I like how everything feels like the Oilers are always acting in a reactive way. A couple bad games and NOW it's time to do something. Constantly backed into a corner and looking for a way to fight out instead of noticing they're fighting into another new corner.

BINGO! It's like I have said many times: in hockey you can react, or dictate. All the Oilers do is react. They are like a dog chasing their tail. On the ice and in the boardroom.

Sure. I don't know, whatever. Spooner is a disaster and Rattie is just another tweener guy. Personally I don't think Puljujarvi or Yamo are ready but what do I know I guess.

Rattie was okay on the top line then got hurt then a new coach and bye bye, guess things don't change for him.

Spooner is brutal.

It should be Yamo and JP going down like others have been saying.

This.

Rattie will turn into an Aberg for another team if he gets picked up. I wish he could get like 2 or 3 games on the top line again, not getting shuffled around.

Just read this on twitter;

"Because Eberle was "too soft for the playoffs", Chiarelli responded to many Oilers fans criticisms by ensuring that the playoffs need no longer concern them."

Perfect, and hilarious, and just so sad but true

I agree. Rattie does much more than Yamo. Yamo doesn't belong in the NHL right now, he is way off, fingers crossed he ever will.

Spooner was on this path as soon as the trade was made. Funny, I saw Eberle play yesterday for the Isles, looked good, left thinking we could use a player like that...

Absolutely we could use Ebs. He’s looked good for sure, he’s looked himself.

Yams really is not close. I don’t know why they insist he stay with the big club right now. I get he’s not a big cap hit, but cmon. Don’t ruin him too.

So, effectively he turned Eberle to waivers. Wow.

Turned Eberle into an AHLer that has a 2.1M cap hit on our NHL roster this year and next seems like the most likely final tally.

The Oilers want to make sure their AHL farm team is stacked so that is why they got Spooner. Makes total sense now!!!

Maybe Spooner will refuse to report so they can terminate his contract. Still makes the trade a complete disaster but the money would be off the books.

Per CapFriendly’s twitter;

#Oilers have placed Spooner & Rattie on waivers. If both clear, & are assigned to the AHL, Oilers would still be $1.395M in full cap value above the ceiling.
By our calculation, that's the equivalent of 2 additional assignments, or a trade, in order to activate Sekera off LTIR.

The way Stauffer talks and he is the mouth piece of the team, when it comes to Sekera, he keeps saying IF Sekera comes back and IF he can play at the NHL level. I wonder if he is telegraphing that Sekera will be on LTIR all year.

Agree. All I’ve heard of in terms of Sek has been from Stauffer and it’s always IF, not when, and IF so he’d likely never be the same player. Understandably so.

Usually Stauffer starts pumping up something happening a few weeks in advance to get us all ready for it. He's not doing that with Sekera. Personally, I am OK if Sekera doesn't come back. He had a MAJOR knee injury after the playoffs and missed all the offseason, all of camp and half the season last year. Comes back and is brutal. He had almost a full offseason then blows out his Achilles, misses all of camp and more than half the season. I don't see how any player can miss that much hockey in 2 years at going to be 33 and come back.

I don't believe that Sekera's plan is to be shut down all season. He's been skating and travelling with the team, which would lead one to believe he sees himself as working on a return. Whether the Oilers know how to handle that or not is a big question mark, but it sure doesn't seem like he's giving up on the season, and there's so much of it left that I'd be shocked if he gets shut down, unless he re-aggravates something.

Desperate times call for desperate measures! The gong show continues. Spooner was almost completely useless ( Chia's fault of course, going to the Boston well ) but Rattie was an ok player. He could very well be the next Aberg on another team. Whatever this is, other than the league allowing the Oilers to play 2 goalies at the same time, it's more smoke and mirrors to give us the illusion of real change for the better and another desperate move to save face.
( In my not so humble opinion )

I've got an old Pentium 100 that has the entire trade tree history of the Oilers (including WHA), Flames (including Atlanta), and the Leafs through ~2005. Those things always interest me.

For what it's worth, keeping the Messier line going through 2019 is pretty good value.

Rattie and Spooner (EDM) on waivers

Start of something big?

FWIW and I do not claim this to be 100% for sure fact but....

I have mentioned my buddy who works for the Oilers a couple times in the past. He just texted me and claims to have NOT seen PC today.
I asked if that is normal.
His reply was that 9 home practice days out of 10 he would have seen him by now.

I will admit that it has given me some hope in a change coming today...

Could be he is just locked away in an office making some big move but I will keep my fingers crossed it isnt him that walks in for media time

@BeerLeagueHeroe seems to have quoted you to try to break the scoop...

You'd have thought that the Touchstone moment would have discouraged bloggers and tweeters from creeping Oilfans in hopes of learning some impending trade info...

While we're talking about Rattie and whether he's playing better than Yamo, what about Reider? Guy couldn't put the puck through a barn door, he's got the offensive instincts of a Igor Ulanov...

Oh man... saw a tweet about him, think with Ray Ferraro(?), asking if anyone with Edmonton watched him play in LA last year. ha.

I for sure thought he was a good signing for depth/secondary scoring.

This reminds me a Cam Barker, who reminds me of Whatshisname Manning.

I thought, when Barker was signed, "oh cool, the Oilers got a 3rd overall pick on the cheap. That's a positive step and it could pay". Then I saw him skate in the preseason and knew there was no chance he was an NHL player at that point. The guy just could keep up. Same thing for Manning. Who, at any point this season, thought this guy could play? It took me 14 seconds, as a mouth breathing tier 2 fan to know this. Why are paid scouts and GMs not figuring it out?

what about Reider?

I had the same thought when thinking about the woes of this organization. You would have thought the Reider signing was pretty safe given his past but somehow this team sucks the hockey sense and energy out of players. I think he makes over 2 M per season too which is another hefty overpay for what he brings. Rattie who is just as good or maybe even better, on the other hand, didn't cost the team much and was a good gamble by management I thought. He really wasn't given much of an opportunity after his injury. Not big and slow enough I guess.

Doesn't seem like anything is coming from this availability, post meeting, other than a few Hitch quotes and McDavid quotes.

McDavid saying "You guys are talking like the sky is falling." and feels that the team has to find a way to grind out wins and that there is no other way to turn this around.

Wait...what?!?

The Oilers announced a press availability today and then just sent out McDavid and Hitchcock to say that the sky isn't falling?! So basically, with the GM and management under fire, they just sent out the popular kid and the old coach to act as human shields.

That's not just an inadequate response, it's a downright cowardly one.

Don't worry though - Terry Jones has a solution! A Keith Gretzky/Ken Hitchcock management duo!!!

Even Stauffer tweeted in his schedule for Oilers now today, that they’d discuss the press conference... which didn’t happen BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PRESS CONFERENCE!

Wonder if this is how she went down;
“We’re doing it. Today’s the day. Pack your stuff Peter.”
“Uh, Kevin, aren’t you forgetting that video I have from Banff back in 2017?”
“... you’re right Peter. Call Mikko’s agent and tell him $13.5 over 3 is perfect.”

In hindsight, that corporate retreat was a terrible idea...
