of its own thread when it’s likely to just be a reaffirmation of ‘the plan’ and blah blah deck chairs.

I would pay hundreds of dollars to see Kevin Lowe go on another rant as epic as the Tier 2 fan rant.

Please let this happen. This is the only thing keeping me interested in the team. announce

Can the Oilers bring in Trump for this presser? Or work him in somehow? This presser just feels like it needs some Trump, or I guess I would settle for Vince McMahon, maybe Chris Farley's brother if those two options fail.

Nicholson will say the collab was fake news, that’s as close to Trump as we’ll get. That way he and the OBC save face for after game 82 when they announce some other former Oiler player or Hockey Canada exec as the GM (and no, it won’t be Yzerman) all while MacT, Lowe and Howson keep collecting a pay cheque. Oh, and it will swiftly be followed by our old friend Jay Woodcroft named as Hitch’s replacement.

I’d love to see Lowe and MacT out there with Nicholson, solely for reasoning to confirm what we all believe. Though I won’t be surprised if it’s just Bobby and this presser is as informative and telling as Hitch’s post gamer last night.

I’ll never burn a jersey, or anything like that. I used to buy a new one yearly, didn’t get one this year and I sure as poop won’t be spending money on a new one anytime soon.

Not saying I believe there is a deal out there... but does Lucic want out officially now that his Ol pal Pete is gone?

See ya Pete. I had high hopes when you came in here and you’ve taught me to never have faith in OEG decisions. The awful part about this is you can’t even be happy that this nightmare story is over. It’s more like an awful chapter in the middle of a long, War & Peace type horror novel.

Does K. Gretzky trade the first? Buy out Lucic? We know things will get worse because they always do here in Edmonton, but worse how?!

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Keith Gretzky is going to be named interim GM. Matheson saying he has paid his dues and it is not nepotism:

Keith Gretzky's first NHL job was with the then Phoenix Coyotes in 2001. Know who had ownership in the Coyotes then? Brother Wayne...but that was probably no help in getting him a job.

I mean, ignoring the obvious, it at least APPEARS as though he’s done his time and climbed the perverbial ladder to being a GM.

I think they trade Draisaitl or Nuge in order to get a 5-6D, plus useless CHL player or two.

Looking back, the decision to play Petrovic and send down Jones probably also wasn’t Chias decision. I think his boss said - well let’s at least see if the NEW guy we got is any good. That answer was quickly obtained which was the last piece of info needed.

Could include Spooner playing last night, AFTER CLEARING WAIVERS, to this as well.

Good call. My money says the OBC demanded he play all the new guys and then held a private viewing party to convince each other that the problem is indeed, Chia, and to strengthen OBC solidarity in the face of adversity.

Not to be lost in all of this;

We all complained about the MacT blender, but this Hitch blender has been next level. I get that he feels he needs to find SOMETHING that works with this sorry group of forwards but holy crap. That has to be super frustrating for the players. How do you trust what you’re being told when the second you make a mistake or get scored on your line assignments change. How do you build confidence? How do you build chemistry? Not to mention our PP units, which weren’t any better under Todd.

Who knows maybe the blender is also an artifact of Chia almost being out the door and applying pressure on Hitch as a result. When my boss gets nervous he starts stirring up issues and asking for changes.

Was great for 10 games. Nice to have a fresh voice, especially one that’s so eloquent and intelligent sounding. After the season is over though, I hope they part ways.
