Today's lone alumnus should be well known to you:

Fernando Pisani
Born: December 27, 1976 (turns 45 today) in Edmonton, AB.
Position: Right Wing (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Drafted 195th overall, June 22, 1996.
Oilers Career: 2002-03 to 2009-10; 402 games (30 playoff games).
Left Oilers: Signed as free agent by Chicago, August 18, 2010.

Pisani was an Edmonton native drafted as a late rounder by the Oilers in 1996. He had a long journey to the NHL playing 3 years in the AJHL, three years at Providence College and then two and a half years with Hamilton in the AHL before he finally made his NHL debut in 02-03. He would immediately become a regular fixture on the Oilers' third line, being known as a good penalty killer and providing reasonable offense. He is of course best known for his out of body experience in the 2006 playoffs when he was one of the driver's of the Oilers' cup run when he scored an amazing 14 goals in 24 games (he had 18 in 80 that regular season). He still holds the distinction of being the only player to score a shorthanded OT winner in the Stanley Cup Final. He managed to parlay that magical run into a lucrative four year deal with the Oilers, but after a decent 06-07, he would develop ulcerative colitis in 2008 which hampered his play and caused him to miss a lot of time on the remaining years of his contract, greatly reducing his effectiveness. When his contract was up in 2010 the Oilers' cut ties with Pisani and he would sign in Chicago. He spent one year with the Hawks, but chose to retire in 2011 when he determined his illness prevented him from playing anymore. He's been coaching in the Edmonton area since retiring where he's been an assistant at the UofA (until 2016) and since then has worked as development coach with the Oil Kings. Happy 45th Fernando.

The beat goes on with these two names:

Curtis Glencross
Born: December 28, 1982 (turns 39 today) in Kindersley, SK.
Position: Left Wing (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Traded by Columbus for Dick Tarnstrom, February 1, 2008.
Oilers Career: 2007-08; 26 games (0 playoff games).
Left Oilers: Signed as free agent by Calgary, July2, 2008.

Glencross was an undrafted forward out of the University of Alaska that managed to ink a contract with the Ducks in 2004. He would spend four years in the AHL before finally getting some NHL shots in 2007 with both the Ducks and Blue Jackets. In 2008 the Oilers acquired him and he would play 26 games down the stretch for them. He was part of a great third line with Kyle Brodziak and Zach Stortini, which helped the Oilers stretch drive that fell just short of climbing into a playoff spot. While he hoped to stay in Edmonton, the Oilers showed little interest in re-signing him, so he instead jumped down the highway and signed with Calgary. He would remain a Flame for almost seven years where he really came into his own having a career best 26 goals season in 11-12. The Flames would trade him late in the 14-15 season and he would finish the year with Washington before retiring in 2015. Since retiring he's remained in Calgary and become a partner in an engineering firm. Happy 39th Curtis.

Tomas Jurco
Born: December 28, 1992 (turns 29 today) in Kosice, Czechoslovakia.
Position: Right wing (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, July 1, 2019.
Oilers Career: 2019-20; 12 games (0 playoff games).
Left Oilers: Signed as free agent by Vegas, October 11, 2020.

Jurco was a Czech forward who came over to play in the QMJHL in 2009 when he was 17. He was a 2nd round pick by the Red Wings in 2011. He would spend 5 years in Detroit's system playing in both Detroit and Grand Rapids, but always having difficulty putting up points at the NHL level. It was a similar story as he went through Chicago's and Florida's systems over the next two years. The Oilers would sign him in 2019 (Holland must have still had a soft spot for him) and he spent just the one season (19-20) with the organization. He would play 12 games in Edmonton (just 2 assists) and only 8 with Bakersfield as injuries limited his season. That would be it for his Oiler time, as he signed with Vegas in 2020. After again splitting the 20-21 season between the NHL and AHL he signed in the KHL for the 21-22 season. where he continues his career. Happy 29th Tomas.

We've reached the end my friends. Here are the last two alumni to get recognized on their birthdays:

Tom Bladon
Born: December 29, 1952 (turns 69 today) in Edmonton, AB.
Position: Defenseman (shoots right).
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, July 10, 1980.
Oilers Career: 1980-81; 1 game (0 playoff games).
Left Oilers: Signed as free agent by Winnipeg, December 13, 1980.

