LOL. This team is a gong show.

The PK has gone to hell, the D has gone to hell, 5 goals against in the third to blow it against one of the worst teams in the NHL...

What a joke.

You start with Tippett. New coach is a band aid, and then you see if it stops the bleeding.

I'm fairly confident Bob Nicholson will give Holland a mile of rope so he can go Chiarelli mode and totally destroy the team beyond simple repair before firing him.

Welcome to the Dark Side, or as we long time fans call it: "Reality".

This current team just stinks of the mismanagement of 2000-20019. How do you build a liability around Connor McDavid??????????? Hire your buddies, old pals and former teammates and hope for a statistical anomaly.

31 other jerseys out there itching for his name and number.

Nicholson will hold onto Holland as a heatshield as long as he can.

Question is how long will Holland hold on to Tippett?

12 in a row behind the bench for the Tipp.

Won't really count on the record books to officially beat Eakins and Green for 11 in a row because of the 2 wins when Tip was in COVID protocol, but we all know it happened.

The worst loss of the season.
The 3rd D pair was absolutely useless.
Skinner looking more like an AHL back up.. if he's lucky

This team shouldn't spend one asset in trade, there is no point.

Your prob right but that decision should be mad closer to Trade deadline. At this point hire babcock. Sign Kane. Trade for chychrun. Nothing will matter until we have a goalie.

Well, I’d say who in their right mind would come here at this stage... but then it is Evander Kane we are talking about here.

You play Kassian as a top line RW.

You’re down Nuge, your 2LW/3C so you take your 2C and put him at 1LW.

You deserve this outcome.

This loss was mostly defense and goaltending.. they score 4 goals let in 5 weak efforts.
Maybe Playfair needs to go, bring in Manson, waive Lagesson, bring back nemo, and slap Bouchard in the face a few times to wake him up, get him off the bong, send him down to Bako. If you can talk Arizona into a trade for Chychrun and send then Bouchard plus, do it.

Well Perlini had a crappy shift, followed it up next shift with a goal and saw the ice one more time 5:23 total. Yamo was on for almost all of the ES goals against and got 16:20. I would put a touch of the loss on the bizarre coaching this team gets. They run lines not based on performance but on some kind of crystal ball, psychic intuition, pull em out of a hat, make em up on the spot hunches. The 4th line is not part of the future so it's not part of the now??? Freidman and Bieksa stated in the intermission that the Oilers need the bottom six fired up if they want to win. Coach promptly benched most of them. Brilliant strategies.

Dave Tippett outcoaches Dave Tippett. Why is this surprising? He’s done it every stop in his career.
0-12.
Chicago, swept by Winnipeg. More of the same.

While Holland is a joke, Tippett can fore himself off to the sun. I don’t care how many coaches this team has has. Maybe hire the right one for a change

You know, I actually didn't hate the lines tonight. They provided a bit more balanced attack then we often see with McDavid & Draisaitl together. Kassian is far from ideal, and had a bunch of bobbles tonight, but if those two are playing together, how much does the third guy really matter most of the time?

That said, I really question the choices when Tippett pulls the goalie. He sends out Yamamoto and Foegele, rather than Puljujarvi and Hyman. Also Yamamoto playing the replacement for Nuge on the powerplay. I think the big size and reach of Puljujarvi makes him more valuable out there, but then of course, I also think that I'd have flipped out Barrie by now on the PP to try to get it sparked.

Lots of issues tonight, and Skinner is going to take a lot of heat, but the whole team let down to start the third period. We were up, so it was like they thought it was game over already - didn't really force the play at all in the third, and then bang, bang and we're tied and then they're panicking.

The ridiculous thing is that we probably are going to get to a Tippett firing, just in time for a busy stretch of catch-up games. That won't put the team in a good position for success, but the management will be able to say they're doing something and REALLY trying.

I think it was on the Gaudette penalty where the Oilers' centre (Drai?) took the faceoff, skated off the ice and then Foegele came on. Both he and Yamamoto ended up running into each other and falling down in front of Murray because they both were playing the same wing. doh Go back to that combo for the EN, yup.

I don't believe there is a system in place, or a plan, or a strategy at either the ice, coaching or management level (since 1992!).

Ok so not buying the puck handling goalie is like an extra d. All 3 goalies have coughed up a significant amount of goals at the wrong time. Can you think of one time where their pick play won the game? Stay in the net.

While smith isn’t the issue he needs to go - how much to buy him out at year end.

Barrie and Keith also need to go it’s too much cap space gone for not enough return. We are leaking all over and need to be able to address gaps and no Holland isn’t the gm for that.

there was another play last night where Skinner came out to trap a dump in ring around.. hit his stick and bounced straight out 90 degrees to the front of the net.. luckily on that occasion there was an Oiler D-man there to collect the puck and clear it.. this was before the goal where he tried to pass it to Bouchard with a Sen in between them.. stupid play .. dopey play.

