So, 17 games in to the season - just over 30% of the way done, our record is 9-8-0, with 60GF (1st in the NHL) and 58 GA (28th). 14th in goal differential at +2. It's not an easy year to compare entirely, because so many teams have played less games. We're in a 5-way tie for most games, while the Devils have only 9 games in the books so far, but I think it's still clear that we have a team that is strong offensively and suspect on defence/goaltending.

To make it easier to compare apples to apples, I decided to only look at the North Division, since no one else really matters this year.

The last Diff is special teams differential on penalties drawn vs. taken.

So the Oilers are 6th in the division for shots allowed, combined with 5th in the division in save percentage. Shot numbers don't always tell the whole story - Ottawa for example is the second highest shooting team, but they're shooting from everywhere Eakins-style and not getting rewarded for it. With the Oilers, I think it is accurate we've allowed too many chances, and our goalies are also under-performing.

On special teams, despite some struggles in the last week, the team is the second best powerplay (one of the reasons we're tied for second in GF/G), but the PK has been bad. Only Ottawa's is comparable in allowing so much. I suspect this is an area where we're leaking some of those shots, and it certainly is costing us. We've scored 15 PPG, but despite gettting half a powerplay a game more than our opponents, we've allowed 13 PPGA.

The PK was an area of strength for the team last year so I'm curious as to what's happened leading to the breakdowns this year. Have people dissected Tippett's system? Or is the goaltending just failing the team?

The team has also now had 6 games out of the 17 where they've allowed 5 or more goals with a 1-5 record in those games. They've had 9 games with save percentages below .900 going 2-7 in those nine. In the 8 games where they've had above .900 save percentage, they're 7-1 (only blemish was the 3-1 loss to Montreal). The team has lost FIVE times this year in games where they've scored 3 or more goals.

If we play our best 6 defenceman and get a goalie, I think we have a chance to win the division. Hopefully we can stay in the hunt long enough that Holland can make that happen.

It's clear we are one of the top 5 teams in the North. With luck, Covid takes several US teams completely out of the playoffs and we get in with a *

From there, we ride Mike Smith to a first round exit while setting records for both goals for and against in a series.

I'll disagree there. Ottawa is in the conversation for worst team in the league, and Vancouver has been pretty dreadful. They're 6th place, but included in their results are three routs of the miserable Senators (5-1, 7-1 and 4-1). Ottawa's been a punching bag for almost everyone but if you take out the +13 from those games, Vancouver's goal differential is -27 over 16 games. They look to be solidly mired in 6th place.

The bad news is that Calgary is the one exception to the rule on the Ottawa punching bag. The Flames have yet to have any games against the Senators, so their record is probably underestimating them, while the Oilers with 4 wins against the Senators is probably flattering to us.

Take away the Oilers 4 games against the dreadful Senators and they're... well, they're 1-1 against Vancouver and I don't think they looked great. We'll see if there's been improvement next week, but I'm not willing to state the Oilers are simply better right now.

I think you're right that the Oilers aren't as good as their record too...but still:

Without Ottawa
Vancouver 16GP 4-11-1 43GF 68GA -25
Edmonton 13GP 5-8-0 42GF 48GA -6

It may be a tallest midget thing, but the Oilers have outperformed the Canucks to this point by a fair margin.

And just because I'm curious:

Toronto 3 games vs. Ott - 1-2 (11-13) Ha ha ha ha!
13GP 10-2-1 47GF 31GA +16
Montreal 2 games vs. Ott - 1-1 (4-4)
13 GP 8-3-2 48GF 35GA +13
Winnipeg 5 games vs. Ott - 4-1 (20-10)
10GP 5-4-1 33GF 33GA +/-0
Calgary O games against Ottawa
15GP 8-6-1 44GF 40GA +4
Vancouver 3 games vs. Ott - 3-0 (14-3)
16GP 4-11-1 43GF 68GA -25
Edmonton 4 games vs Ott - 4-0 (19-10)
13GP 5-8-0 42GF 48GA -6

Based on this, Calgary actually looks to be ahead of Winnipeg and us. Bizarrely, four of Toronto's five losses are to the Senators and Oilers.

