This was the sort of game you'd expect when Spooner is out of the line up.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

they played with some real jam in p1 and p2 - but couldn't buy a break/goal. tough loss as they failed to show in p3.

I knew it was over in warm-up when they said #97 wasn't playing.

I saw some hilarious take on twitter today suggesting that Koskinen, not McDavid, might be the Oilers MVP to this point...

Wideman gets his first point as an Oiler though...despite just 6 minutes of icetime!

Leaving the goalie pulled when gifted a powerplay with two full minutes left?

I mean, the other team can take long bomb shots without icing the puck if you turn it over. Not sure if it was just a bad decision or a lack of confidence in the PP without McDavid.... I mean Spooner.

There's a school of thought that if you're going to go for it with the goalie pulled, you're better to do it early than late - especially if you have a man advantage anyhow.

The one I didn't understand was pulling the goalie again with 30 seconds to go down 4-1...trying REALLY hard for that all-important 4-2 goal...after burning the second half of the previous powerplay with the fourth liners on the ice for 45 seconds.

Old school of thought was try to go 45-60 seconds 5 on 4 with your G ready to pass up any dumped pucks, tiring out the opposition and then pulling the G for the 6 on 4 hoping the opponent hasn't had a line change. How many empty net goals against this year? 7?

And yes to your second point. Yes indeed. Bringin' back memories of Taylor Hall screaming at Renney.

According to this site - https://morehockeystats.com/teams - seven so far this year, on only 8 pulls. Not certain if the one tonight is already included. We've yet to score with the goalie pulled too.

Other teams have pulled their goalie 10 times against us, scoring once...but we've only managed two empty net goals for...I'd hazard a guess that the gutless style that McLellan preached kept the players from making any attacks on the empty net unless it was a sure thing...

Every single time the Oilers have a chance to make a meaningful move up in the standings with a win, they lose! I thought they played really well for a good half of the game but they just can't score! Not sure if Hitchcock or any other good coach for that matter can fix that. Conner can't do it all.

Yep, that's the best team Chia could put together to support the best player on the planet. Try to imagine this team if Connor were to suffer another long-term injury without vomiting in your mouth a lot.

Drai PPG without McDavid: 1.00

And Khaira has more ES goals than Lucic.

We have to lead the NHL in EN goals allowed. If nothing else it’s gotta be goal differential.

This game minus McD just magnifies the pure IDIOCY of trading a line driver like Taylor Hall for a stay at home defenseman. Stupid then, even more stupid now, especially when you consider you had that guy for $6M and term, and where salaries are going today.

That team tonight barely looked NHL caliber, that's a bottom 3 lotto team without McD .. Yikes cry

Maybe sign him as a UFA?

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

No doubt it's gonna be near impossible to score with McDavid out of this lineup, but gotta give Drai a bit of credit. He had a good game.

Corsi stats were 26-9 in Drai's favour when he was out there, shots on goal 10-3. Helped create our one goal, was out for none against. He did his job, and handled playing with a mish-mash of wingers all night pretty well. Hitch took this as a chance to see Drai on his own line and was trying to find some chemistry. Might be time again to put Drai on the 2nd line when McDavid is back, they are getting way too cute playing together again.

Leon can drive a line, but where the hell has Nuge gone? Remember this used to be our #1 center? He does a lot of good things, but driving offence does not seem to be in his tool box anymore. "Paging RNH... We could really use some of that first overall pedigree right now!"

Did you see the winger group from last night? There wasn't a lot of help for #29 and #93...

2 posts for Pulju, while playing a lot of minutes vs Seguin and Benn. That's, at the very, least nice to see.

....McDavid practicing with the Oilers in St. Louis Tuesday afternoon...Talbot expected to start in goal for the Oilers Wednesday night against the Blues...

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/blog-practice-updates-124/c- 302593136

..."Draisaitl-McDavid-Chiasson

Khaira-RNH-Puljujarvi

Lucic-Brodziak-Kassian

Caggiula-Spooner/Russell-Rattie

The defence pairings are as follows:

Klefbom-Larsson

Nurse-Russell

Gravel-Benning

Garrison-Wideman"....

...thought Hitchcock wanted Lucic to go to the front of the net, but he seems to spend a lot of time along the boards fighting to do something productive along the boards....I'll admit I'm biased against the way Lucic contributes to the Oilers on the ice, but if Ryan Smyth is still looking for some work, maybe he can be a short-term consultant and teach Lucic how to get in the opposing goalie's face, even if it means getting slashed and shoved....

....good spot to give Talbot a start in St. Louis...may he have a great game....

I just find it odd that aside from McDavid everyone else on the team tends to take a turn getting ripped by the media/fans at one point or another... Even Leon (who's on pace for 90 pts). But Nuge also seems to be exempt from criticism, why? He's supposed to be a top 6 center, and I think on most teams he would be, but the guys ability to create offence has disappeared unless he's on 97's wing! Taylor Hall wasn't wasn't on his junior team, and he was driving offence. How is it that it's now ok for him to just play a solid defensive game and that's good enough? I think it's time for baby Nuge to man up, and take charge with or without McDavid. I think he's got more offence to give, but has settled into a roll where the pressure and expectations tend to fall on 97 & 29, leaving him somewhat "safe".

hehe, yeah, we have to make up for Hrudey still calling Nuge a 3rd line C. That's our job as good fans.

Well he is on pace for career highs in points so there is that. He is turning into a pretty amazing defensive center too. His reads and positioning are really good. I cant complain about Nuge.

Really liking the Hitchcock experiment so far. The amount of grit and intensity is night and day. Turning this team from a country club into a hockey club.