Bladon was a skilled offensive d-man from Edmonton. He played his junior hockey with the Oil Kings and was drafted in the 2nd round by Philadelphia in 1972. He would spend six years with the Flyers, winning two Stanley Cups and setting a record in December 1977 when he became the first defenceman to get eight points in a game (he was also +10 in the game--another NHL record). After two years with the Penguins where his offense started to dry up, Bladon would sign with his hometown Oilers in 1980. He played just a single game with them (not sure what happened) before he would be released and sign with Winnipeg. He finished the season in Detroit and then retired in 1981. Bladon settled in Edmonton and worked for United Van Lines. In the 90s he moved to Victoria and got into the sporting goods business. Happy 69th Tom.

Derek Ryan
Born: December 29, 1986 (turns 35 today) in Spokane, Washington.
Position: Centre (shoots right).
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, July 28, 2021.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 26 games and counting (0 playoff games)

Ryan was a Spokane native who took a very long path to the NHL. He played three years in WHL, followed by four years at the University of Alberta. He would then spend four years playing in Europe before being signed by Carolina in 2015 and finally making his NHL debut in 2016 when he was 29. He's managed to stick in the NHL ever since, playing two more years with the Hurricanes followed by three with the Flames before he signed with the Oilers this past July. His results in Edmonton so far have been below expectations as he's had only 2 points in 26 games and sports a big minus rating, but hopefully he still has to time to get things turned around. Happy 35th Derek.

There are no birthdays to report on either December 30 or 31 so we've reached the end. Well, almost--there are eight current players (could be nine if Samorukov plays before the end of the year) who made their Oiler debuts in 2021 after their birthdays, and were thus not included yet in the thread. For the sake of completeness I will use these last two birthday free days of the year to include these eight players (four per day) and then we will have covered everybody.

What if Holland makes a trade tomorrow?

Amazing thread benv, truly appreciate the work you put into this. Brought up so many interesting memories and discussions. The depth of knowledge of the people on this forum is really incredible. So many things that I had forgotten about that you and others brought up. Thank-you!

As mentioned, no birthdays on December 30, so I instead I will complete my run through of the team's history by presenting the first four of the nine players who made their Oiler debuts in 2021 after their birthdays. I've also retroactively put each player in his appropriate birthday post.

Seth Griffith
Born: January 4 1993 (turned 28 this year) in Wallaceburg, ON.
Position: Centre (shoots right).
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, October 9, 2020.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 1 game and counting (0 playoff games).

Griffith was a late round pick by the Bruins out of London in 2012. An offensive centre in junior, he was able to continue that playing in the AHL, as he's moved through the Bruins, Leafs, Panthers, Sabres and Jets organizations, playing mostly in the AHL but getting in 79 NHL games over that seven year period. He became an Oiler when they signed him in 2020 and he's played his entire time so far in Bakersfield. He gets mentioned today for playing 12 days ago in Seattle when the Oilers were ravaged with Covid issues and had to raid the farm to ice a lineup. He looked fine in his one game, doing good board work leading to a goal (he was even given an assist that was later taken away). We will see if he has any kind of future as an Oiler.

Warren Foegele
Born: April 1, 1996 (turned 25 this year) in Markham, ON.
Position: Left Wing (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Traded by Carolina for Ethan Bear, July 28, 2021.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 30 games and counting (0 playoff games).

Foegele was a 3rd rounder by Carolina in 2014, coming out of St. Andrew's College. He turned pro in 2017 and after a full season in the AHL made his NHL debut in 2018. He spent three full seasons in Carolina, his best being 19-20 when he got 30 points in 63 games. The Oilers gave up Ethan Bear for him last July and he has since been a mainstay on the team playing all 30 games so far, and getting 11 points. His play has been better of late as he has been playing on the top line with McDavid; it will remain to be seen what he may yet contribute to the team.

Colton Sceviour
Born: April 20, 1989 (turned 32 this year) in Red Deer, AB.
Position: Right Wing (shoots right).
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, October 13, 2021.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 21 games and counting (0 playoff games).

