Rangers need to drop Jooris or Mcilrath to the minors and require waivers, would you flip Reinhart for Mcilrath? Helps with the all important Lefty Righty combination as Mcilrath is a rightly. Could fit in nicely with Russel, also he is 6' 5" 236 pounds, then you can push Nurse down to continue working on his game in Bakerfields. Also get rid of the failed Reinhart experiment.

Klefbom - Larson
Russel - Mcilrath
Sekera- Gryba
Davidson - Fayne

Why would the Rangers do that move straight up. I can't imagine anyone trading a NHL d man for a minor leaguer straight up. Reinhart is beyond over rated. Has been since his oil king days

I don't know if the Rangers would do that or not, but isn't the issue that the Rangers could lose him if they waive him and the trade would garner a return because they know he'd be gone for nothing? Not a position of strength for the Rangers, by the looks of it.

Is Mcilrath an NHLer? Looking at his stats, he looks like a more sure bust than Reinhart.

Well, he did play half an NHL season last year, so he's cracked the NHL on a semi-regular basis, something that Reinhart has yet to do. He's a year older; he's scored a couple NHL goals. I don't think either are surefire bets, but the fact that McIlrath has cracked an NHL lineup probably is a plus in his column.

But he's far from a sure thing.

I think he's closer to 2 years older. Has 1 more NHL game under his belt than Reinhart.

Looking at his stats, his play last year was mainly being the stayhome guy playing with Yandle against the weakest possible competition. And I guess he did keep his head above water though.

Tough call. I certainly don't see anything that suggests he's more than a 6/7.

IMO, there's no way Sekera is bumped to third line minutes. He is playing near-perfect hockey in his role, and Russell and Sekera have been a surprisingly effective pairing. If McIlrath comes, it's likely Gryba and Fayne that are being sent to the AHL.

So, to me, that's the question: Do you want to move out an asset to replace Eric Gryba? Is McIlrath better than Eric Gryba?

I don't think McIlrath would bump any of our top six (when they are all healthy)... I have him behind all of Klefbom, Larsson, Sekera, Russell, Davidson, and Nurse. But if the Oilers feel he is an upgrade on Gryba, perhaps this makes sense; he could be that #7 who moves into the lineup when there's injuries. Doesn't necessarily balance out the RH / LH scenerio, though.

Klefbom / Larsson
Sekera / Russell
Nurse / Davidson
McIlrath

AHL: Benning, Oesterle, Gryba, Fayne

In the end, seems somewhat lateral, though perhaps you are getting a young NHLer instead of gambling on Reinhart becoming one.

McIlrath is on waivers. Would anyone claim him? I don't know a ton about him but he looks like a younger Gryba. Right now they have Benning in the pressbox which isn't ideal. I am not sure.

Didn't Benning get sent down? We should absolutely claim McIlrath.

Benning was recalled before the Heritage Classic.

I don't think there's anything in the stats for McIlrath that suggest he's a big upgrade on what we have. I'd pass.

Nurse is never going back to the AHL.

I actually believe that 80 games is the threshold he needs to hit for waiver eligibility...he's sitting at 78 right now.

Honestly, I think he's looked better this year than last. Playing him less minutes on the third pairing is a big factor there. Less heavy lifting is key for a young defender.

To update:

https://www.capfriendly.com/waivers-faq

As a 21 year old, Darnell Nurse is eligible for waivers as soon as he plays his 80th game. So unless they send him down this week, he's never going back to the AHL.

Yakupov got us a ham sandwich. You're expecting an NHL player for Reinhart?

Apparently Rangers fans are super PO'd that Mcilrath is on waivers and blame Vigneault saying the coach just hates him and won't give him a chance. So, I guess he's a D version of Yak? :)

How many games into the season before the waiver order switches from last years standings to this years?

Edit: Never mind, see it's Nov. 1st

Yeah Nov 1st so we still get early chance at claims despite being near the top :)

I'm not really sure what McIlrath brings that we don't already have though.

...doesn't sound like this trade will cause seismic shifts in the NHL power structure....