That play was the result of two dopes, Skinner and Bouchard.. Skinner for trying to pass it along the boards past a Sen player to Bouchard.. a high danger play.. and for Bouchard to place himself out of position to force a hopeless pass. Dopey x 2.

A smart team doesn't buy out a 40 year old goalie - they convince him that he's injured and he should take a seat on LTIR, or retire. There's just no compelling reason to take the cap penalty of another buyout there. If he's on LTIR, Smith's getting more money and hurting the team less. Only challenge is if he believes that he has another job waiting somewhere else if the Oilers were to release him.

I do think that when evaluating goalies, you do have to wonder about Dustin Schwartz. Hired only because he was a live body in the same building and knew something about goalies, I haven't seen a lot of great strides made by any of our netminders. I wouldn't keep him through the next coaching purge.

The only thing worse than wasting McDavid's career and being an embarrassment to the hockey world would be hurting someones feelings while trying to be better. It's buyout or nothin. Smith is too much of a warrior to ever quit.

Reason Smith has to go is so we can get a legit number 1 and have skinner backup. Skinner waiver eligible next year and I am worried we lose him for nothing.

The good news is that a few more games like last one, and the waiver worries just drift away!

No doubt about it. That game Saturday night was an absolute stinker from the Oilers. I'm going to look like a naive hick trying to draw some positives from that fiasco, but that never stopped me before.

The COVID thing is real, but every hockey team in the world has to deal with this. The KHL is postponing games as are the other leagues in Europe. My excuse here is that COVID has hit Alberta pretty hard, and even the Flames suck like the Oilers.

The schedule revisions have totally messed up the Oilers. The whole NHL schedule is topsy turvey and will remain so for the rest of the season. The old cliche is "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." I have to believe in the Oilers finding toughness and grit from different sources in the coming months. From grizzled veterans like Duncan Keith and Mike Smith ( I have little faith in Kris Russell, but hope he has one or two good game ahead of him) to young guys like Bouchard and Ryan McLeod, there are lots of opportunities for everyone to be a hero, either unsung or glorified. Some of those kids spinning their wheels in Bakersfield like Marody and Broberg could still have an impact on the season. Tyler Benson has been given plenty of opportunities; maybe he will someday take advantage of same or someone else will.

Goaltending is currently pretty shaky, and there is no wriggle room under the salary cap to bring in anyone expensive. Smith looks done due to injuries and age catching up to him, and Koskinen seems only effective in aback up role. Skinner isn't ready and the leap from the AHL to NHL may be a bridge to far for him. Desperate situation but I'm not going to give up hope. Always guys like
Evan Buitenhuis and Alex Stalock who come out of nowhere to sparkle in the nets,

The Oilers have Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, Darnell Nurse too. I don't believe any of them are going anywhere else or want to go anywhere else. Enough said.

From 99% of the posts here at OILFANS.COM, It looks like many are convinced the sky is falling, the sky is falling. Not me. No doubt most of the players and every coach needs a kick in the rear end.

Never surrender, boys. Never surrender.

Alright, I put the target on my own creaky back. Fire away, folks.

Good post Gabby, always good to hear from all perspectives.

Just a bit of push-back on this point though, I don't think Benson has been given much of a shot. He's dressed for 17 games, but he's averaging 8 minutes a game. Of those 17 games he's only had 4 where he's played more than 10min and 4 where he's played less than 6. He's played the fewest minutes of any Oilers forward that has played more than 1 game. Less than Turris, Shore, etc.

I'm not saying he's been awesome, but he's probably the best passer on the team outside of the big 3. Would make some sense to me to put him with someone that can shoot the puck and let them run for a bit.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

This would be my one nitpick too. Not only is Benson getting tiny minutes when he's in, but he's mostly had guys like Shore, Ryan and Turris with him when he is in. The one time he played with McLeod, they produced a goal, but we've never seen that combination again.

His leash is also so ridiculously short, that he's got to go out on the ice afraid to make a single mistake, because Tippett's shown again and again that he's happy to bench him for any reason.

Also - I have a bit of an issue with the way that the media covers offensive zone penalties. There's a desire to have better forechecking, and to have more sandpaper, but then wheenver a guy, especially a player that the team or media have crosshairs on, takes a penalty while forechecking, that's criticized roundly. I think you have to accept that it's a price of doing business if you want guys in hard. Sometimes they're going to get penalties, whether for the aggressive hit, or for reaching with their stick when they're close. This is even more of a pet peeve of mine given how inconsistent NHL reffing is. They can allow 10 hooks in a row, and then call an innocuous one - but if the recipient is one of a handful of players (Yamamoto and Benson being prime among them here) then they get roasted for that. When he ran over the one goalie - that was a dumb penalty and should be criticized, but many of Benson's minors have just been due to him being up on the play - and yet it's often the last time he sees the ice that game.

I'll note Sir Winston didn't say anything about fighting on the ice. The ice they can have.