Sceviour played his junior in Portland and was a fifth round pick by Dallas in 2007. He bided his time, putting up points in the AHL and would become an NHL regular with Dallas by 2015. He would not (so far) see the AHL again getting regular shifts with the Stars, Panthers, and Penguins while contributing in a depth role. Finding himself without a contract this past September he joined the Oilers on a PTO and would make the team. He's played in 21 out of 30 games so far this season. The points haven't really come (just 3) but he's contributed as a penalty killer and seems to have the trust of Tippet. Hope for more good things to come.

Brendan Perlini
Born: April 27, 1996 (turned 25 this year) in Guildford, England.
Position: Left Wing (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, August 7, 2021.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 16 games and counting (0 playoff games).

Perlini was born and raised in England to a hockey playing father before moving to Canada in 2007. He was a top prospect winger out of Niagra and was drafted 12th overall by the Coyotes in 2014. He looked pretty good in his first couple of seasons in Arizona, topping out at 30 points in 17-18. Things would go downhill from there. He was traded to Chicago (in the Dylan Strome deal) and after a poor season with the Hawks, spent 19-20 with Detroit (with an even poorer season of 4 points in 39 games). He would spend the 20-21 season playing in Switzerland and the Oilers signed him to a deal to start the 21-22 season. Perlini was a demon in the pre-season leading the league with 8 goals, but then went completely cold once the real games started. So far this year he's been healthy scratched as much as played, but there has been some recent spark that will give us some hope we may see pre-season Perlini again. Time will tell.

I will be back tomorrow with the last five players and we can call this a thread.

And here are the remaining five players who were missed through the course of this thread:

Markus Niemelainen
Born: June 8, 1998 (turned 23 this year) in Kuopio, Finland.
Position: Defenseman (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Drafted 63rd overall, June 25, 2016.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 7 games and counting (0 playoff games).

Niemelainen was an Oiler third rounder out of Finland in 2016. He played his junior hockey in Saginaw of the OHL, but returned to Finland to play three and a half years in the Finnish elite league before coming to North America in 2021. He has so far played 38 games in the AHL and some back end injuries this year saw him come in and play 7 games with the Oilers. He's looked good so far, and we will look forward to his 6 foot 6 frame manning the Oilers' blue line in the near future.

Zach Hyman
Born: June 9, 1992 (turned 29 this year) in Toronto, ON.
Position: Left Wing (shoots right).
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, July 28, 2021.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 27 games and counting (0 playoff games).

Hyman was drafted in the fifth round by Florida out of the OJHL. He would spend four full seasons with Michigan State, exploding for 54 points in 35 games in his final year in 14-15. He would be traded to the Leafs in 2015 and play most of 15-16 in the AHL, but established himself as an NHLer by 2016. He spent over five seasons in Toronto improving each year and became a top line sniper by 2018. He left Toronto to sign with the Oilers this past July and he's been excellent, getting 19 points (11 goals) in 27 games. We've got him signed for seven years, so here's hoping he continues to produce.

Dmitri Samorukov
Born: June 16, 1999 (turned 22 this year) in Volgograd, Russia.
Position: Defenseman (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Drafted 84th overall, June 24, 2017.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 1 game and counting (0 playoff games).

Samorukov was a Russian d-man who came over to play junior in the OHL (Guelph). The Oilers took him in the 3rd round in 2017 and he's been steadily improving in his development, playing in Bakersfield and one year in the KHL. His only reason for inclusion is of course fresh in our mind as he played his first game two days ago where he got walked around twice for goals early and then was benched for the rest of the game after only 2 and a half minutes of action (all after flying in his wife to watch his NHL debut). It's almost impossible to imagine a worse start to one's NHL career, but I hope Samorukov can recover and become a valuable Oiler someday (or at least a valuable trading chip).

Philip Broberg
Born: June 25, 2001 (turned 20 this year) in Orebro, Sweden.
Position: Defenseman (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Drafted 8th overall, June 21, 2019.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 8 games and counting (0 playoff games).

Broberg was a top prospect d-man out of Sweden, who was Ken Holland's first big move as GM when he drafted Broberg 8th overall in 2019. It's difficult to see from raw numbers why he was so coveted, but since coming over to North America this year he's gotten his legs and seems to be a steady presence. He's recently played his first 8 games in the NHL (making him the first and only so far Oiler to be born in the 21st century) and certainly held his own. I expect we will be getting a steady dose of Broberg over the next many years in Edmonton.

