9.25 I thought?

That $250,000 means the difference between using the 2026 2nd or the 2026 1st at the TDL with Holland at the helm

My mistake.. yes 9.25.. we can use that 0.25 to add to the bucket to resign Kane.

Why was Nurse's extension done so early again? Guaranteed after this year he would have came for around 6.5 per.. 7 tops

That was an unforced error, but the Oilers are terrified of offer sheets, and if you do these contracts early enough you have more cabin time in the summer. Who wants to sit around a stuffy old office hammering out legal details on a contract when you could be in the Okanagan with a cold one in your hand? Those beers ain't going to drink themselves, you know!

That a cheap shot. Yes, it's probably true, but it's 2022 and a surprising amount of work can be done from an Okanagan golf course. Or Muskoka. Whatever.

I'd imagine the real reason what Nurse's people signaled they weren't going to negotiate after a certain point to put pressure on the team. They understood Nurse's value, their leverage and acted in their best interests. The Oilers, understanding they HAVE ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE DEFENSE, were forced to cave. Just a guess.

Wouldn't Nurse have been UFA this summer without a new deal? Thus it would be fear of Nurse bolting for greener pastures, rather than an offer sheet fear that would have prompted it.

I admittedly may be wrong about this.

You are correct. He would have been UFA at season end, but instead he and his agent saw an opportunity with the crazy deals handed out to other dman and decided to jump to get Nurse an inflated contract.

So if the Oilers didn't sign the contract, you don't think Nurse could get 9mil+ on the open UFA market this summer from somebody?

We'll never know, but I bet it would be pretty close to that.

I just heard Gregor on his show talking Nurse and every single number defensively is up in a good way and up significantly compared to last year. So defensively he's even better than last year. The only number of all his stats that is down, is the goals he scored.

I have no doubt that if Nurse hit the open market, he would get 9 mill easy. He's a big, physical, tough, nasty, skates like the wind, puck rushing, puck moving, play all situations, big min playing dman, really good at scoring 5 on 5 who in a full season will hover around 8-10 goals, 35-40 points on top of being a good in the community, good team guy. That's WITH not a ton of PP time. He has 7 goals, 28 pts in 57 games.

He'd get multiple offers north of 9 mill if he hit the open market.

I don’t think he’d get over 9, no. Though, like you said we’ll never know.

The contracts for Dmen were inflated beyond belief last summer. I slander Nurse and his non hockey sense but I’m glad we have him and not Werenski.

Oilers went to the whip against the Derby hopeful, then followed up with the loss to the claimer contender who's the real rival. confused2

What a damned letdown in the game of the 2 that needed to be won.

NHL Refs with the Team USA bias.. score management.. since ever.

Darnel Nurse needs to learn how to play defence, he's a mess.
Kulack and Ceci might wind up being our 1st pair.

Puljujarvi looks like he got in a time machine and went back to his rookie year.. big swoops.. aimless coverage.. he was actually stopping on the puck at the start of this season, looked like he finally got it, a real turn around.. but looks he's back to old habits. Gets the puck from LD and then passes it right back at him in coverage.. so many Grade A shots he passes up.. he needs some Woodcrafting.

At least SJ beats Calgary, and Winni beats Vegas 4-0 ..

I think the Knights need to get those gold chrome helmets polished up..

At least SJ beats Calgary, and Winni beats Vegas 4-0 ..

I think the Knights need to get those gold chrome helmets polished up..

Need the preds to beat LA in regulation

Yeah this Dallas/Ref loss is looking like a 4 pointer if LA wins.

Nurse is the worst top 4 d in league. He needs a game or two in press box. Novice like play. Also time for Drai to get his act together too.

Meh - most importantly, Vegas lost. We have two games in hand on them and up 3 points. Our way in is likely to be top 3 in the Pacific and not the wildcard. Would be nice to pass LA - we have 2 games left against them plus a game in hand so definitely in our hands, but whatever. Don't think we'll be catching Calgary unless they go on a big skid.

As for this game - again, officiating is atrocious. If I didn't have so many years invested watching this league, I would say F this. So frustrating. So many times it feels like the other teams mauls us with impunity while our guys need to walk on eggshells, and even still they get sent off for the most ticky tacky crap.

Really too bad they couldn't at least hang on for the single point, let alone 2.

So how about Kane and McDavid on the PK? Wow - I certainly reservations having them being in the line of fire and risking injury, but there is no doubt that they would be getting into opposing D's heads. You're not talking Archibald and Turris here. If you whiff on your pinch, that is McDavid and Kane headed the other way...

And is it me, or had Kane's top gear doubled since his first week with the team? Man - he's getting fast.

Like I said, don't like them having pucks shot at them, but without question Dmen will be a LOT more mindful of who the PKers are.

