A 3am start for this one, but at least it's on TV again. Pretty much repeat what we did on Sunday, but don't let them score as many. I'm guessing that we'll have a fully rested Koski back so that may help keep the score down.

Got a bad gut feeling about this one - hope to see Bouchard out there tonight.

The nice thing about the last game is there was more than enough issues defensively that the Oilers I don't think can be overly cocky. Yeah you scored 8 goals but you gave up 5 and most of the 5 goals you gave up you can't pin on Skinner. Tkachuk, Batherson and Stutzel got goals from premium goal scoring spots who should be scoring from there because that's what their job is.

Here we go! Bouchard finally getting a shot. I hope it goes well. I can't see him being any worse defensively than Larsson has been.

Now some twitter speculation that Neal is being scratched and that the Oilers will dress 7 defencemen...which probably means a very light night for Evan Bouchard if that happens.

Which then means Chiasson likely gets majority of pp time, when he should be getting popcorn duty in the PB.

Any time a player scores two goals you should sit him next time out. It's called load management and it's very effective.

Per Tippett, “Looking at different aspects of the game, power play, penalty kill, just the way the adjustment went with 7 D, someone’s gotta come out, he’s (Neal) coming out.”

He also says Chiasson had a strong game last game. faint

Neal gets back into the lineup and the team starts playing better, actually working harder. Almost as though he’s the veteran voice the group needs. Then it’s okay James, thanks for he positives but you can go eat popcorn. Dumb. Aspects of the game, Neal miles ahead of Chiasson. Pk, neither do it. That Neal-Turris-Kass line had been decent, despite Turris’ shortcomings.

I don’t get this.

I don’t haaaaaate Chiasson, the person. Do I enjoy what he brings to the team? No. He’s a right shot James Neal minus the leadership, shot and amazing smile. I will not let you persuade me otherwise.

No one is taking on that contract. He’s a great fit on the powerplay in that down low role and someone who can give you decent bottom 6 minutes and chip in with the occasional goal because of the shot he possesses.

that was a sarcastic post. nobody's taking Neal's full contract. It would be possible if we kept 50%... but still a coin toss at that.

He contributes more than we see on the ice, me thinks.

The powerplay has seemingly been ‘fixed’ while the team seems to actually be awake during games since his return.

But let’s put Chiasson in over him.

I don't believe the powerplay was ever broken. I think there were a few factors:

1) New point person, who shoots the opposite way from the guy they've been used to (or his backup for that matter).
2) Rust - they hadn't played in months and had no pre-season.
3) Luck - despite points 1 & 2, they were getting their chances early in the year, but just not scoring. At some point that was always going to turn around and they were going to start scoring. The talent that they're able to ice on the powerplay is too good to be denied.

I don't think Neal turned it around, although he might have scored a couple of goals that Chiasson whiffed on earlier in the year - but that's pretty revisionist. It's hard to look at individual plays and sub in a player who wasn't there. Neal and Chiasson just aren't what makes the powerplay pop for the Oilers, so I think we shouldn't read too much in to which of them is out there as the catalyst for success.

Might the Oil use this opportunity to win a *third* consecutive game to get back to that elusive .500 mark this season? Dare we to dream....?

So I am guessing on of McD or Leon will double shift. A bit surprised Neal is out after 2 goals.

Yeah, Tippett's decision making this year is confusing at best. Why scratch the guy who just potted a pair? He wasn't on for a lot against last game either. It's a little bizarre. His two goals tie him for 5th on the team in goal scoring, so it's not like we've got a lot of other hot hands who need to be in the lineup...

He talked a lot based on the clips played on Stauffer's show that the decisions were based on getting Bouchard in and mentioned situations like the PK. I wonder if part of the whole 7 dmen is a combination of a lot of things but part of slowly getting rid of Larsson. They bring in Koekkoek and Russell for the PK. Seems complicated but if Bouchard shows well and when Bear comes back I bet for Calgary, that means 2 guys will ultimately be out if they go to a traditional 6 dmen.

BUT NEAL NOR CHIASSON PK!

