1.1$ million for 1 season.

Great value.

Good signing. Little bit of risk, since he had a down year last season, but he's only 1 season away from 60 points.

Good guy to have in the room for Puljujarvi, I'd imagine.

34 years old, so not ancient by any means. Adds a layer of competition for ice time on the roster, which I like.

Centre
McDavid
Draisaitl (RFA)
Nugent-Hopkins
Letestu
Khaira

Left Wing
Maroon
Lucic
Jokinen
Caggiula
Pakarinen

Right Wing
Strome
Slepyshev
Puljujarvi
Kassian

It's not bad, but that right side still looks weak. We could see some left shots moving over if the young guys can't deliver.

Now is the roster done other than Draisaitl? Or is Chiarelli going to get a defenceman to deal with the absence of Sekera?

I think JJ has been known to play some RW as well. No doubt he ends up there at least some of the time.

Center and left are solid. Right wing wouldn't look too bad if you knew Puljujarvi was ready to take the next step this season, but I've seen nothing to suggest that's the case. I still like the idea of playing RNH on the wing, though, and Jokinen can play center. So then you end up with

Maroon/McDavid/RNH
Lucic/Drai/Strome
Caggiula/Jokinen/(Slepy/Kass)
Pakarinen/Letestu/(Slepy/Kass)

Which is a little less concerning. Of course, if Pulju does light it up this season, that'd be great, but I don't think we should be moving forward with that assumption. I think Jagr might still be in the plans, but later in the summer.

Puljujarvi is barely older than the guys picked in this year's draft. Youngest in the first round of his draft class last year, I believe. I would really like to see the Oilers find one more top-nine guy so that they can put him back in the farm for at least a few more months. Why rush him?

I don't think we will acquire anyone else, but it would be nice to see it happen. I don't understand the rush to get him in the lineup. Make him force the team's hand...he'll be a better player for it.

Totally agreed. Unfortunately, we live in an era of instant gratification; young players getting paid big money early, with prime minutes being gifted to way to many that are undeserving / not ready.

I said it in the speculation thread, this is a good signing. I don't see it as a risk at all. The guy plays all forward positions, wins faceoffs, can be on your PK, is great in the shoot out. He's a career 53% faceoff guy.
Apparently its a 1 yr, 1,1 mill contract. Are you kidding me? Now it's a GREAT signing.

Wonder if this trend of 1M good vets keeps going. It has to if the 10M club keeps getting bigger and the NHLPA refuses to use the escalator to the max.

There ya go, McDavid contract saving gets you 75% of a good vet every summer :) Or 3.5M of someone at the deadline.

Man his offensive production fluctuates a lot. Interesting signing, 3rd line player maybe some offensive spark and secondary scoring?!

Hopefully he has a bounce back year. As people said, this makes a lot of sense as well with Pulju's struggles with the language barrier last year.

He plays all positions, is decent on faceoffs, PK's a ton, can skate well & is a good team guy. This is a value pick up (depending on term & $$$).
I bet he plays a lot of RW for us.

Apparently its a 1 yr, 1.1 mill deal. Fantastic signing!! It's one of those savy, depth signings that all these other good teams seem to be able to do.

How will this help the goal of rushing kids to the league with too much pressure on their shoulders? Think before you speak.

Right wing of Strome, Jagr, Iginla, Kassian?

Could be an all-star lineup from before McDavid was born...well, other than Strome and Kassian.

Not much to add that hasn't already been said, but if he can account for Pouliot's offense, use that 53% face off winning percentage in big moments, PK, he's a great value pickup. Would have been nice if he was a right shot.

Wow that's a good signing for Chiarelli. I'd be even more pleased if he played on the right side, but he's here for the 3rd line and teams, but might be able to spot in on the top 6 if Looch or Paddy aren't going.

Hasn't Jokinen been the basis of rumors to the Oilers in years past?

Apparently there was a push to claim him when he was on waivers with Carolina, but the Oil opted not to and traded for Jerred Smithson instead.

I like to think of Jerred Smithson as a step in the pathway to Connor McDavid.

1.1$ million for 1 season.

Great value.

I think you may have been referring to Olli Jokinen

Olli could have been, I think there were rumors of Jussi when he was with the Canes.

Apparently there was a push to claim him when he was on waivers with Carolina, but the Oil opted not to and traded for Jerred Smithson instead.

I like to think of Jerred Smithson as a step in the pathway to Connor McDavid.

Smithson -> MacT -> Eakins -> McDavid

it does check out.

I'm still looking forward to seeing him dress in Gladiator garb if Kirill Maksimov ever makes the team.

I've never wanted a guy to make the NHL more than the moment I read this.

Stauffer (with Nicholson on the show) said one reason Jokinen signed here was because there was an opportunity to win the cup. Glad he didn't get three years for that comment.

Ahh, the good old days. Jump to 8:05 in this if you want to go down memory lane.

Oh Oil Change. The forever proof that the Oilers management really thought they were building something special. And of course proof of how hands off Lowe was with management.

I skipped to 8:05 and it honestly started raining outside.

Sun was out when I grabbed my iPad.

Every time I watch it I feel I have a greater appreciation of where we ended up in the present. I also realize more and more as I get older how much of an amateur operation the Oilers were back then. It's really quite pitiful to watch how these guys were bumbling around and the things they valued and chose to focus on. Probably a light year behind the curve of any successful org, even back then.

And just the level of self satisfaction carried by so many of these guys, after finishing friggin last in the NHL 2 years in a row, lol. I feel there are some real life lessons to be gained by watching this.

It's far too soon still for me to be looking at this train wreck from the past....
