So, after hiring basically the same coach 3 times in a row (after a guy that got 2 months, a total self obsessed goof, and a guy that never really got a shot), we finally hired someone different. Media was convinced changing coaches again won't make a difference. We changed so many already, how can it not just be the players? And maybe after we turn the lineup over 3 more times we could take a serious look at management...maybe.

It appears something dramatically changed with our coaching change though, crazy. Finally got away from old school guys all telling our players to go into a shell with any lead. Got a coach actually interested in trying to get more out of the lineup than a loaded top line. No longer making all the depth play like their only job was to kill time so McDrai could catch their breath.

posted these stats earlier, but was still skeptical that maybe it's a new coach bump. I think we can say the play of this team really has changed, throughout the lineup. The PP needs some improvement, but we finally have a team winning the 5v5 battle, and even more a team willing to keep pressing with a lead. Can go into a playoffs with a little more confidence that maybe we can win games without the refs turning them into a special teams battle.

Tippett 19/20 with a lead 5v5 - 17:15 mins/game (7th):
CF - 43.65% (21st)
GF - 44.66% (25th)
xGF - 45.11% (24th) (expected goals for)
HDCF - 47.11% (18th) (high danger chances for)

Tippett 20/21 with a lead 5v5 - 18:34 mins/game (6th):
CF - 43.71% (23rd)
GF - 50.63% (18th)
xGF - 47.69% (16th)
HDCF - 47.74% (19th)

Tippett first 45 games 5v5 with a lead - 13:32 mins/game (23rd):
CF - 46.73% (15th)
GF - 42.11% (24th)
xGF - 47.71% (19th)
HDCF - 46.38% (22nd)

Steelcroft 35 games while leading 5v5 - 20:56 mins/game (2nd):
CF - 51.27% (5th)
GF - 53.73% (8th)
xGF - 54.65% (4th)
HDCF - 58.13% (1st)

Sometimes it is the coach(es).

For completeness, the other coaches. Mainly compared to Tippett though because the team changed a lot. Also McLellan had the benefit of the absolute best years of McDavid by analytics when he was tireless, pushing the pace every second of his ice time. McDavid's game has mellowed a bit in the last years.

McLellan 2015/16 5v5 with a lead - 10:18 mins/game (30th)
CF - 42.08% (24th)
GF - 37.97% (29th)
xGF - 41.43% (27th)
HDCF - 38.75% (30th)

McLellan 2016/17 5v5 with a lead - 14:37 mins/game (18th)
CF - 44.56% (18th)
GF - 55.56% (6th)
xGF - 48.06% (12th)
HDCF - 50.31% (8th)

McLellan 2017/18 5v5 with a lead - 12:49 mins/game (26th)
CF - 46.12% (10th)
GF - 44.83% (25th)
xGF - 49.92% (7th)
HDCF - 48.17% (12th)

McLellan 2018/19 (first 21 games) 5v5 with a lead - 11:54 mins/game (25th)
CF - 43.63% (4th)
GF - 42.86% (22nd)
xGF - 48.52% (8th)
HDCF - 55.10% (3rd)

Hitchcock 2018/19 (last 62 games) 5v5 with a lead - 15:19 mins/game (17th)
CF - 41.90% (25th)
GF - 53.73% (10th)
xGF - 43.36% (25th)
HDCF - 42.78% (27th)

Great post. Got me to head over to natural state trick. A bit worrying to see LA ahead of us in more that a few 5v5 categories you listed in the last 25games, but it's good to see 200ft improvement from Woody's influence.

Todd is living the dream again in LA with some reliable old vets to lean heavy on. Not sure what it was about coaching us vs SJ/LA. Temptation to over rely on 2 guys might be too much when you have McDrai for some coaches. Could also give Todd a bit more of a pass than Tippett, our lineup was weaker when he was here aside from 1 season, 16/17. Todd's tendency to try to bottle up with leads though, we know that all too well, and we also burned his team doing that this season. His good analytics in LA also doesn't seem to translate to scoring, not sure if he's learned some of Eakins' tricks.

Should be a good series. I hope we can still depend on Todd being outcoached like he has been every playoffs. It being done by Woodcroft would be a treat to watch.
