We might as well have a thread for this, since it'll be a topic of conversation for a while. The Oilers have put Evander Kane on IR

#Oilers forward Evander Kane has been placed on LTIR & is expected to miss 3-4 months. Mattias Janmark & Klim Kostin have been recalled from the
@Condors. We wish Evander the best in his recovery process.

I assume that means there was tendon damage. That's too bad. The guys they called up are the ones I expected.

Welp. Use the LTIR and bring him back for game 1 of the playoffs.

Or do an Oilers thing and be afraid to use the LTIR because he might come back with 2 games left in the season, as if it's all completely out of our hands to control.

If it's 4 months, that puts him into March so I think after the deadline.

Give him 1 more month to recover and take part in full practices before game 1 and that means you can add that 5M of player for the season and playoffs. If you don't do that, can't really add anyone you want to be in the playoffs with you.

Just trying to use the Tampa Championship model.

This is exactly the conversation I just had. LTIR until Game #1 and fill the role, Tampa style.

Until Edmonton tries it. Then we get tagged for cap circumvention and have to give up a 2nd round pick as compensation.

This is all assuming that we can make the playoffs after losing one of our top forwards for 3-4 months. If I am Hollard I am looking for some help pretty quick before it doesn't matter anymore.

Crap. faint

There goes our swagger, and a sniper.

Not expected until trade deadline.. and then he has to get in game shape, and recover from injury.. this is a real setback.. our legit top 6 now drops from 5 to 4.

Do it.

Zero reason that a tendon injury can't take an extra month to be 100%. Kucherov was at 100% and participating in practice for a month before the 2021 season ended.

Adding a solid top 4 D would be a great help as well.

Pull a Tampa and Acquire Patty Kane, bring back Evander in the playoffs?[ 22 vote(s) ]
1.Yep! Do it Kenneth! cue Kane McD Kane for the playoffs! 14 / 64%
2.Nope.. that would contravene the spirit of the NHL rule book.. 1 / 5%
3.LOL!!! Do you ACTUALLY think that the NHL would allow Edmonton to receive an advantage as big as that? ..cue the NHL creating a new "Oiler Rule" regarding LTIR players and cap space in the playoffs. 7 / 32%

Seriously - it sucks for him and I hope he makes a 100% recovery, but from a purely selfish fan of the team perspective, this 3-4 month timeline is a perfect opportunity for us to Kucherov our roster. 4 months is mid March. Another month to get up to game speed, and BAM,

I do hope they go out and get someone, because the in house replacements simple won't do. Patrick Kane has been talked about since this summer - I think he makes us Cup favorites. Cost might be higher than it was at the start of the year with the Hawks hanging around the wild card spot, but I have to think they don't plan on being around there by the end of the year.

Other UFA options from teams out of it at the moment: Bo Horvat, Timo Meier, Tarasenko?

I really hope they go out and replace him, and hopefully get an upgrade on D while they are at it.

I hope the long term prognosis is a full recovery. But maybe the saving grace of the injury being his "bottom" hand if there is any nerve/tendon damage it should be mitigated. But really, hoping he's 100% at the end of the recovery.

I don't have any medical training or anything, but coincidentally I just had my pointer finger amputated last week. One thing I learnt during that process is how many tendons, nerves, arteries and veins in the wrist/hand, and how close proximity they all are. So it's nearly impossible to say how he will be after recovery with the very little information out there on his injury. The silvef lining would be how he was able to get medical treatment literally immediately, was at a hospital within 20 minutes, and was in a state with an extremely high number of great surgeons simply due to it's population. Had this happened in Ottawa for example, he's probably an hour away from the hospital, and 4 hours from Toronto, where there will be fewer great surgeons to work with.

My brother is a physio and he said if it's a tendon, healing time is usually 6-8 weeks then you need time to reload and strengthen the wrist again. So that's where the 3-4 months is from.

Well first off, hope you are okay and speedy recovery!

Secondly, yeah when I was doing martial arts training related to knives, we were taught to never expose the inside of your arm, only the backhand & outside forearm. Chances are you will be cut, so the important thing is to make sure it's not anything important.

Because the in side of your wrist below your palm is a tightly packed bundle of several vital bits. So when I saw what happened my concern was immediate because it looked like that's exactly where the skate blade went.

Again, hope you're okay!

Hope you're OK as well bigEfromGP!

JP and Yamo both have no excuses about opportunity now. Time to put up or shut up.

Yup. It's a now or never opportunity for them.

The OIL are now officially as soft as a wet noodle.

At least they proved that they can play team defense successfully... That PK effort was shocking as well. Let's see if that wasn't a "one of".

Carolina is beatable... let's do it.

Solution for the lines.

Nuge - McD- JP - You said you want to be a top 6. You said it's time to take a step at the start of the year. You are off to a slow start. Time to take your step. Here is your chance JP!

Holloway - Leon - Hyman - Time to give Holloway some rope and let him play. You have 2 reasonably responsible vets with him. He's big, skates well, some physical edge, can shoot well. Not as nasty as Kane but doesn't shy away. Hard to do much in 6 mins.

Foegele - McLeod - Yamo - I hear these 3 are buddies off the ice and always hang out. Leave them together for now and see if they can get some chemistry. You can always swap JP for Yamo if JP can't find traction and Yamo gets going.

Janmark - Ryan and one of Shore/Kostin.

Well Holloway will definitely get more playing time so that’s a plus.

Best of luck with recovery!

"4 months" is bollocks. I'd be surprised if he's back this season at all with the extend of the injury. 4 months would be back to an office job, but still not 100%. Return to intense contact professional sports is a whole other animal.

I totally think we should pull a Tampa LOL

And then laugh hysterically when the NHL closes the loophole because we used it once, as opposed to Tampa for 3/4 years in a row.

Kane interview in the second intermission. Artery, tendons, nerves cut. Successful surgery. At the very least, he was always able to move his fingers. Sounds just horrific.

Besides stick handling, shooting, he'll probably be more tentative about punching a Flame in the face now.. which is a bit of a bummer.
