Get a new GM. GM find out if McDavid and Drai want to be here. If so, get a goalie and supporting cast. If not, trade now with term and get as much as you can. Don't wait until the last year of the contracts. I'd rather go through an Eric Lindros than a Wayne Gretzky.

This is still the worst take. Gretzky was not imminently going to be a UFA. He had three or four seasons to go - you had to be 31 to become unrestricted back then. He also had just had his wedding in Edmonton and he and his new wife were shopping for houses.

The fact is, more often trades for superstars are like the Gretzky deal than the Lindros deal, and as I laid out earlier this week, the Nords/Avs got lucky that Forsberg turned in to the player he did and they didn’t get another prospect from that draft instead. In case you think they had any inside knowledge on Forsberg, remember that they tried to dump the Flyers deal in favour of the New York package minutes later.

That was also before the salary cap - now a team is going to be looking to move at least 8-9MM of junk contracts back to us in any deal or asking us to retain some salary so we can be paying #97 still when he wins a Cup for another team.

On top of that, the Nords traded Lindros but they still had Salic, Sundin, Nolan - they had other building blocks. The Oilers have basically nothing without McDavid and Draisaitl. Remember we get outscored by a 2-to-1 margin when they’re not on the ice. What amount of picks, prospects, and older expensive guys are going to be needed to change that? Make no mistake, the “trade McDavid” plan is a stupid one.

But what if you know Vasilevskiy is going to start fighting with Cooper and demand a trade, and you know that a totally average goalie you get as part of the McDavid trade will be deemed an acceptable return for Vasilevskiy? THEN do you make the McDavid trade? :)

The generational fluke to be able to steal Roy had as much, if not more, to do with Colorado's 2 cups than the Lindros trade.

Agree with your position.

...but what if he requests a trade and fails to report to camp. Are we really going to suspend him? It's doubtful anyone outside of Edmonton will take our side.

The way I see it Lowe escaped the axe in 06 and we were cursed. The same happened again in 15 when the lottery balls made Connor's jaw drop. Cut the cancer out and let's start fresh. Heck we should take the banners down...even the Garth Brooks one.

I honestly had no problems with anyone but the goalie for the first 55 minutes. Play like that and you'll be fine.

Kostko tho. I don't know what to do about that.

Yes we need a goalie.

But if both teams traded goalies tonight the Oilers still would have lost.

55 minutes? Not from my view.

It needs to get embarrassing if the firings are gonna go all the way up. I still don't think this is enough, but it was definitely an embarrassment!

This isn’t Tippett. We fire him, it just keeps the underlying issue at bay.

This is a much deeper cut and the bleeding will not stop until it’s fixed.

How about with a healthy goaltender that has a battle level like no other?

Oh boy!! Could we get so lucky?? Babcock, Evander AND Smith? (We wouldn’t be allowed to call him Schmiddy anymore because that’s a Tippett moniker).

Can we just freaking bring in Torts already and change the culture of this damn team? So much complacency.

They came out like they were shot out of a cannon last night, and our absolutely terrible goalie and D situation eventually reared its head and a fragile team crumbled. When Darnell Nurse is your best Dman, and by a long shot, you're in trouble. We're seriously missing Klef and Larsson right now.

Sorry I watched this one, should have quit after the 1st period.

I think other than McDavid and Draisatl, Oilers must have the worst shooters in the league, forwards AND defense.

Please no trades involving prospects or draft picks, their pro-scouting is obviously one of the worst in the league, the team doesn't need any more Ryan Spooner transactions. What's the point anyway, no NHL first-string level goalie is coming, this current team wouldn't make it out of the 1st round.

This team is quietly sliding out of playoff contention, keep the 1st, it's looking to be lottery eligible.

Think I read/heard the scouts are meeting in Cali this week and Katz is part of the meetings? Can’t imagine those meetings are super productive.

Yeah they said the scouting meetings were the reason Holland wouldn't be firing Tippett right away. Not much of a multi-tasker.

Personally I was more surprised to learn we have pro scouts.

Katz has no answers. He’s hired an incompetent crew. Give Lowe the GM job back. Couldn’t be worse.

Oh man, could you imagine Lowe rotating back to GM. Ran out of Hockey Canada goofs to throw money at, so only option is Lowe again.

I think I would be officially done with the Oilers.

What if we did get a young up-and-comer but we had him play the role of Co-GM for the first few months with Lowe just showing him the ropes. Kind of like training wheels, ya know?

Sorry I watched this one, should have quit after the 1st period.

I think other than McDavid and Draisatl, Oilers must have the worst shooters in the league, forwards AND defense.

Please no trades involving prospects or draft picks, their pro-scouting is obviously one of the worst in the league, the team doesn't need any more Ryan Spooner transactions. If Co-G even gives a rats ass about analytics, I will listen.

Shooters are mostly fine. Snake bitten and gripping sticks.

This is on the goaltending and a couple defenders.

There’s just too much too fix.

Not poised this year. Likely not next year either.

Disagree. I think there is a fine line from bad to great and we have the pieces, unfortunately we’ve mismanaged our cap space and we don’t have a safety net.

We are screwed unless someone in the system becomes Dominek Hasek and saves some careers. Not that the player would get that opportunity.

What did this fan base do to deserve this futility?

That fine line perspective could be trotted out the past 4 seasons if you want to be honest.

My point is “too much to fix” with the squandered cap space, like you mention. Now it will be like trying to plug 12 holes in a dam with 10 fingers for this team. Wanna plug a hole, you will leak over here now.

It’s now an extended nightmare. Hiring Nicholson was a tragedy for this fan base.

Hey - give the brass a break. Who could predict that an executive who’d overseen Canada winning gold in 60% of the best on best Olympics wasn’t going to be a brilliant leader? I mean, he promised to go all forensic on the team! Twice!!!

Twice? I really had no idea.

Uh oh. Someone let Ryan Rishaug off the leash tonight!

The poor goaltending on this team is fully on Ken Holland. 2 years in a row he failed to address it, and now he is seeing it crush the spirit of his team. The Oilers showed up to play tonight, and goaltending (theirs and Floridas) decimated a fragile team again...

He's giving up on getting that next big scoop!

It could be a setup. Everyone wants to blame just goaltending. Holland can still blame Chia for the kostko deal. But now he can get credit for trying as we get hoses in a goalie trade.

What do you think we're going to give for Marc-Andre Fleury, who could have been had for free when we were over-paying for Duncan Keith?

Not often you get to get taken to the woodshed on two deals with the same team but different GMs within a calendar year...