Duncan Keith
Born: July 16, 1983 (turned 38 this year) in Winnipeg, MB.
Position: Defenseman (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Traded by Chicago (with Tim Soderlund) for Caleb Jones and conditional 3rd round pick, July 12, 2021.
Oilers Career: 2021-22 to present; 21 games and counting (0 playoff games).

Keith was a 2nd round pick by the Hawks in 2002, drafted out of Michigan State University. He would spend two years in the AHL before graduating to the NHL in 2005. He immediately became one of Chicago's top blueliners, and soon after would be considered one of the best d-men in the league as he would spend a whopping 16 years with the Hawks playing nearly 1200 games. He was a shutdown guy early in his career, but started to produce points later, having his best season in 09-10 when he got 69 points. He was known for his ability to eat up big minutes and was instrumental in leading Chicago to three Stanley Cups. He came to Edmonton this past July in a trade that most did not like (mostly objecting to his cap hit). He's been steady if not exceptional in his 21 games with the team so far--at 38 years old we can only hope he can maintain what he's doing.

And with that we have now gone through every single player to suit up for the Oilers in their nearly 50 years of existence (at least I think so--if I've missed anyone please let me know). It's been fun doing this thread and I hope you got some enjoyment out of it.

I'll probably add a few more posts in the new year including some stats I've been compiling as I went as well as putting in an alphabetical index for reference (someone asked for this early in the thread).

Thanks for reading. Have a good new year everyone.

So I had heard that the earlier in the year a birthday is, it's an advantage for athletes, because they will be among the oldest among their cohorts (I guess you generally compete with those born in the same year as you). So here is the breakdown of how many of the 714 Oiler players were born in each month:

January: 82
February: 53
March: 71
April: 61
May: 63
June: 69
July: 53
August: 62
September: 50
October: 65
November: 39
December: 46

So we do see a bit of a decreasing trend there, particularly with nearly twice as many January birthdays than November/December birthdays. The (arguably) three most famous Oilers (Gretzky, Messier, and McDavid) are all January birthdays as well.

Could be some truth to the tale. Be interesting to see what the breakdown is in the entire NHL history (but I don't have that kind of time right now).

This is why I propose 12 separate National Hockey Leagues, separated by birth month. Bettman won't return my calls.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Fun fact: Rick Chartraw owns a campground at Kinbasket Lake, BC near Golden. We tried staying there this summer but it was locked up.

Lefties versus righties [message #798417 is a reply to message #771063 ]

One last analysis I wanted to do was the lefty/righty proportion. Here's the breakdown of all Oilers:

Goalies: 65 left, 5 right (7% righties)
Defensemen: 158 left, 67 right (30% righties)
Forwards: 277 left, 142 right (34% righties)
Skaters: 435 left; 209 right (32% righties)
All players: 500 left; 214 right (30% righties)

So in general only about 30% of players shot right, but much less for goalies who are overwhelmingly lefties when it comes to catching.

Someone earlier suggested that they would expect that the proportion of righties probably increased over time, so I took a look at the breakdown by decade of birth:

1930s*: 5 left, 3 right (38% righties)
1940s: 43 left, 23 right (35% righties)
1950s: 96 left, 37 right (28% righties)
1960s: 112 left, 40 right (26% righties)
1970s: 98 left, 41 right (29% righties)
1980s: 91 left, 39 right (30% righties)
1990s*: 55 left, 31 right (36% righties)

*One player born in the 1920s was included with the 1930s; one player born in the 2000s was included with the 90s.

So I would say the proportion has stayed pretty consistent throughout time, although we may be seeing a bit of an uptick in the latest generation.

Great question from a buddy of mine:

Who are the players in the Hockey Hall of Fame who played for the Edmonton Oilers but do NOT have their jerseys hung from the rafters at Rogers?

As usual, great job benv!

Nicely done. We had a big argument over Sather. He's in the HHOF but not as a player.

And his name is hung up, but not his number. Just the 5 Cup banner (which to be honest looks a little odd - better than the Rod Phillips one though!)

I suggest you guys read up on Norm Ullman. Guy was Wayne Gretzky in Edmonton 30 years before Wayne Gretzky. Just a incredible hockey player. Not too many even know who he was nowadays.

