Saw this on Instagram.

Not a terrible backend D tryout

2016: We need to get heavier, and we need a defenseman!

2018: We need to get faster, and we need a defenseman!

It doesn't hurt. I don't see a lot out there. The Oilers need as much competition on the back end as they can get.

I would get excited but since its not 2012... he played 8 games last year and was Fayne'd to the minors. Decent AHL points though.

I'd be shocked if Garrison got a contract but if it pushes a few young guys to be better because they have a hungry vet breathing down their necks. I am all for it.

I guess, to be fair, he was part of a glut of defencemen that Vegas thought they'd be able to trade. That said, he lost out to guys like one-time Oiler Brad Hunt, who never looked close to being an NHL regular.

33 years old though, and his last couple years in Tampa weren't great. Another left shot too. I figure the only way he makes the team is if Nurse holds out beyond the start of the season.

If he has a good camp, I could see the Oilers signing him to a two-way deal and sticking him in the minors. I wonder if Ryan Mantha's health status might be the reason for the PTO?

Im ok with this, if we sign him keep it under $1m so it can be buried.

This forum has turned into a pessimistic cesspool of bitching and whining about the same topics consistently.

....good point...in the September 5, 2018 print edition of the Edmonton Journal, Jim Matheson notes that Mantha hasn't been given medical clearance to attend either the rookie camp or main training camp due to the blood clot in his left eye....

Mantha may be done, he had a blood clot in hi seye, but likely caused permanent retina damage. hard to play D without peripheral vision on one side... hope for the best though... he was projecting well when he first arrived, could have been a playing NHL games this year.

Let's all just hope for a miracle together.

Oh good.

The MacT solution of signing 5 crappy d-men and hoping they are amazing, rears its ugly head again.

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

This isn't the management team of the early 2000's. It'll easily be 6 crappy dmen!

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Interesting to see multiple Edmonton media guys suggesting this:

Garrison in lineup again tonight paired with Bear. He has been steady as he tries to secure a contract. I sense it is more likely than not he gets one. #Oilers

I think you can only really sign one of Chiasson or Garrison, given the cap space available.

I don't think Garrison has been bad actually but I don't know if I would sign him. You got Gravel on a 2 way. A few young guys knocking on the door, plus Jerabek. Jerabek hasn't been that good though and Garrison might have beat him out.

Stauffer has talked and tweeted several times about Jerabek potentially having a Europe option given who is agent is. If he doesn't make the team, I wonder if we see a termination of his contract and him going to Europe. Stauffer is the team mouth piece and more times than not when he starts talking about stuff like that a few weeks in advance of it happening.

Garrison hasn't been real impressive, from what I've seen, but he hasn't been unimpressive either, for the most part. I actually have liked him better than Jerabek. With Gravel, Jerabek, Lowe, and Stanton all signed within the organization, I'm not sure I sign him to make room for a middle of the road, NHL/AHL tweener, since there's so many. But if all of Gravel, Jerabek, and Garrison were here on PTOs, I'd pick Garrison of them all. And if Davidson were here, I'd have picked him.

All in all, we're talking about a #7 who may jump in to a #6 with injury, so it's not that vital, and because of that, and because of how close the Oilers are to approaching the 50-contract limit, I probably release him.

Getting tight on the contract limit too. If Bouchard sticks and you sign both, I think you're up to 48.
