I don't think they need to win it as much as just show up at the drop of the puck and play solid hockey. I'm more so looking for that, a change in the way they play.

Maybe the Isles leave Varlamov here when they leave?

Me too. I was pretty stunned after they got shut out by Vegas on home ice, they came out so flat in the first period. That needs to stop.

Maybe the new coach will light a fire under them to come out firing from puck drop. I hope so.

I can't see Woody lighting many fires, not his style.. he's a mellow dude.. which unfotunately is like the majority of the team.

This might not be a group well suited to a fire breather. Some guys need an ass chewing, some guys need a direction they believe in.

True. But you generally need a coach that can do both.. as required.. I don't really see Woody as fire breather. :) I think what may save Woody is that he has Manson with him, who might be more able to be a hard ass. I feel the worst thing for the Oilers has been in the D-zone, hopefully Manson contributes there.

Your point that the team is not suited for a fire breather may be part of the problem, and a culmination of Holland's errors.

Yeah, there's definitely a lack of spark plugs on the team. As Struddy used to say, you need the right mix. And right now it feels like we have too many players that are focused on obediently trying to follow the Xs and Os, not enough players that are just hungry to go out and do something to put the other team on its heels. Without the second part, you become predictable and easy to play against.

I am more curious about the lines today than I have been in a while. There will be changes due to injuries but I wonder if we will see different combinations and even guys that have been scratched for a while get in.

Will be most interested in how ice time is handled. Ryan on NUge's wing is interesting. Nice to see JP up. I would not doubt that Steelcroft will try pushing Benson after years of relying on him. It's do or die time for him.

I am curious with ice time as well. The 4th liners under Tippett unless they killed penalties didn't get a ton of ice time. So we will see if they get a few more mins.

I do like the 3 centers. I think they need to keep it no matter what.

If Benson can't get traction under Woody, he never will.

The defense with out Keith is scary to me. Lagesson doesn't do anything for me. I wonder if we will see Broberg soon. I think he came off covid not that long ago so I wonder if that played a part in not putting him in. I do like them playing Niem. He has a dimension the team severely lacks in my opinion.

Your best centers need to be playing center. I'm hoping 'loading up' becomes a rare event.

Probably one of the easiest things to address is pick support when possession is achieved in the D zone, that's gone away. Mind you when you're down early in games you're pushing for offense game after game, so that's probably at the root of it. It remains that the forward group has to present outlets to the D when trying to exit the D zone. Pretty basic hockey.

I want to see a bottom 6 that's usable enough to take 5v5 time and some overall minutes off the hands of the top players. LD would benefit tremendously if he had something left late in games. We've seen Connor, Leon and Nurse more than once out for brutally long shifts just prior to OT for God's sake under Tippett, and that's not just trying to tie the game. Senseless, and LD goes into stiff legged slow mode in OT. I'm hoping we see an improvement on deployment under the new coach.

Ya, I think this is getting pretty close to optimizing the forward group, although I'd be happy to never see Shore suit up again.

But that D group is bad. Going to be tough to overcome that in the long run.

Small points for Barrie not being on the top pair? :)

That left side though. Danger zone! Maybe Woody/Hunter can at least tell them to try protecting our blue line a little bit though.

If you hadn't been watching the Oilers the last couple or more years, you might think he'd be missed. He won't be, hopefully he does his frigging job when he's back.

We begin to see the error in Tippett's strategy of always playing from behind. The game has changed since he was in the league I suppose.

In the after practice media session I noticed after McDavid and Nurse were done talking, Connor asked to talk to Spector privately. Wonder what that was about…Spec asked if he would be okay playing less minutes on the PP.

Interesting nonetheless.

In the after practice media session I noticed after McDavid and Nurse were done talking, Connor asked to talk to Spector privately. Wonder what that was about…Spec asked if he would be okay playing less minutes on the PP.

Interesting nonetheless.

Spec’s article yesterday essentially blamed McDrai for the teams woes and he had something to the effect of Connor can’t carry Crosby’s equipment bag defensively.

Here’s the snips;
Connor McDavid uses his surreal speed to fly the zone and scorer highlight-reel goals, but not often enough to prevent chances in his own zone. He’s great with the puck, but without it McDavid -- who has spoken of his need to defend better, and has made strides -- still couldn’t carry Sid Crosby’s equipment bag.

He could, if he wanted to. If McDavid ever wants to win, he’d better learn to want to.

Leon Draisaitl could be the best all-around player on this team. Quite possibly the facto captain. But when a team has wild swings like the Oilers have had -- win six, lose seven, lose six, win four -- it appears rudderless.

We’re not in the room, so we don’t know for sure. But when a team is this streaky, we believe the top players (like Draisaitl) should be able to stabilize the effort. To achieve buy-in. To bring players like Jesse Puljujarvi -- who has been entirely lost for two months -- back into the fold.

The passengers: Kailer Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, Barrie, Zack Kassian. Deadweight here for new coach Jay Woodcroft to figure out. Useful players who have absolutely forgotten how to help this team, and its former coach, win

Saw someone calling out Spec for an article last year comparing Barrie to Coffey. Now he can't bash Barrie enough. Same player, just less McDrai time. But I don't expect much more from Spec.

Absolutely brutal. You could tell though that the Oilers media loved Tippett (who fed them) and were quick to try to defend him.

I don't agree with everything Spec says but I do think all the players, McD included need to be better especially an emphasis on some of the smaller, finer details. The league is so tight, just takes 1 or 2 small things to lose.

I was honestly shocked the next day Tippett stepped in front of a mic after the whole “pissy” Matheson saga, that there was no acknowledgement at all. I would have vehemently defended my player right away, spoke about how he’s a big leader in our group and his impacts can’t be understated. That would have been a great time to have his players backs.

Paul Maurice went to bat when the media had bad things to say about his best players. He said this about Blake Wheeler last season.

Quote:

"The goal that you're beaking him on (Tuesday) night, he got put in a real tough spot by a (expletive) backcheck by somebody else," Maurice said, according to TSN. "I'm sensitive to it because I've been in awe of this guy since I got here.

"His worth (ethic), like he's unimpeachable, and his character. How he runs that room and how he plays. He's got 11 points in 10 games."

He continued: "So, I'm not so much protective of Blake Wheeler; I'm more protective of the Winnipeg Jets. You get a guy in your town that plays that hard and is such a fine, fine leader, and a fine man? Let's be real careful.

"If his plus-minus number isn't what you want - like he's prorated out at about 88 points, man. And we're 10 games in, we're 6-3-1, and you're beaking my captain. I'm offended by it."

Maurice is not the greatest coach but that was the right thing to do. Dave had a real chance to back his leading scorer, instead it was business as usual with the media.

What did you want Tippett to do? Leon is a grown ass man. Did you expect Tippett to get in Matheson's face and tear a strip off him like he was picking on a kid?

I didn't agree with what Matheson did, he sounded like a grumpy old man and it sounded like Leon had answered similar before. If Tippett gets in his face, it just stirs the pot and blows the story more out of proportion than it already.

Read my post edit, that’s what I would have liked for him to do.

Tippett is now unemployed, maybe he should have done things differently.

Shore not in warmup. Sounds as though broberg will be in and they go 7D tonight.

Fwiw;
Condors played 11&7 about 85% of the time last two seasons.