He moved to the Oilers same time as I moved to Edmonton and as a former Sittler-era Leafs fan I thought I would check out his new team. He legitimized the Oilers as a hockey team imho.

Good trivia question. Spoiler alert for some guesses below.

Is Pronger the only one? Looked up to see if Damphousse made it but shockingly he is not in the HHOF.

For those who may be interested, here's every Oiler player grouped by which province/state/country they were born in. Note that I used place of birth regardless of where they grew up. So for example Steve Smith is listed in the UK, Robert Nilsson in Alberta, and of course Puljujarvi in Sweden. It's up to date as of today.

The main number beside each province/state/country is the total number of man-games played by players born there, while within the brackets are the number of players and a listing of them all (in order of most to fewest games played). So for example there are 50 Oilers born in Saskatchewan and they have played a total of 4576 man-games. I counted regular season games only and included both NHL and WHA totals.

Lots of interesting data here. A couple of interesting takeaways I had: exactly 40% of all Oilers (286/718) were born in either Ontario or Alberta and there have been more Oilers born in Saskatchewan (50) than in Quebec (47). Also 2/3 have been born in Canada, and only 1/8 in the USA, leaving roughly 1/5 in Europe and elsewhere.

Enjoy!

I know no one is looking at this thread anymore, but my OCD requires me to keep it up to date; so here are the nine players and one coach that made their Oiler debuts in the year 2022:

Klim Kostin
Born May 5, 1999 in Penza, Russia.
Position: Left Wing (shoots left)
Acquired by Oilers: Traded by St. Louis for Dmitri Samorukov, October 9, 2022.

Evander Kane
Born: August 2, 1991 in Vancouver, BC.
Position: Left Wing (shoots left)
Acquired by Oilers: Signed as free agent, January 27, 2022.
Oiler Career: 2021-22 to present; 57 games and counting (15 playoff games).

Left Oilers: Signed as free agent by Ottawa, October 10, 2022.

Dylan Holloway
Born September 23, 2001 in Calgary, AB.
Position: Left Wing (shoots left).
Acquired by Oilers: Drafted 14th overall, October 6, 2020.
Oiler Career: 2021-22 to present; 34 games and counting (1 playoff game).

Ryan Murray
Born September 27, 1993 in Regina, SK.
Position: Defenseman (shoots left).

Oiler Career: 2022-23 to present: 24 games and counting (0 playoff games).

It's interesting to note that all nine players that made their debuts were left-handed shooters. Also interesting that it was only nine players--in most years it would be much higher.

Happy new year all.

Since I updated the new Oilers for 2022, I thought I would do a quick Oscar's style in memoriam tribute to those Oilers we lost in 2022 (and again to satisfy my OCD).

Fortunately, it's a short list of just three players:

Bryan Marchment: May 1, 1969 - July 6, 2022 (age 53)

https://media.gettyimages.com/id/876796442/photo/bryan-marchment-of-the-edmonton-oilers-skates-against-the-toronto-maple-leafs-during-nhl-game.jpg?s=612x612&w=gi&k=20&c=wmhjKOQSPfqgVQwpqBBdp0j7ztdPMjVpqQa9yCquaUo=

Ken Brown: December 19, 1948 - July 22, 2022 (age 73)

Dave Dryden: September 5, 1941 - October 4, 2022 (age 81)

Two more notable passings of Oiler "builders":

Ben Stelter (Oiler superfan): May 27, 2016 - August 9, 2022 (age 6)

Barry Fraser: (long time Oiler chief scout): February 10, 1940 - December 4, 2022 (age 82)

And finally one player who passed unnoticed by me in 2021 on his birthday (the same I day I made the post about him--I may have been the last person to post about him while he was alive):

Bobby Schmautz: March 28, 1945 - March 28, 2021

Damn, I should have used pictures in the original thread. Makes it much more classy and visual.

That picture of Ben hit me right in the feels. That look of wonder and amazement.

Thanks for all of this Benv. You deserve a Gretzky award (since there's no trophy named after him yet)

The in memoriam post this year is (happily) extremely short as we lost just one Oiler alumnus in 2023:

Petr Klima (age 58): December 23, 1964 - May 4, 2023
