Because the Oilers new slogan really deserves it's own thread.

http://instagram.com/p/gv3LKemzJi/

I just googled it. Here's a few things I found:

Quote:

There is a Zen saying, "Before Enlightenment chop wood carry water, after Enlightenment, chop wood carry water."

http://zenrevolution.wordpress.com/2012/04/28/chop-wood-carr y-water/

Quote:

The essence of living a spiritual life is contained in the Zen quote “when hungry eat, when tired sleep.” Now before your mind reacts and you say to yourself….’Gee thanks for that incredibly obvious piece of wisdom.’ Look at this quote more closely, along with the initial passage above ‘before enlightenment chop wood, carry water…after enlightenment chop wood, carry water.’ Break life down into the simplicity of the present moment. As human beings we do not live in the present moment. We carry our past forward with us, we yearn for something in the future and all the time we miss what is in front of us at all times. Life is beautiful right in front of us at every moment. Focusing on this moment right now removes the mind from drifting to wants, needs, desires….all driven by the mind in search of attachment. With attachment comes suffering.

Nice life message. Terrible slogan for a hockey team. Don't yearn for the Stanley Cup, enjoy the losses that are in front of you right now, Boys.

My god, this team really can't do anything right.

ETA:

Quote:

When we open awareness to the tasks in our lives they become lighter. When we are able to be in the moment, we no longer feel compelled to watch the clock. Whatever your work might be, bring all of yourself to it. When you are fully present, you may find that your labor is no longer a burden. Wood is chopped. Water is carried. Life happens.

http://www.interluderetreat.com/meditate/chop.htm

That one even has a better Buddhist saying, if that's really what we need up in our dressing room - "Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success."

In hockey terms, isn't this essentially the cliche, "Take it one game at a time."

I really, really, really hope that Ryan Smyth starts using "chop wood carry water" in his interviews. #ZenMasterSmyth

The Oilers are a lot like that crazy aunt/uncle. The more you find out about them the more embarrassed you are.

I can't imagine you connect with early 20-something athletes by talking Zen spirituality.

Although, just in case there ARE any 20-something athletes reading this, here's a few more thoughts for you:

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Talk:Zen_proverbs

There's something for everyone in there. This one is for Oilers management:

Quote:

Muso Kokushi
It is better to practice a little than talk a lot.

This one for Nail Yakupov:

Quote:

Baba Ram Dass
The quieter you become, the more you can hear.

And for Dallas Eakins:

Quote:

Wu-men
The instant you speak about a thing, you miss the mark.
If you're attached to anything, you surely will go far astray.

For the Oilers party boys:

Quote:

Wu-men
Better to sit all night than to go to bed with a dragon.

Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.

Make the small plays... win the 1 on 1 battles, clear the puck, complete the breakout pass, get the puck in deep, finish the check... and the wins will take care of themselves.

I think this would be more appropriate:

"Chop Wood, Carry Water, Hope your Daddy is on the Coaching Staff"

I think it's quite applicable. Basically saying that no matter who you are or what level you're at, the fundamental work needs to be put in.

perfect message as far as I'm concerned.

It means, quite simply, work hard. Before you figure it out (enlightenment) work hard, after you figure it out (enlightenment) continue to work hard. I like it. Almost seems like the boys figured it out tonight. Those cycles during the last 1/2 of the game was figuring it out. Chopping wood.

Absolutely agree. There is a massive need to get back to basic hockey fundamentals and start out-working the opponents. We have some holes on this team, but we would be monumentally better if we actually "went through the wall" , "win some battles" , etc. that means getting back to basics....."chop wood. Carry water" the rest will take card of itself! It does sound a bit corny, but it is definately what we need.
