Not gonna start panicking about the kid busting, but this is pretty disappointing. Guess he was pretty bad in the preliminary games and worked himself to the bottom of the roster for the WHC.

To his credit, he's been learning the North American game, North American ice. Perhaps he just has adjustment issues?

Interesting that they are playing non-NHLers over him. He may have been bad in the pre-tournament games, but it might also be that the coach is a Finnish league coach and wants to reward the players from that league, and it's easy to sit the 19 year old.

Hard to read too much in to that.

Having a hard time finding a story about it, but a Finnish poster on another place said the Fin WHC coach mentioned Pulju's complaint that he was getting no feedback from the coaches during his time in the AHL. That is something I really hope is not true. I know Pulju got benched during a game near the end of the season. He really seemed to tail off as his AHL season went on.

I think he'll be okay, he's got a great skill-set. But anyone penciling him in to score 30 in the NHL next year may want to hold off on that.

Looks like Pulju was sitting on the bench through the entire game vs Belarus today. 00:00 ice time on the stat sheet.

Not sure why they let him go over then, its embarrassing the kid.

The bit about about him not getting "feedback" in Bakersfield, its probably just him not understanding the Anglais.

I can think of worse ways to be embarrassed then getting a free vacation in Paris. He's only a injury away from ice time. Not a bad deal for the kid.

Well IMHO if he's only riding the pine over there, he might as well have been up in Edmonton riding the pine practicing with the Black Aces and soaking up playoff hockey over here.

Being from Finland the WHC might mean more to him then the Stanley Cup.

Pulju got 6 shifts in the 3rd in a lost game (Finland lost 5-1 to France). Pulju got 2 shots in that speck of ice time (5:38). Hopefully this stinky loss encourages a mix up of the lines that Pulju benefits from.

Holy crap.. Finns lost to ... France? What, did they give citizenship to a team full of Quebecers?

Hmmm...that sounds like one poorly coached team. Maybe we shouldn't be worried at all that he benched Puljujarvi. He may not know what he's doing at all.

Losing to a minnow - that happens once in a blue moon. It sucks, but sometimes a goalie steals a game. Getting blown out by a minnow? That says they brought the wrong team or the wrong coach or both.

Sounds like the Finnish coach is just brutal. From folks who watched the game, once Puljujarvi was put in, he was quickly their best player on the ice.

Buddy of mine still scouts. Was at the game and sent me a text that I shouldnt be worried. When he did get on the ice he had jump and looked to be engaged immediately.
Also said JP looked strong on the puck

Wasn't Aho - Laine - JP the killer line last year?
Wonder why they wouldn't at least put 2/3 of it back together.

So, he got 13 mins. 4 shots (most of the team). No points.

Fins were up 3-0 and tried to sit on the lead in the 3rd. Pulju got less than 3 mins in the 3rd while the coach tried to give the vets all the time to close the game out. They choked the 3 goal lead and it went to OT. Pulju had a good chance in OT, but got blatantly tripped, shoulda been a penalty shot or PP, but refs missed it. Unfortunately he hit the post on his chance in the SO and Fins end up losing 4-3.

Well, sounds like it's going to be a short tournament for them. Although, the way it's going they may need to win the last game to avoid relegation. What an embarrassment.

Whilst that would be funny, I'd rather Finland not get relegated, as I'd be very scared of the result when they face the newly promoted Team GB in pool 1A. They've got 4 games left 2 of which are against teams below them and then the Swiss and Canada. They'll win 2 of those and stay up I'd say.

Considering Finland has beaten both Slovenia and Belarus I dont see it likely they will be relegated. Missing the playoff round I however could see happening.

Well other than the shootout, sounds pretty much exactly like how Game 5 went here, so at least he's not missing out on any playoff experience by being over there.

Ouch. Davis Staples said he had a good game just before this one. Guess the Fin coach saw the opposite.

The rather astute Ray Ferraro mentioned during a third period power play for the Finns that Puljaarvi doesn't seem to know where he is supposed to be most of the time, but he is still pretty young and probably will eventually figure it out... anyways, Finland is up 2-0 on the USA about 7 minutes into the third period, and Johnny Gaudreau has been pretty much invisible, too...

Big. Game. Johnny.

Maybe we are being too harsh on the little guy. He was stellar against hockey powerhouses Denmark, Italy and Latvia.

Who can forget his domination against the NHL best at the All-Star game?

He's easily Top 5 in the entire League when it comes to no-hit 3 on 3 hockey.

Saw a bit of the game today. Pulju looked OK. Kid definitely needs to rebuild his confidence. Hope he has a good summer.

And in other news, Drai finally stopped playing competitive hockey for a while. Probably played around 120 games since last summer? Rest well earned.

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/blog-puljujarvi-finland-fall -to-russia/c-289546512?tid=281885062

...."Oilers prospect Jesse Puljujarvi and Team Finland lost to Russia 5-3 in the bronze-medal game of the 2017 IIHF World Championship.

Puljujarvi played 16:44 in the loss. Puljujarvi finished the tournament playing eight games, registering 16 shots and four penalty minutes. "....

.....I don't think there is much to get excited about either way over Puljujarvi's performance at the IIHF tournament....the Finns looked rather poorly organized compared to what we usually see from them at international tournaments, and they didn't seem to get their act together until the last half of the bronze medal game against the Russians....looked to me like Puljujarvi was basically a send liner today...

....I still think Puljujarvi will be a solid NHL'er, given the right coaching and playing opportunities....he still is very young, and has to deal with language, culture, hockey, and other issues....he's on a pretty steep learning curve...
