Still a sizable gap in contract talks between the Flames and Sam Bennett. Possibility Bennett heads overseas until a deal in Calgary is done

I'd laugh at the flames, but no Bennett in the lineup might actually be addition by subtraction for them. He really has not fix in well on that crappy team. They developed him into a turd that runs around trying to slew foot everyone along with his buddy Tkachuk.

Anyone know the ask vs what the team is offering?

I remember there was a ton of people pushing hard for Bennett over Leon. Thank god that didn't happen.

I know I was one calling for Bennett to join our gutless team made by Lowe and Friends. Definitely not short of players with descended testicles on the Oilers now :)

Obviously Bennett's offensive ability has not at all lived up to his draft hype either. He still would have been a nice addition to our skinny kid shoulder surgery club though.

He definitely would have fit in with the tiny boy club of Nuge, Yak and Eberle. I can't remember who else was on the team that was small at the time but I know there were more. I was pushing for Leon because I always felt that while I liked Bennett's edge, I don't think a team can survive in the NHL having multiple centers that small. I believe that you need at least 1 center over the 200 area to compete with the big boys. At 6'1, 186 Bennett isn't even stocky and I don't think that the teams are always being "accurate" with the sizes of the players, especially the smaller guys. As an example, the Oilers have Nuge listed at 6'0 196. I call BS on that weight. Maybe Nuge is 196 with his gear on but he's a stick. With the way it has gone with Nuge, unless you are elite, I am not even sure anymore you can be an overly effective top 6 center when you are under 200.

I'm sure he'll be in the lineup at Rogers on October 4 trying to do something stupid while his team is getting their butt kicked. Calgary just negotiates hard with their RFAs, unlike Edmonton that just gives them everything they want. Going to Europe would be stupid as the guy is barely an NHLer. If he goes and plays somewhere else, he may never be welcomed back. What did he get last year, 26 regular season points and 2 in the playoffs? Yeah, go ahead and ask for Leon money.

I was one of the ones upset that we picked Drai over Bennett, it doesn't bug me now.

When it comes to the success of the Oilers and me eating crow, it always tastes delicious.

That being said, I really think there is still a great player in Bennett. It almost seemed like he did a "Baertschi-like" regression. And apparently he's only asking for $3 million. You're telling me there isn't a team out there that would offer him upwards of $3,755,233 in an offer sheet and only give up a 2nd round pick?

I almost think the Oilers should do it but I can see Burke, Treliving and company coming back and attacking any RFA's the Oilers wuld have coming up.

With RNH as good as gone maybe it's a good 3rd line C alternative?

The issue with Bennett is what is he? I think the high end for him is a good second line player but he could also be a 3rd liner. I am not convinced he is a center. In 81 games last year he had 13 goals, 26 pts. Doesn't exactly scream 2nd liner based on that production. He's young so there is room to grow. But give the way he was last year and the previous year of only 36 pts, if I am the Flames or any team, I would be paying him anymore than signing him to a 2 yr deal at 2.5 max. Similar to what Yak got from the Oilers a few years ago. If he produces, then at the end of the deal he gets a raise. If he stays in the mid teens in goals and 30's in pts, then he is paid accordingly as that is 3rd line production. No way I pay him close to 4 mill.

I'd take him for sure if the price wasn't too high. And for games against the Flames he'd be stapled to 97s hip including PP1. Ensuing CP meltdowns would be delicious.

That's a good deal for both parties.

Bennett has a lot to prove, so a bridge deal makes sense.

Welp, he just signed for 1.95M AAV over 2 years. Not bad for either side. That's like 100k per slew foot.

Pretty close to what I thought they should sign him to, a contract similar to the Yak contract of 2 years for around 2 mill. He put up 3rd liner numbers over the past few seasons and he's being paid like a 3rd liner. Makes sense to me. If he produces over the next few seasons, he gets a nice raise and he is young enough he has plenty of time to make big money. If he doesn't, you are paying in the appropriate dollars for a 3rd liner. Like I said I think his high end is a second liner, probably a winger. You can't overpay for guys like him.

Lowe would have pushed for a 6x6, because, you know, potential.

Bennett screams Yakupov to me. A player with a ton of hype and expectation who just doesn't pan out to what everyone thought. Still early but he's been less than impressive. Most players drafted as high as he was with the expectations he had show something by their 3rd year.
