This has to be it for Smith. Right? Surely they’re not going to keep trotting him out there this year are they?

No. You can't fake an injury, they won't demote him. He'll be here for the rest of this year and next year unless he gets a real injury or he retires. They may get a new starter in the summer, but he'll be the backup minimum.

Everyone else in the league fakes injuries. Do you really believe that Seabrook is completely broken? That Marian Hossa is allergic to hockey equipment? That Joffrey Lupul was so unhealthy he couldn't play for the Leafs? The list goes on and on. Everyone cheats that rule, because it's pretty easy to fake.

Not to mention, the roster limit expands by a couple after the trade deadline. We don't even need Smith hurt to bring up Skinner (although we're tight to the cap, which makes it tougher.)

I hope that was Mike Smith's last career start...although I said that the last time too.

Principe: You've switched goalies before.
MacT: Once even for a shootout.
Principe: I remember, Conklin smashing his stick.
MacT: But it worked.

HEY CRAIG, YOU LOST THAT GAME, ALIENATED YOUR GOALIE AND MADE EVERYONE REALIZE EVEN MORE THAT YOU WERE A HORRIBLE COACH.

He actually thinks he was successful pulling that move, when it was mocked around the hockey world, including by Conklin - the goalie who got pulled.

crazy

In fairness to him they did make the cup finals 3 months later.

He and coaches like Billy Moores weren't bad playoff strategists. But they got into the playoffs in 8th place when the Canucks choked. Granted the Oilers had Roloson healthy by that point and played slightly over .500 hockey down the stretch. Once Game 7 was over, we didn't see playoffs again for a decade. Blame directed.

This is great. I remember that loss. Embarrassing. The reality distortion field in full effect. I assume the entire front office thinks like that.

I'm looking forward to hearing Louie and Jack now falling all over themselves about the next stop from Smith, no matter how routine. Gotta protect your starter!
