So pissed right now. Tiny wingers? really? 22 picks in and the Oilers are only the second team dumb enough to draft a winger.

Nice little video put together on the kid by Sportsnet.

His grandfather choking up at the end hits you right in the soft spot. Welcome to the Oilers Kailer and best of luck!

You literally don't know anything about this pick do you?

One of the most skilled players in the draft. Hats off to Chiarelli and co. making this pick icon_thumbsup icon_thumbsup

Eberle replacement secured. #22 pick in 2017 after #22 in 2008 :)

Goes against conventional wisdom of Chia beliefs. Takes the small super skilled guy.

Hope he proves me wrong, and they went with the kid with the most skill left, but with Vesalainen left on the board, that's a stinger.

That kid supposed to be good? He has like 3 goals in the last 2 years. Serious question - know nothing about him (like most prospects)

He had an up and down year; battled in Sweden, went back to Finland and actually was the MVP of the U-18 tournament.

I for one find it hilarious they make this pick, in this spot, the day after trading Jordan Eberle

Could have been intentional :)

Yamamoto scored 99 points last season too! And was a +14!

And bonus, he kinda looks like Yakupov

Size could be an issue, but his points in junior have been in the front of the pack. Great hands, great work ethic.

Comparisons to Martin St. Louis, though it sounds like Johnny Gaudreau is the closer comparable, at least for now.

I think it's a good pick. Further down than his final ranking.

At #22 I think this is a good pick. If he was 3 inches and 20 pounds heavier, those point totals would have him going near the top of the draft. I think it is a safer play to select the smaller player who posts points and hope he can overcome the size issues, than to select the larger player who does not post lots of offense and hope he develops that part of his game.

Granted, I haven't followed this draft closely, so I don't really offer a lot of authority on this.

But I'm cautiously optimistic. He seems to have a lot of things going for him. Fast, skilled, crushed it at the combine. The size thing... let's hope he has some room to grow.

Comparables being thrown around: Gaudreau, Briere, Johnson, etc. If he's anything like those guys, it'll be a good pick. Throw him on a line with Draisaitl and Lucic, and the size issue seems to diminish somewhat.

It is kind of funny that the last player picked at 22 was Jordan Eberle, because there does seem to be some comparable traits.

We'll see. Hoping for the best.

Biggest thing for these little guys is the work ethic. Gotta work your butt off to build up those legs to keep a low center of gravity and explosiveness in your step. Gotta be able to skate and stickhandle with your head up at all times with a league full of freight trucks looking to send you flying. And gotta be fearless and willing to take on those monsters every night.

Does sound like this kid has the qualities needed to be an NHLer as a small guy, but those are just the prerequisites :)

Yamamoto's answer to "why should we draft you?" query at combine: "Because if you don't I'll come back to haunt you." Chiarelli liked that.

I didn't see a lot of big magumba's who can't skate on the team that won the cup this year. Lots of very good smaller players in the nhl these days. I like the choice.

This is just for laughs.

The Oilers history of American born 1st round selections:

StatsCentre‏ @StatsCentre
#Oilers historically haven't made US-born players their top picks very often, but Friday they settled on Spokane, WA native Kailer Yamamoto

The Oilers signed Yamamoto to his entry level contract...

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/oilers-sign-yamamoto/c-29064 1272?tid=281885062

..."Yamamoto, picked 22nd overall, appeared in 65 games with the Western Hockey League's (WHL) Spokane Chiefs last season, posting 99 points (42G, 57A), 46 penalty minutes and a plus 14 rating. He was also named to the 2016-17 WHL Western Conference Second All-Star Team.

The 5'8", 153-pound forward has appeared in 190 career WHL games, accumulating 227 points (84G, 143A) and 130 penalty minutes. He has also played in 12 playoff games, recording 10 points (3G, 7A) and 16 penalty minutes.".....

...he's had a pretty decent summer at various tournaments....should be interesting to see how he handles training camp....playing against the Golden Bears, the young stars in Penticton, regular training camp (Joey Moss Tournament), one of the first two preseason games vs. Calgary...I expect he will be back with Spokane by mid October...

....seems like a gritty player....I like grit....

How are the Oilers doing for contracts now? Think I saw the tally at 47 with Drai unsigned. If by some miracle Yamamoto stays, guess we could be at 49 to start the season.

Is there a reason that we seem to always be up against the contract limit every year? Most teams are mid-low 40's. We always seem to be talking every trade deadline about how we can't do crap because of the contract limit.

Has the team cleared out all of the dead money from the OBC's mismanagement prior to McDavid's arrival? If not, that would likely account for a good chunk.

I think the top up lately has been our love of AHL players that have no shot at making the NHL, but we give them 2-way deals anyways, instead of just getting some perma-AHLers.

Yamamoto getting heavier...

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/rookie-media-day-content/c-2 90894224?tid=281885062

....."The forward, after attending Day 1 of Oilers Rookie Camp and having gone through fitness tests, is listed at 5-foot-8 and 153-pounds. At the NHL Scouting Combine in June, Yamamoto was around 146-pounds, making it clear that his off-season goal of putting on some weight was achieved.".....

...probably will lose some of the mass at Penticton, but it seems like his health and conditioning are on the right track....
