It would have been nice to get the 30 yr old Ference instead of the 34 yr old Ference. But the guy gave what he had when he played.

He's an environmentalist though, doesn't that take him down a couple of pegs in your view? Maybe down to "Decent Alberta Boy".

Nah, winning a cup and being from Alberta inherently makes him one of the good ones. I shouldn't be so glib about him retiring. By all accounts he's a good guy that worked hard.

No one else has said it, so I will: Another OBC mistake goes away.

Ference was a good enough blueliner in his youth, but not so much as he got older. Of course, that's when MacT decided to throw money at him. Well, as least he should be good for retirement.

His tenure as an Oilers player wasn't great. His best years were gone, and his contract ended up being about two years too long... something many of us feared.

But off-the-ice? I loved everything about what he did as captain. It was nice to see him become so involved in our community, connect the team to the city, and set an example in that regard for younger players (and ordinary citizens). It was something that had been lacking somewhat in prior years from the organization; glad he'll be around Edmonton post-career to continue this.

Wish him all the best.

Though I wasn't ever able to do it. I thought his workout thing he did when he came to Edmonton was really cool. While a lot of players would rather have nothing to do with fans as much as possible, he voluntarily showed up I believe really early in the morning to work out with fans.

The crazy thing is he was an 8th round draft pick. With 907 games played, that's a pretty long, damn good career for a guy drafted that late. Not many taken that low ever even play a single game.

Thank You Ference for all that you've done in the Edmonton community. A class act all the way.

I salute you sir. Be well in your retirement.
