Left Wing
Born Dec 4 1992 -- Shaunavon, SASK
[20 yrs. ago]
Height 6.03 -- Weight 196 -- Shoots L
Acquired:
4th round (111th overall), 2011
The Edmonton Oilers have acquired forward Kale Kessy from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for forward Tobias Rieder.
Kessy has scored 21 goals and 22 assists in 60 games this season with the Kamloops Blazers, Medicine Hat Tigers and Vancouver Giants of the WHL.
Rieder recorded 27 goals and 29 assists with 12 penalty minutes in 52 games with the OHL's Kitchener Rangers this season. Last season, he led the OHL with 13 goals and 14 assists in 16 postseason games.
Talent Analysis
A tall, rangy winger, Kessy is a highly aggressive player who will hit and challenge anyone. Doesn’t possess a great deal of offensive ability but is an energetic player who certainly won’t shy away from a fisticuffs.

Looks like Kessy is having a decent run in the WHL playoffs. 4 goals and 2 assists in 4 playoff games. Lowe/Tambo probably think they hit a home run
MacT: Talk is cheap
Kevin Lowe: blah blah blah I won lots of cups so I know about winning blah blah blah I made the best oiler trade ever blah blah blah

I feel like we got the short end of the stick on this trade...
Rieder had been trending very nicely the last couple of seasons, and although his production tapered off this year, he's a solid, solid player with a lot of upside.
I feel like we traded a possible Jere Lehtinen upside player with a kid that looks and plays more like a Brad Winchester.
Trading for coke machines has REALLY worked out well for the Oilers in the past. This is likely a bad call.

Honestly have no idea who Kessy is or what he projects like as a pro.
I think Reider is a decent prospect and I'm a little disappointed to let him go... but at the same time, he was going to have a hard time cracking the Oilers lineup. Sounds like Kessy's skill set at least is a little bit more what the Oilers will need in the coming years.

Just last night I saw him score a hat-trick against the Victoria Royals. That's pretty much all I know about the guy. Big fella, I guess we need more of that.

By the numbers sounds like a good deal for all. Kessy has size which we need badly.
Reider is a good player, but we have a surplus of small & skill. He wasn't going to get a shot with the Oil. Better shot with the Yotes.

Insurance in case Mitch Moroz doesn't pan out. Mean 4th liner that can skate is the hope I think. Oil rolling the dice, Tobias wasn't going to get a chance here, would have been Omark part two.

Meh. Rieder has a higher ceiling for sure. I understand the point of attaining a meaner player, but I would have held On to Rieder longer. Better to let him play in the AHL next year and develop his game more. Who knows where the Oilers will be in two or three years. It looks hard for him to make the lineup now, but things can change quickly. And if he does turn out, but can't crack the top six, maybe you trade him then for something better.
Can't get to upset about a trade like this, because both guys are still long shots, but I would have kept the more talented player.

I wish. Steve Passmore could have been something.
Bozon and Lipon would be nice though.

Another hatty and a 2nd star tonight for the Shaunavon product in a 6-2 Blazers win. 7-2-9 now in 6 playoff games.

Here's the post I just made on this on HF:
I'm a Royals season ticket holder and was at both of the games that he got hattricks in. I'll share what I was from him. I'll have to start off by saying I think that people getting so worked up on this thread to be crazy... mid-level prospects we're talking about here folks. I'm surprised you guys don't have anything better to do than to invest so much time debating this deal. Just unreal.
I'll also say that I liked the deal when it was made, and still do. But I'm not sure that he showed a lot in getting those hatricks.
He's a big guy, and all he had to do, epsecially on the powerplay, is park himself in from of the Royals goaltender Polivka. The Royals defenders were not able to deal with him at all. The Royals defenders are either small, young, poor defensively, or experienced and big but useless (cough Fransoo cough). As a unit I like a number of the Royals defenders, but each had a weakness that led to them not handling him well. None of them could deal with a big, strong 20 year old who was making a habit of planting himself in front of the goaltender. This combined with the fact the Blazers kept the Royals busy by generally controlling the play made Kessey hard to deal with. The Blazers just needed to fire pucks at the net and have Kessey there to whack away at rebounds while the defense just wasn't able to clear him out in time. It wasn't like he was buzzing around scoring nice goals. They were greasy, all within a few feet of the net if I recall correctly.
So I'm not sure if this supports the folks who don't like the deal - I really don't think he'll keep this up at all against better competition. On the other hand, I think this is how a guy of his nature will score goals, perhaps this is a good indication of what he can do in the future? I don't know. I saw there weren't any Royals fans posting thoughts on his hattricks, so I thought I'd share my thoughts...

Yeah Cam looks like a bust, just when you think the Oil scouting is top notch.... we all think Stu is awesome .. but to be real, until some of the picks outside of the recent #1 overalls turn into good NHL'ers, the jury should still be out..
Also teh scouting staff that brought us Belanger for 3 years..

And Kessy gets two more goals in the last two games vs. Kelowna, for a total of 9 in 9 playoff games.
I saw him play the 1st game against Kelowna on TV, kid is big, and knows what to do around the net, fearless, opposing d-men could not move him, and from what I saw, a decent skater. Good upside IMHO.

Now give him an OT winner to boot...also on the PP. 11 goals in 10 games. He thinks it's October and his name is Bryan Savage!
