I went with 4-1 Oil. Dubnyk will let in the first shot against but will stand on his head the rest of the game!

Ah, the first game of the season, where unbridled joy and optimism reigns.

5-0 Jets.

Then I'll just regress, because I feel I've made myself perfectly redundant.

March 29, 1996 was the last visit by the Winnipeg Jets for a regular-season game. The Oilers won 3-2.

No matter what I said before, now I get to be a fan again. The Oilers will make playoffs until they prove the goal unattainable. Hopefully I don't hit this realization before Christmas! rock

I am tepidly excited for this season, but the blue kool-aid is bitter this year.

This was all so very predictable.

Knowing how the Oilers love to lay an egg on home openers I attend, I'm predicting a 6-2 loss. Miserable first period.

Over the last few years haven't we won our home openers, but just barely and with seconds left?

Maybe I'm just bitter about last year. I went to the home opener against the Sharks. I believe it ended 6-2. It was 6-1 after the first period. Had some free beers that night as part of the "we're sorry for the lockout" program.

I like the looks of those top 2 lines better than what we saw in pre season but wonder why they weren't played like that for atleast 1 pre season game. The good thing about playing the Jets the 1st game is that they really don't have a stud top line that Hall has to match up against for his first reg season game as a Centre such as Sundin's/or say San Jose's top line.

THAT is a beautiful thing... I am worried Hall won't produce at the same rate with Smyth and Hemmer. Give Arcobello the veteran wingers, he needs them more than Hallsy.

So excited for this season. Gadzic and Brown will be running around like mad tonight. Should be a great game.

I'd still like a little help for Yakupov. I'd be fine with him or Hemsky switching sides to play on the same line, with Smyth down with Gordon and Joensuu. As it stands, I don't know that he has the support he needs to be successful offensively.

Who knows though...maybe Joensuu will surprise.

I have to say, that lineup looks paper thin. Fantastic first line and then after that, no line that I expect a lot of goals from. Smyth's old, Arcobello's green, Gordon's a defensive specialist, Joensuu's an unknown. The fourth line isn't likely to get a lot of ice time, and if they do, they won't get much for points.

We better be fantastic on the PP, because 5-on-5, that's not a playoff team.

Having a double threat combo makes all the difference, guy doesn't feel he has to carry the whole load in having to scrap all the other team's douche bags. Behavior science experiment coming up; I predict everyone gets a little more comfortable on the Oil, and the other team is a little less douch-like.

Can't wait till December. Friday the 13th game against the Canucks, Gagner and Kassian will both be back on their rosters for the first time.

Eakins should ice the following bottom six just for the lulz (and smackdown):
Eager-X-X
MacIntyre-Gazdic-Brown

I know that 4th line can't take a faceoff, but I wouldn't be sending that trio out to score a goal.

Dang. I'm really not a fan of spreading the talent as thin as possible. I'm sure it won't take long for Eakins to have no choice but to try stacking 2 lines though.

Jeez.

1 - can the skill players on this line overcome the ancient anchor, and deal with Hall's inexperience at center?
2- can the skill players overcome their inexperienced center?
3- can the skill player on this line overcome his offensively weak linemates, and can this line adequately check an opposing skill line?
4- holy crap. That's the worst line ever iced by the Oilers, and possibly, one of the worst lines ever iced.

The d looks not bad at least.

Yeah, the lineup as it stands looks closer to a bottom-five team than a playoff-bound one, eh? I know we've got a couple injuries, but it really only is a couple of injuries and this highlights the massive depth problems the team has. Remember when we all thought Ryan Smyth was going to be a fourth liner this year? The way this team has shaped up, it's not looking like he'll be out of the top-nine any time soon.

That said, Winnipeg sucks and we're going to beat the Jets tonight. It's the rest of the season that's going to be the problem.

Well on a positive.... IMHO the following are upgrades from last year; Perron, Gordon, Joensuu, Acton, Belov, While still probably a crap line up, when Nuge and Iron Jaw Gagner get back, we'll be decent, and an improvement from last year, although maybe still not playoff bound. Last years line up was just a freaking un-holy crap heap!
Go Oil!

I'm a torn man. Part of me dares to hope that this year may actually see the Oil qualify for the playoffs again. The other part is prepared for more disappointment after years of conditioning through watching them lose again and again. I don't think tonight's game is going to move me in one direction or the other, but I'm still going to watch, like a bystander at a car accident.

I am somewhat optimistic about our healthy lineup. But our top 2 Cs out, Smyth on the 1st line, Yakupov on the 3rd? I will be surprised if we manage to hang around .500 until both Nuge and Gagner are back.

Looking forward to the game, but not expecting much.

Finally the regular season has arrived.

Anxious to finally see Eakins run a game with his complete roster.

Should never look past a game or any NHL team, but am really thinking the Canucks on Saturday will give a glimpse of what Eakins / MacT have accomplished thus far.

Fixed that for you- it's not really complete until Gags and Nuge are both back in the line-up.