I think if Woody puts out Kane and McD every once and a while it'll really get into opposing teams heads.. get some PP specialist on D and next thing yoy know its 2 on 1 with McD flying by him like a bullet.

I said previously thatit'd take 20 games to get his legs in shape and its working out about right on cue.. he didn't have a training camp or pre-season games.. so his regular season is just starting! icon_nod

Sloppy, sloppy play late in that game. Wake up boys.

I wonder if the coaches and the whole team needs to have a sit down chat with Nurse and just let him know that they got your back, they know what to do and you don't have to try to do everyone else's job. I find that when Nurse has a rough game and makes mistakes, it's because he's trying to do too much and cover for everyone else.

On the Hintz goal, it sure looked like the Oilers had it well covered. Ceci was on his side. Nurse in the middle, 2 wingers on the far side. So 4 guys at the blueline. There were 2 Stars on Ceci's side and you can see Nurse cheat over to Ceci's side I assume thinking he needed to help him which opened up a lane for Hintz. Now I think it was Yamo who I don't know why, turned his back to Hintz and Hintz can absolutely FLY but if Nurse just keeps his position and let's Ceci worry about his, that goal doesn't happen because Nurse is there to flatten Hintz.

Oh my god, there are so many reasons. I could write a terrible blog about all the reasons AND do an incoherent podcast in my head.

The Oilers are lucky Vegas went into an inexplicable swan dive.

What has happened to Darnell? His play has nosedived since Playfair was replaced by Manson.

Has it though? From everything I've seen, under Woodcroft and Manson, Ceci and Nurse are taking a huge share of the hard minutes. Apparently both other pairs are being used more like third pairings, with Nurse/Ceci doing all the heavy lifting. We have been generally pretty good since Woodcroft took over.

By all accounts, last night was a tough one for Nurse, but that's going to happen to everyone from time to time. It's a tough loss against a team we would have really liked to beat given where the standings are at, but it happens.

I am a big believer in not drawing any conclusions on a team over a single loss, or a few specific plays. Don't get too high on wins, or too low on losses. The sun still came up today and there's lots of hockey left to play.

From what some of the Edmonton media guys who do numbers have been saying, Nurse is having a good year. The offensive production is down a little from last season but his overall play has been good especially considering how much he is asked to play, how many situations he plays in and the level of competition he goes up against every night.

I really do not get the hate that some of the fan base seems to have for the guy. He literally has done everything the team asks from him and at time more than he should have too. He gives the team everything he's got every game. He's invested in the community. The guy wants to be an Oiler and wants very badly to do everything he can to help the team win. You can see how much it bothers him when they lose so you know he cares a lot. He's a great team guy. Yet some in the fan base absolutely crucifies him if god forbid he makes the odd mistake or has an off night once in a while. You'd think based on the level of bashing he takes, that every player in the NHL is perfect and never makes a mistake and he's the only one that does.

In my opinion, there seems to be a unfair fixation on him and the money he makes. If you look at how good of a dman he actually is and what he does for his team over his career, he has been unpaid his entire career to date yet every single time he signs a new contract, people destroy him for it and call it an overpay. When he signed his 2 yr, 5.6 mill per deal, people absolutely lost their minds when it was floated they could sign him long term for around 7. Now if you look at what dmen get paid, paying him 7 would be an absolute STEAL. Now with his next contract that kicks in, I fully agree that isn't a value contract anymore, it's a market value one. As soon as Hamilton signed for 9 and Jones signed for 9.5 and Werensky signed for over 9.5, all of whom signed before him, that totally flipped the market for Nurse upside down. So he's getting market value now. So in my opinion, people need too get over the contract number and just appreciate how good Nurse really is.

Problems are at the top man.

Cap hell brought to you by a vacuum salesman who had fallen into a beauty non-cap world team that was a perennial horse until the Cap came into play.

The constant belief in a goalie who was in the league when said top players weren’t even born is a huge issue as well.

Did I mention the cap? It gets worse next year with a 3.25M(ish, I think) raise for a guy who has literal marbles in his head.

Hey but there's still those Art Rosses, Lindsay's, Hart's, and maybe Richards! I don't think we're going to see a Norris or a Vezina for a long time.

I think they blew their load on Colorado and didn't have it for this one. Strategic error.

Blaming Nurse’s contract reeks of Horcoff bashing. Analytics say Nurse is having a great season (with bad games that every player has), but we disregard the underlying numbers. The same fan base that cries for more analytical stats, disregards them when they are pushed to the forefront.

Nurse is marginally overpaid in the current market. Keith is vastly overpaid in a world of salary retention trades. Give me another dman making 500k too much over any dman making 3M too much.

And anyone who thinks Nurse is the worst top 4 dman in the league clearly has had multiple serious head traumas.

5-1-1 in their last seven and 12-6-2 under Woody. 107 point pace. Calm down people. Oilers PTSD is real.
