3.2 AAV

Not too gross. Wish it was one year less.

I would have liked to see two years and a million a year less.

That looks like a contract we'll regret before the end of it. Par for the course though.

I don’t think that was ever going to happen. I just hope he can maintain his level of play.

If the Oilers get a good right winger through trade or free agency - where is Kassian playing?

If he's on the third or fourth line, he can't possibly justify that contract.

Not good. Many have proven they can score on that line. Should have moved him when he had value, and made somebody else the luckiest player in the league.

I'd be surprised if this isn't considered a mistake by the end of next season.

In 1.5 years when he’s on the third of fourth line and McDavid is bouncing pucks off the skates of someone younger, cheaper, and better, we’ll regret this one big time.

He’s more replaceable than management thinks. Whatever, typical Oilers move.

Now let’s go low-ball Nurse and be surprised when the negotiations get tough!

Nothing changes with this team. This is no different than MacT signing Benoit Pouliot for 5 years or Chiarelli signing Kris Russell for 4 years.

Kassian to date has never hit 30 points. This is insanity.

Here's the alternate perspective though:

Kassian's cap hit of $3.2 mil fits perfectly into their cap situation. Darnell Nurse will be after twice that cap hit at least, however.

SIGH.

If you consider him a 1st liner, it's a steal obviously. Consider him a 2nd liner, it's still really good value. So imo if he's still able to play 2nd line in the 3rd year, it's good contract. Like others said, maybe a year too long but overall I am good with this.

If we acquired a higher end right winger, are you bumping Yamamoto off the second line in favour of Kassian?

Here's what I don't understand the most about this contract and almost every other deal the Oilers have signed in the last 4-5 years and especially in the time since he signed his deal. Why is the team incapable of getting anyone else to buy in that McDavid is the golden ticket to a Stanley Cup win, and all they need to do to share in that is to take a little less. The management should be saying to every single player - McDavid took less to help make us successful - how are we supposed to tell him that we gave you a premium to be here? Take less too and help us be successful. We'll still commit spend to the cap - but we'll spend it in a way that makes us all successful - by bringing in better players to surround you with (and not overpaying them either). What would you prefer Zack? $13MM and no championships? or $10MM and a couple Cup rings on your fingers?

If I'm McDavid, everyone else getting overpaid is a slap in the face after I went back to Chia and told him I'm leaving money on the table in order to be successful. If they can't make the team successful because they keep overpaying the depth guys now, then that's a goddamn disgrace.

Yup, I've got no problem with it, but would have liked a year less term. He's an effective player 5x5. We've seen what he can do in the playoffs, he can play anywhere in the lineup and he doesnt look out of place in the top 6.

This isn’t Horcoff bad but it’s too long. Is it guaranteed that he gets a suspension tonight now?

Horcoff got $4.1MM/season after posting 73 points and leading all forwards in playoff scoring. He got $6.5MM AAV after a season where he had 51 points in 53 games before getting injured. He was a centre who won well over 50% of his draws and played responsibly both ways. Zack, a right winger with a bit of a troubled past, just tied his career high of 28 points. This is worse than Horcoff.

Horcoff was the best damn 3rd line centre in the league. Too bad he was also a drug cheat.

Per TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Bob McKenzie
@TSNBobMcKenzie

Kassian contract breakdown:

Year 1: $2.5M salary, $1M signing bonus.
Year 2: $2.5M salary, $1M signing bonus.
Year 3: $3.5M salary.
Year 4: $2.3M salary.

The contract does not include any type of no-trade protection.

For a guy who had his agent looking for a trade out of Edmonton a couple of years ago, this signing is shocking. And the guy is a winger, not a center or RH defensman or a goalie in his prime.

I respectfully disagree. Comparing the numbers is not fair; it should be compared as a % of the total cap.

And from all accounts, McDavid is pretty fond of Kassian. Who knows what input, if any, he had in this.

He really liked Maroon too. Big fan of Hall, I'm told as well. I don't think McDavid gets consulted on a lot of these decisions and honestly he probably shouldn't be.

I think Horcoff's $4.1MM contract wasn't bad - it made sense based on what he did during it - it was probably even a bargain. I think his next contract was a mistake but I think the biggest issue with it was that the Oilers signed it after he'd suffered a major injury and before they could see how he'd come back from it. He never was fully the same player again.

He was the top centre on the team for the bulk of his time through both of those contracts, and he was a valuable powerplay performer and leader even in his last season with the team. Yakupov played his best during the time he played with Horcoff and I don't think that was a coincidence.

There's a strong argument that Horcoff would have been a #2C on many teams at that time, but with Kassian, I think he's a #3RW on many teams right now - which makes this a more significant overpay in my eyes (not that it's a particularly easy comparison for anyone to make).

