At the start of this season I had hoped the Oilers would be legitimately in the hunt for a playoff spot and if things went well, they could squeak in. So far they have lived up to my hopes and assuming they keep doing what they are doing, look like they should make it in and actually be in the top 3 of their division. They should get Yamo back maybe even today. I read Klef is going on the road trip and sounds like Klef will be back probably on the trip. I read that Neal is potentially going on the trip and could be getting close.

With a healthy line up, this team could be a tough out for any team they face.

There are two big challenges facing the Oilers as we head down the stretch and in to the playoffs:

1) Goaltending - Yes, Smith's record is great lately, but much of that is run support, not actual great goaltending. The Oilers team save percentage is .903 right now - good for a tie for 15th in the league. There's only a couple of teams in playoff spots with worse numbers than the Oilers. That's a major issue. Goaltending decides playoff series.

2) PP vs 5v5 play - the Oilers are riding the league's best powerplay and that's done wonders. They score on just under 30% of their opportunities. They also have the second best PK in the league so the differential between PPGF and PPGA is massive - 27 goals. All that is really positive, but as we know the referees swallow their whistles in the playoffs. Given the success that Carlyle had a couple years back complaining that the Oilers got too many because the league favours McDavid, we can expect something similar again this year - even though we all know that's terribly untrue.

The Oilers at 5v5 are not a particularly strong team. Most of the team sports minuses and the team's been outshot this year by 123 shots - good for 24th best in the league. You couple that with mediocre goaltending and it's a recipe for disaster.

The team needs the new wingers to click with McDavid fast, and they need the Draisaitl/Nugent-Hopkins/Yamamoto line to keep firing at evens. We'll need improved goaltending too.

We won't be favourites in the playoffs with those numbers, although it's hard to write off any team with the top two forwards in the league...

I will be curious to see if the Oilers 5 on 5 play will improve once they are healthy.

To start the season the Oilers had I would say 3 legit top 6 players. McD, Leon, Nuge. They had Neal and Kassian who I would say can be top 6 guys at times and then a bunch of 3rd and 4th liners and a few AHLers.

Today once they are healthy. They have 4 legit top 6 players in McD, Leon, Nuge, Yamo. I believe that Athanasiou is also a top 6 guy. He scored 30 last year and had 20 goal paces the 2 previous seasons on a really bad team. So I believe they have 5 top 6 guys. Then you have Kassian and Neal as the tweeners. So they in my opinion can ice a top 6 that is pretty decent.

Then you factor in a Ennis who I think is a top 9 guy and can go up and down in your top 3 lines. What I also see as a positive is once they are completely healthy, that will allow them to either scratch or send down P.Russell who is an AHLer in my opinion. He tries hard but no goals in 45 games tells me you aren't an NHLer. Also once they are healthy, that will allow them to scratch a Kharia. So they will eliminate 2 guys, one an AHLer, the other a 13th forward who contribute nothing offensively and where the play dies on their stick.

So comparing the start of the season roster to now once they are healthy, the Oilers have added 3 fast, skilled forwards to their line up in Yamo, Ennis and Athanasiou. That's MASSIVE.

In addition, once Klef is back, I would sit Russell and go with:
Klef-Larsson
Nurse-Bear
Jones-Benning.

On every pair, you have left - right dmen. You have guys who can skate and guys who can move the puck on every pair. Plus every pair has a guy who can create at least some offense. Something they didn't have at the start of the year and something they have lacked for YEARS. When Green comes back, I would consider swapping him in for Benning. You still have the left-right combos. Then you have 4 out of 6 dmen who are good skaters, 4 out of 6 who can move the puck pretty well and 5 out of 6 who can provide some offense.

Since January, they have added 3 skilled forwards in Yamo, Ennis and Athanasiou and 2 skilled, good skating, puck moving dmen in Jones and Green. So that's 5 new good skating, skilled players to their line up. That's significant. There isn't enough time I assume to dramatically change the season numbers but I do wonder what the numbers will look like for the last month and a bit.

I'm too emotionally invested in the Oilers to ever bet against them - even where I am likely to win.

I have a standing bet with a friend who's a Leafs fan on games between Leafs & Oilers, and that's about as much betting as I can do on the team - I've paid out a lot more than I've got back on that one sadly.

However, a burger, yes - I am down for that. Send me an email and lets find a time!

Seems as though NHLPR doesn’t understand the new tiebreaker this year;

NHL Public Relations @PR_NHL
The @EdmontonOilers (37-24-8, 82 points) leapfrogged the idle Golden Knights (37-24-8, 82 points) for first place in the Pacific Division.

Despite identical records and games played, Edmonton holds top spot with more regulation plus overtime wins (EDM: 35, VGK: 34). #NHLStats

Despite their confusion, Oilers are at 31 Regulation Wins to Vegas’ 29, which is the 1st tiebreaker now, not Regulation plus Overtime Wins, after GP of course.

Vegas/Calgary. Who we cheering for here? 2 losses? A blowout either way would be good I suppose as long as it’s not a 3 point game.

Probably would prefer a Vegas win, in regulation of course.

They can come to Edmonton satisfied with themselves and if we beat them, we're back in 1st. Calgary can be more at risk of missing, which would be funny.

They can come to Edmonton satisfied with themselves and if we beat them, we're back in 1st. Calgary can be more at risk of missing, which would be funny.

The only unfortunate thing about Vegas in regulation is that it gets them a game closer in the tie breaker to us.

Good night so far though.

Sunday March 8;

Vegas wins in regulation. Minnesota wins in OT.
Calgary and Vancouver lose in regulation.

Pacific
VGK - 70GP 38-24-8 84 points
EDM - 69GP 37-24-8 82 points
CGY - 70GP 36-27-7 79 points

Wild Card
MIN - 69GP 35-27-7 77 points
VAN - 68GP 35-27-6 76 points
NSH - 68GP 34-26-8 76 points
WPG - 69GP 35-28-6 76 points
ARI - 69GP 33-28-8 74 points

The all female broadcast crew sees the Flames tie their game at 3 with 3 minutes to go in regulation, only for the Golden Knights to take the lead a minute and 50 seconds later and add an empty net goal and dash the Flames hope of a full comeback. Heh. Flames. VGK back on top the Pacific. Wild Card arguably gets even tighter with Vancouver now losing their game in hand.

When did Sportsnet start blacking out games?! I remember being able to watch Canucks games on SNPacific. As a hockey fan, this blacking out business is horse crap.

Important games for Monday March 9;
Vegas @ Edmonton
Arizona @ Winnipeg

Boy am I glad the Oilers somehow managed to create that 6 point gap over 9th. Keeps the mustiness of the games down slightly.

I think we can almost call Arizona out of the race and start cheering for them to take points off of actually playoff contenders.

NetBOG was right, it's the curse of Taylor Hall.

I was thinking about it with tonight’s post. Should Nashville and Vancouver win tomorrow it’ll be quite difficult for Arizona to jump the other teams with the remaining games. Possible. But darn difficult.

Some chatter out there, Dreger on NBC Hockey broadcast included, saying the NHL could suspend play/end regular season tomorrow then kick back up in mid April woth start of playoffs. How they’d decide who’s in, would be decided later.

Would be wild.

Just base standings off regulation wins and call it a day.

I’m going to suggest it is wildly optimistic to think everything will start up again in a month if the globalist plague is bad enough to stop damn near everything.

Read that schools are reopening in China now. To support optimism.
