Best player in the league, and we have him for at least 9 more years.

I'll take it.

Not to mention that the amount isn't as high as some had feared it would be. Now to see what Drai winds up signing for.

Honestly, how long before Katz the Younger is given an executive position in the organization? Definitely before the end of McDavid's contract.

I love the deal too. As vsove said, he's best player in the league. Worth every penny in my mind.

Hmmmm...this is pretty darn close to what I've been thinking all along:

McDavid is going to get a ginormous contract for his second deal. If he were to go to RFA, someone would offer him 7 years at the max dollars. Knowing that, the Oilers need to start winning and make him believe he wants to be here. It's the only way he signs an extension for anything less than the absolute top dollar.

I think even then, we can expect his second deal will be in the neighbourhood of $12MM/season. Maybe he's a numbers guy like Crosby and it'll be $97MM for eight years.

Off by $375,000/year with my prediction of over a year ago.

I'm excited that the number is lower than initially anticipated but kind of sucks that the best news of the off-season was something that was expected anyway.

I hope this brings down Drai's ridiculous ask and Chia can start making a few more tweaks to the team.

The Oilers have Connor McDavid until 2025-2026 Wave Towel

Ummm...Drai's reputed ask.

There's been no confirmation from anyone involved as to what he's actually asked for. And it's a contract negotiation, so I expect their side to start high and focus on the fact that he was top ten in the league in scoring in both regular season and playoffs this year.

I really dislike the anger in the last week from people (moreso on twitter than here) including David Staples, about the asks from the Oilers top players. Their agents are hired to get them contracts that reflect their value. It isn't always going to be an easy negotiation, and it's okay for them to try for as much as they can get.

You're out of your depth here, Adam. Leave the wrestling gimmick commentary to people more suited for it. If anything, I see myself in the role of The Miz here, but that reference likely isn't old school enough for you to 'get it'.

I guess...how old were Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair when they finally stopped getting in the ring? Wrestling does have its fair share of oldtimers.

Some guys go into their 50's. It's actually a sport (entertainment) for old guys. Youngsters are too reckless and generally don't understand the psychology until their late 20's.

Sweet cream on a ice cream sandwich it didn't take much to disrail this thread. Btw NJPW is epic. It's like good wrestling used to be.

It's the dog days of summer...thread derails are just about the only thing keeping the conversation alive. There's not a lot to talk about as hockey execs all bail for the beach. Look at TSN right now. The columns there include:

- Galchenyuk vows to help Habs win next season
- Subban still not over Cup Final loss
- 'Taste of success' is keeping McDavid hungry for more

Sooooo, basically hockey players want to win, hate to lose and losing in the Stanley Cup final still stings three weeks later.

I'm just sad that the ball-dropping gifs derail didn't take off more. Serves me right for leading off with the kangaroo. How do you top that?

And to put this thread back on topic:

Hacksaw Jim Duggan also approves of the McDavid signing!

Speaking of old wrestlers wrestling when they're way too old, Hacksaw was in the Royal Rumble a couple years back. He was awful.

Hmmmm...this is pretty darn close to what I've been thinking all along:

Adam wrote on Tue, 21 June 2016 15:10

McDavid is going to get a ginormous contract for his second deal. If he were to go to RFA, someone would offer him 7 years at the max dollars. Knowing that, the Oilers need to start winning and make him believe he wants to be here. It's the only way he signs an extension for anything less than the absolute top dollar.

I think even then, we can expect his second deal will be in the neighbourhood of $12MM/season. Maybe he's a numbers guy like Crosby and it'll be $97MM for eight years.

Off by $375,000/year with my prediction of over a year ago.

#selfcongratulations

I predicted exact $12.5M for McDavid and $7.5M for Draisatl. Think I might be off on Leon but I will also self congratulate for being right with McDavid.

Not too shabby. Sign up Drai for 7-7.5 and we have both at 20 or under for a long time.

Could have gone a lot differently, hard to temper the demands but the Oilers could only sell based on team-building ability and Cup opportunities, I think kudos to a degree for both sides in this.

Eyes on Draisaitl deal now, I was hoping for 18 for the pair at season's end, but if they're at 19.5 or 20 AAV for both, that's doable. I'm thinking paying Drai $7 mil to $7.5 per for 1RW moreso than $7 to 7.5 for #2C.

Boils down to the fact that you'd rather 'overpay' (if that term even applies) for your best 2 players than overpay a similar amount for 2 middling players. I just don't see how they can go higher than $7.5 given comparables for Draisaitl and the fact that they can't give elite 1C money (anywhere else in the league) to 1RW or 2C player for his second contract.

Just a fantastic deal for us (not him) but us as fans and the team - despite the crop of boob tube management executives that are part of the org..

Thank you Connor.

Let's win the cup in spite of the management team!

So, the 0.75M shave vs the widely reported 13.25 adds ~3.5M worth of player that can be acquired at the trade deadline. So, it's not insignificant.

The Oilers scored 217 goals during 5v5 & 5v4 play. McDavid was on the ice for 114 of those.
That's 52.5%. He's probably underpaid at $20MM/yr
