Not going to score 6 every game. Good to see them win when they only score 2. Big boys got nothing tonight.

Koskinen looking solid again.

Nice to get the win but I think they need to practice shooting into an empty net more.

Haha. No doubt. Felt bad for Russell. That being said he played a good game. Thought he sniped one earlier off of the crossbar. It’ll come. Be a better story for his grandkids one day.

2 more points in the bank.

Get the job done, was a must win and they deposited 2 points in the bank tonight.

Wasn’t a pretty one again, but Mikko stood tall and the D played fairly well. Haven’t heard Tippet’s post gamer yet but interested to hear as it seemed better than Wednesday night but they were still not real sharp.

Personally really like the Bear-Nurse pairing, they compliment each other well and can both contribute offensively.

Koskinen solid again, the one that beat him was a deflection off of one of our players. That goal by Bear was a thing of beauty and the winner! First star tonight.

9.7% of the games into the season, the team has 14.58% of the points needed for playoffs. 149% of points required to make the playoffs, to date.

Of course I'll take an ugly win over a moral victory, but I'm not fully convinced yet about this team....

Yes agreed taking into account the defensive lapses for extended times and lack of bottom 6 production. Also special teams percentages and Neal are anomalies that will trend downward.

I really enjoyed the 2nd period. Felt like we were dominating them. Starting planning my Edmonton trip for the parade in June. But then the 3rd...same old same old. Over a dozen years now this team just seems to try to sit on a lead. They got away with it, but just barely. Some easy EN goals would be nice for a change. Or even better, stretch those 1-2 goals leads to 3 or 4. Don’t let up on what got you that lead.

Loving Kassian’s forecheck on that top line. The guy can move.

I wonder what the 80s Oilers advanced metrics look like. That would be cool to know. Would round out the research nicely.

I remember reading somewhere that they weren't actually that good, but they were just so much better at scoring goals than everyone else.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

I have been “tied up” so to speak since last night and this is the first opportunity since then to visit the site. I am overjoyed with the start, this season. I also think that it is a really neat feature that this forum provides in the way of the “pick the score contest.” Thanks to all and Go Oilers!

There's an article that talks about PDO for the 1984 Oilers and Islanders. Both well over 100, which would be chalked up to luck now if a team was doing that well, but they basically both had all-star teams. Gretzky had a shooting percentage of 26.6% which we'd be sure would regress - and to a point it did, that was the highest of his career, but that was one of a stretch of six out of seven years where Gretzky was over 20%. He took a lot of shots, but not for the amount of goals he scored. He was just lethal. His top season for shots was 1981-82 when he took 370 shots...that's the 42nd most in a single season in league history. Ovechkin has had more shots seven times, but never come close to the 92 goals Gretzky scored that season.

Some of that is probably goaltending - the position has evolved greatly since the early 80s, but even so - his contemporaries were shooting on the same goalies without anywhere close to the same production. Gretz was also +553 in his time with the Oilers...I'm going to guess he was probably a possession beast...
