Yep, one of few positives to take from that game is that Talbot came in and played well.
I also liked that they didnt give up and played some hockey in the last 40 mins.
I thought Rattie looked ok on the top line. I was critical of his play in the past and figured him to be a preseason champion but if Chiasson is hurt he should be next in line with the golden ticket.
Also, no empty net goal against, moral victory

For the negatives there are too many to list.
What is up with Larsson? He looks like Ryan Whitney over the last month or so.
For that matter, all 6 D did not have good games today. I think I could count on one hand how many controlled zone exits, either skating or passing, that group was responsible for.

Hitchcock can do a lot but he can't score goals. When we get behind more than one we are pretty well done! Five regulars out of the line up is a lot to overcome on a team that is so top heavy to begin with. The super goal tending and McDavid 4 or 5 point night didn't happen so Oilers lose, again, to the rebuilding young Canucks. Same old. Hard to imagine them being able to hold on to a playoff spot this season given the cards the team has been dealt. You need stellar goal tending every single night to have a prayer and that's just not likely to happen. Hard to watch.

Man, I was giving Klefbom the gears during the season, he might of masked a lot of depth problems this team had on D when he was playing 25 plus minutes a game. He can’t come back soon enough. I actually didn’t mind the few minutes Wideman played. Larsson just has to be average and I’m happy but he looks slow and not in it.

Didn't see the game.. but koskinen ..4 on 6 shots?

Bad time for Koskinen to fall back to earth. At least Talbot hasn't been left to rot and he has a shot to pick up the slack. We had chances, 3 posts, lots of McDavid chances in close. Gotta find a way to get some wins until some D come back.

This team is embarrassingly thin. On top of cutting ties with that genius (cant win a trade ) Gm we have, we also need to do a major clean up. I'd be shopping Draisaitl (assuming we had a GM who could fleece someone) for some damn parts to fix this sinking heep. The way he looks this season, by the time he's in year 4 of this deal, he might be mentally checked out. This guy doesn't seem to have a tonne of compete. 1/3 into the season and he looks gassed. It's too bad we couldn't pry Scheifele and one of their higher up D from WPG...
Watching most of the game, it seems its the same ol, same ol to me. Out team looks AHL to everyone elses NHL. Our D...terrible....Goaltending, has been strong except tonight. Forwards..outside of Connor, can't score....Same as last year....Yet we made minor changes. Why are we the only team in the NHL that stands pat when it's clear the team wasn't good enough. This frustrates the crap out of me. I've turned down so many free tickets cause in all honesty, why would I leave the comforts of my home to go and watch that garbage live...If tomorrow they announce Chaisson is gone for any length of time, we're done boys. That was our secondary scoring. Enough of this crap already....This team has become the official goat on the NHL, and as nice a kid as Connor is, eventually he'll say enough is enough.

Problem A - The current GM has handcuffed the team so badly that even if we acquired Super GM, Super GM could do very little for quite some time.

Problem B - The reputation this management group has made for itself, it’s doubtful Super GM would want to be a part of this mess. An organization with 3 former GM’s looking over his shoulder.

Problem C - Bob Nicholson is clearly just a “yes” man. He’s a huge part of the problem here.

Even the media getting restless now:

Here's Robin Brownlee before last night's game:

Quote:

Oilers' lines vs. Vancouver tonight
Chiasson-McDavid-Draisaitl -- 52 goals
Rieder-RNH-Puljujarvi -- 15 goals
Lucic-Brodziak-Kassian -- 6 goals
Zykov-Spooner-Rattie -- 4 goals

Quote:

Van lines vs. Edm
Eriksson-Horvat-Virtanen -- 35 goals
Goldobin-Pettersson-Boeser -- 34 goals
Granlund-Gaudette-Leivo -- 16 goals
Roussel-Beagle-Motte -- 9 goals

Note - this is not the comparison with Tampa Bay, or Toronto or Winnipeg or Washington. The Canucks have the 18th best record in the NHL, one point up on the Oilers after leapfrogging them last night. If the playoffs started today, they would be on the outside looking in.

And after the game:

Quote:

Fans are rightfully frustrated after four straight losses that have dropped the Oilers out of the playoffs, but if you're ripping coach Ken Hitchcock for that, your frustration is misplaced. Roster isn't good enough.

Quote:

There is no defending Pete Chiarelli's record as GM of the Edmonton Oilers. There is no need to wait for the Oilers to make or miss the playoffs this season to know this is true. Not a news flash. Over to you, Bob Nicholson.

Even Mark Spector seems to suggest Chiarelli's not quite up to snuff:

Quote:

The three lowest Oilers ice times thru 40:00 are the 3 players GM P.Chiarelli acquired to help this season: Zykov, Spooner and Wideman

The Oilers have the 4th, 13th and 49th highest scorers in the league. We talked before about McDavid being in on 52% of the Oilers goals, but what percentage is it if you look at Draisaitl & Nugent-Hopkins too? I'm guessing it's 75%+. That is an incredible reliance on three guys for all your offence. No wonder it doesn't work.

It might be somewhat excusable if the team had focused on developing the defence...buuuuuuut...we have articles today about the importance of the Oilers 5th or 6th best defenceman in Russell, sooooo...there's not much depth there either.

This team is a tire fire, and it's all management's fault. Tambellini would literally have done better to this point had he taken over when Chiarelli did and did his next-to-nothing...

About the only semi-hopeful thing is that when the Edmonton media finally starts really ripping into someone in the Oil org, it is a sign that something could finally be happening. At least, that's what I'm telling myself right now.

It's a sign that something is going to happen to appease the fans. Pray it's a blood-letting in management, and not a big trade...

Chia has to be removed before we even think about making some trades. GM's are just lined up to do another Hall for Larsson, or Strome for whoemever that guy is. No more ex Oilers, no more old gm's. We need a young in his years, wise, adaptive GM who can make smart changes. Get up back to having a little money in the bank, and surround Connor with talent. The situation is perfect to breed an amazing legacy.

Hitchcock today: "I think as a coach, you have to make a decision. You either want to win or you want to coach, because you can't do both," he said.

Slats did both, Eakins did neither. I don't understand what Hitch means by this statement, anyone out there care to explain?

Simple, is your priority to teach you players to be better and give them opportunities to go out and try to learn. In this case, your inexperienced players are going to cost you.

Or is your priority to win, and just play your best players to give yourself the best chance to win. In which case your inexperienced players aren't going to develop as fast or as much with limited opportunities.

Thanks Null, I was thinking something along those lines but you've clarified it quite well.

We're stuck in a Catch-22: if Hitch spends time coaching this team we most likely miss the playoffs for the 12th time in 13 years; but if he focuses on winning, the inexperience will ultimately lead to failure. Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

Good to see Hitch has outed the organizational failure of the GM/OBC in building a competitive team.
