So if we lose to CHI in the play in we have a 12.5% chance of selecting Lafreniere 1st overall icon_nod

I'm torn...what's better winning the play in and a possibly round or 2 after that or adding another weapon to the arsenal and getting Lafreniere finally having someone elite to play with McDavid and running a 2nd line of RNH-Drai-Yamamoto that shown some real chemistry.

At the end of the day if you're not going to win the cup it's always best to set up better for the future and while I think this tea could win a few rounds I don't view them as legit cup contenders at this point.

Also how do they decide which team is placeholder A,B,C,D etc? Does it matter if they all have equal odds? Probably just random I guess

They all have the same odds (1/8 or 12.5%)

Funny enough, the year we got McDavid, we only had an 11.5% chance of getting him...

Early rumour is that "Team #12" won the lottery.

To be clear, this lottery had the same odds as previous years. This wasn't rigged for or against anyone. Any other year it would just be a surprise jump to #1. Brian Burke losing his mind at the result is kind of bewildering.

I think what Burke must be complaining about is that normally the chance of getting the #1 would be restricted to teams that finished at the bottom, between 31 and 17 (15 teams), with this NHL revised lotto, the #1 had a chance to go to a team between 9 to 31 (23 teams), and now the unlikely event happened, a team rated between 9 and 24 has a chance to get the #1 .. hilarious.. oh what tangled webs we weave..

Well at least now if the Oilers get stiffed by the NHL somehow in their series vs Chicago .. ie refs, NHL replay "reviews" .. in addition to not getting a bye in the first place.. its a certified guarantee we'll get Lafrenierre .. Karma is a beach Mr. Bettman! :) wave

The only team that had a significant point lead on the first non-playoff team was Pittsburgh (and kinda-sorta Edmonton). All others could have easily had a bad run and put themselves out of the playoffs. You can't eliminate teams that were 3-5 points into a playoff spot with 12 games left from the lottery. Just too close.

The playoff format was really only unfair to the Pens and only extremely benefitted Montreal and Chicago.

The NHL did a really good job making both the playoff format and lottery format fair.

Technically, if Canes and Leafs both lost first round, Canes win #1 overall, and leafs pick is 9 or 10, the Rangers could win the Cup and draft #1 overall.

Team E, with a 2.5 per cent chance of winning No. 1 overall, won the big prize. That’s the 12th seed in lottery percentages

This is really gonna soften the blow when we are up 5-3 in game 5 and Kane gets two goals plus the winner in OT.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

If the return to play is an epic failure and cancelled, they will still do an even chance lottery with the current standings 8-15 teams by points %:

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
This is only if there is no 19-20 return to play. The eight teams that would go into Phase 2 of the lottery, with equal 12.5% chance to win, would be: 8. MTL (.500), 9. CHI (.514), 10. ARI (.529), 11. MIN (.558), 12. WPG (.563), 13. NYR (.564), 14. FLA (.565), 15. CBJ (.579).

Jet's fans could forever claim they were robbed if they lose that.

A pick around #12 winning a lottery pick is actually not uncommon in recent years.

2020 - #12 wins 1st Overall pick
2019 - #12 Chicago moves up to #3 to select Kirby Dach
2018 - #11 Carolina moves up to #2 to select Andrei Svechnikov
2017 - #13 Philadelphia moves up to #2 to select Nolan Patrick
2016 - All 3 top picks came from top(bottom) six teams

The league evened out the odds and increased the lottery to the first 3 picks starting in the 2016 draft. I actually like the new system, where high picks aren't just given to bottom 6 or 7 teams.

I like it too. I don't like to see teams rewarded for tanking, and I saw no evidence that the Detroit Red Wings organization was hoping for anything but last place and the best lottery odds this year. It's nice to see them get the 4th pick for their efforts. Not quite as sweet as Tim Murray's tears over the McDavid lottery he tanked so hard to lose, but it's up there!

Looking forward to next Monday, August 10'

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/phase-2-2020-nhl-draft-l ottery-held-monday/

"The eight teams that are eliminated from the Stanley Cup qualifiers will be eligible for the top prize, with all participants having the same odds (12.5 per cent) represented by one ball in the league’s lottery machine.

The seven teams not selected in Phase 2 will be assigned draft slots nine through 15 in inverse order based on their points percentages at the time of the NHL’s pause in the regular season due to the COVID-19 pandemic."

Will the Oilers be one of the eight teams eligible? Stay tuned.

My money is on the Penguins.

I would hate that. The only team I less want to win is the Jets.

Oilers winning would be great and all.

Oilers, Leafs or Pens would be hilarious to varying degrees of outrage from the general fan community.

FLA, NYR and NASH would be fine by me. All teams I have no feelings for one way or another.

Screw the Jets and the Wild