The entire bottom 5 tonight are right shots. And you have lefty sniper Neal sitting upstairs eating popcorn. Chiasson over Neal on the PP is a loss. Chiasson over Neal 5v5, some could say a wash but it’s not, Neal is can score, it’s a loss. Chiasson over Neal for Pk, they both are David Staples’d to then bench so it’s a wash.

Bringing in Bouch is awesome. Finally. Way over due. But, sitting Neal over Chiasson for PK reasons? Cmon. No one is buying this crap.

Not sure where I mentioned Neal over Chiasson for PK reasons. Point that out to me please? I was talking solely about the 7 dman. I didn't even mention Neal or Chiasson's name in that particular post.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on that player. I haven't counted them up but you have mentioned your distain for Chiasson in the last 24 hours, easily, 10 times? I get it, you don't like Chiasson.

Anyone else concerned that the coach still wants training wheels on Evan Bouchard? To me, it speaks to one of two problems:

1) A coach who's too gun shy to play young players, and who will push veterans in front of them to the team's detriment; or
2) A player who's not living up to his draft potential and who's likely to be somewhat limited in what he can do as an NHL player.

Consider - there were 8 defencemen picked in the first 22 picks of the 2018 NHL Entry draft. Of those, six of them (Dahlin, Hughes, Boqvist, Dobson, Smith, and Miller are all every day roster players this season. Ryan Merkley, picked 11 choices after Bouchard is the only other one not to play in the NHL yet, but he is 10 months younger than Bouchard and hasn't had an opportunity to play any pro hockey yet, compared to Bouchard's full season in the AHL.

I think Bouchard's numbers suggest that there is a player there so I'm curious why the coach is so reluctant to play him. Is his skating so bad that they fear he can't keep up?

There's a lot of questions here, and almost any way you cut it, it's a cause for concern.

I can't say I disagree with you at all. I think there is a player in Bouchard. His puck moving alone is something the Oilers need. Tippett seemed OK last year to put Bear in and play him a ton. I wonder if the struggles of Jones who I admit I thought he would come in like Bear did and not be spectacular just solid, but he's been extremely shaky plus just how freaking bad a guy who you'd think would be reliable in Larsson, makes him gun shy to put in Bouchard who's calling card isn't defense. Hard to say.

I appreciate the slow play with Bouchard to let him take his time developing but in my opinion, it's time to see what you got. I don't see how Bouchard could be much worse defensively that Larsson has been and you might get an actual positive play out of Bouchard.

I don't think Jones has been bad at all since coming back in to the lineup. Shaky in the first few games for sure, but I think he's been relatively good since then, and that even Larsson has been a bit better playing with him (other than the ridiculously bad play on the Tkachuk goal the other night when he just slid himself out of the way).

It is odd that we were willing to throw in an ECHL-calibre goaltender against Ottawa, but against the same team, we're less inclined to give a regular shift to a young defenceman who we spent a high first round pick on, and who was stellar for our pathetic AHL team last year.

I'd like to see Jones with a different partner. Larsson is supposed to be the security blanket for a young dman but he's been the opposite. I have to think Larsson's erratic play has to impact Jones.

This is a little off topic for the game tonight but unless Larsson is able to find his game big time, for me at least he's making the decision on if you consider bringing him back or not pretty easy. 1/5 of the season is gone and looks like it's his last as an Oiler in my opinion. He looks lost and overmatched a lot of nights and some of his decision making I find shocking and not something I would expect from a dman of his experience.

No one wants to give Tip the benefit of the doubt that Bouch just had a back issue? :)

Gonna be very interesting to see what happens if Bouch makes a couple mistakes. This is as good as an opponent you could hope for to let a rookie get his feet wet. #FreeBouch

Maybe he was just too far down our depth chart. Everyone knows our right side is dominant. It's our left side that gets taken advantage of.

Maybe Tippett wants an extremely motivated Neal to play against Calgary so he can pump in a couple of goals against them? I don't remember him scoring a goal against the Flames last year, maybe I am wrong. If you feel the need to have 7 dman, then go for it I guess but I wouldn't have taken out a guy who scored 2 goals in Neal over Chiasson who while Chiasson I thought played good, Neal still had 2 goals.

Why is this an 8PM start for a regional game against an eastern timezone opponent? Makes no sense.