Trying to look on the bright side here. Kassian seems like he is a big part of the energy of the team. If he keeps that going, it's worth an extra million on the deal. Also, because he is an energy guy and has put up somebok seasons, maybe he is left unprotected in the expansion draft if the team is looking to offload him then.

Not that I am looking to get rid of the guy, but I don't hate this deal. I don't especially like it, but I don't hate it. Highly doubt he is in Edmonton at the end of it though.

I agree it may be 1 year too long. But for a guy who will go full road rage postal mode on just about anyone in the league. Then the price point really isn't that bad. If I was Kass i'd be punching M.T s chicklets out at puck drop and earn that contract starting tonight. The guy can skate, he has passion, and can finish. He turned his life around and became a fan favorite in the one place we all thought he couldn't. So props for that. I think he earned this payday. Now onto Nurse. I don't think he can expect anything higher then Klefbom. At least if I was GM that's my ceiling.

I like it and I know I’m in the minority here. I’ve said before what I see happening is Kassian taking the cap space vacated by Gagner’s contract heading into next year. Turns out I was pretty bang on.

I was a big Stiffler fan growing up... and I’ve always thought Zack looks like Seann William Scott. If I decide to spend some money on a jersey it’ll be a Kassian 44, or I guess I could just re-crest my Souray 44 that’s sitting in my closet.

I am fine with it, bordering on OK. Not thinking it is amazing but it isnt awful.
Money wise it is what it is. That seems to be right in line with guys who score a bit and bring some toughness. Length, like others, I wish it was 2 or 3 years. That said it isnt like the team has a long list of wingers waiting in the wings.
I would NEVER pay top dollar for a free agent winger. If anyone comes in that pushes Zack down it is likely to be a young guy, meaning cheap.

At this point the Oilers cant afford to spend more on wingers and they arent going to acquire a better/more versatile player than Kassian for 3.2/year, not even considering the plyer/pick cost to acquire said player.

This is exactly it. Kass is versatile. Yeah, you’re probably a better team if Kassian is on your 3rd line (in the sense that you’d have 2 right wingers who are even better) but having him playing with Connor is not a bad thing. He can skate, he can finish and likely more importantly for this team, he brings energy and I would bet he makes Connor feel a little safer out there.

I do realize as I say he CAN play the hockey, he has not done it consistently over his time here and throughout his entire nhl career.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. By year 3 of this contract, if not sooner, we will be whining about this contract. I thought Holland was smarter than this, but no.

Not to take away from this news, read above I’m clearly stoked on the news. But I’m excited to hear the next ones in Sheahan and Archibald just as much.

Just wait until Holland shows how "just as much"!

Is this a "hope Seattle takes him to get to the cap floor" type contract?

Because I'm great with this for two years.

I always want every player to take less but I don't hate the contract.

The reaction from the usual suspects is what I expected. The price range was set in the offseason for UFA forwards who are teens in goals, 30+ pts and are top 9 forwards.
Donskoi - 4 yrs 3.9 mill
Connelly - 4 yrs 3.5 mill
Tanev - Who's nothing more than a 3rd liner at best, 6 yrs - 3.5 mill with a modified no trade.
Compher - a bit younger but same production 4 yrs 3.5 mill.
Burakovsky - A bit younger , worst production but 1 yr 3.25
Calvert - Signing for th 18/19 season. Is definitely more of a 9-12 forward 3 yrs, 2.875.

There is just a few.

Many bloggers and fans in here were lobbying for the Oilers to sign Donskoi and Connelly last year and wouldn't bat an eye at what they got. Kassian gets less than all those guys and it's a bad deal.

The guys who complain about the contract are the same guys who complain about the Oilers letting guys go and how they lack depth. They are the same guys who have no issue about players like Donskoi and Connelly and whoever else who sign market value contracts with other teams but complain that the Oilers always miss out.

As I said, I always want players to take less than what the market dictates but there are very real comparable players to Kassian that set the price and he got less.

Donskoi is younger and has three 30+ point seasons to his name going in to this season. Kassian's never hit 30 points (he will this year likely) and he's hitting 30 in age next year. Donskoi isn't getting to play with McDavid either...I don't know how you see those as comparables.

Because I am not cherry picking the players I want to make my case. I looked at top 9 forwards who have recently signed that came to mind. I fully admit, I didn't look at every single team. I forgot to mention Ferland who signed for 4 yrs at 3.5 mill.

I looked for players who would be considered top 9 forwards who have mid to high teens in goals and 30+ pts. If you want to say Donskoi is slightly better, sure. He's almost making 700K more than Kassian.

Kassian's 2020 calendar year:

- Suspended for 9 games (two incidents)
- 23 games played
- 2 goals, 5 assists, 7 points
- 4 year contract extension at $3.2M per season

Think it is safe to say he's kind of return to his normal self after a heater to end 2019.

I believe he had low time on ice for forwards. I was wondering if he got hurt at some point without anyone noticing.