It’s too bad Calgary has a goalie that literally wins then games. If their skaters can figure it out, they should have home ice in the first round. Conversely, if the Oilers could get goaltending, they would be fighting Calgary and Montreal for home ice.

Who, exactly, are our 6 best defensemen? What metric do you use to achieve that outcome? Do you take into account the Tippett lefty/righty love?

For me;

Nurse-Barrie
Bouch-Bear
Lagesson-Larsson

I used the #MustyMetric to draw my conclusion on who to play as our top 6 (health pending).

There's going to be a lot of debate about this I'm guessing.

For me:

Nurse / Bear
Jones / Bouchard
Koekkoek / Barrie

I don't have Larsson or Russell in there, and probably rank Lagesson above them also. Like Tippet, I also value the RH/LH even distribution.

Agreed for the most part. I think Lagesson rivals Koekkoek and has higher upside. Larsson to me is also above Koekkoek, but the handedness is a bit of an issues - apparently none of the right shots have ever played much on their wrong wing (which makes sense - it's rare to have a group of six with more righties.)

If I could move Russell to free up cap space, I would do that immediately. I don't see any good reason to carry 9 defencemen on the roster and cap space could be really valuable to have for flexibility if a goalie does shake free.

I don't think that people should look at Bear, Jones and Lagesson as if they're too young to carry pairings too - it's a young man's league now and they've all been pros for years. We need them to step up.

I want to play too, but I'm not going by pairings...

Nurse (rising)
Barrie (rising)
Bear (falling due to injury but should bounce back)
Larsson (falling, but absolutely essential to the team still)
Lagesson (wild card)
Bouchard (rising rapidly)
Koekkoek (doesn't get to play as much as he deserves)
Russell (falling)
Jones (falling off the map, into an AHL abyss)

Positives +++++

Puljujarvi is found gold.. kid is still feeling out what the extent his abilities are, and how to command them consistently, he'll be a force, the Finnish Gronk! icon_nod

Bouchard is finding his form, top 4 in ability right now, soon to be running the PP, Howitzer of a shot, heavy, quick, and accurate, what we've been waiting for from a D-man for a couple of decades.

4th line of Ennis-Khiara-Archibald actually look capable.. and more dangerous in their end, than ours.. bonus πŸ‘πŸ»

Haaaaaas will eventually get healthy and we can have Khaira and Haaaaaas as our bottom 6 centers and PK'ers..

Kassian will be back to speed up the bottom 6

Lagesson has turned a corner and may turn out to be a real NHLer

And in the future ...

Eventually we could have top lines of;

Holloway (who needs Hall?), McDavid Puljujarvi

RNH Draisatl Y-moto

or..

Lavoie McDavid Puljujarvi

RNH Draisatl Y-moto

Ennis Holloway Archibald/Kassian

Holy negativity. Amazing. If I was a player I would run as far and fast away from hometown fans like this. We east coasters who root for the Oil are behind them 110 percent. Go Oil!

This is pretty awesome. A quick scan of your posting history (and by quick I mean the last 10-12 posts) shows all of them but one with a critical/negative comment.

Anyone else get the feeling this will be a last in the NHL standings type of year?

Floating to a second last place finish. Watch how when we play Ottawa we make them look world class.

Seriously? That is like standing on the top of the Titanic after it's cracked in half and saying there's still time, she might not sink. This team is as bad as it's been since Eakins. The playbook must be called act like the puck is a grenade.

It was a trick! To get you to post even MORE negative comments! :)

Mentally I have and been after a tough time - I have recently committed to focusing on positive thoughts. If not I end up become in overwhelmed and absorbed in negativity. Take care everyone - certainly seems like I have ran my time on this forum.

Wow, Kr55 is off of the recruiting team. πŸ˜‰

Sorry Clutchlikeeberle. Hope you come back. We are just a bunch fans with an armchair and an idea how to run the team. You, like the most recent of us have a better grasp on our team over our management group over the years.

Always room for positivity here. And some negativity. And everything in between.

Following this org is just a roller coaster ride (that usually ends in a major malfunction, but oh well) and we all handle it differently.
