"[It was] really cool to throw on the Oilers gear, the gear that I want to play the rest of my life wearing. It was pretty cool to put it on. With all the history, it was a lot of fun." - Connor McDavid, July 1, 2015

If they waive most of their current blueline group, I might actually believe that they're trying to improve the team.
"There's no greater springboard to development than failure." - Craig MacTavish, April 13/15.

"Sabres think the suck is their ally? They merely adopted the suck. The Oilers were born in it...molded by it."

This is a case of addition by subtraction. Best of luck Corey, and don't spend your windfall all in one place.
5 Cups and counting.

It wasn't that long ago that he was one of the bright spots back there. Or so it seemed.

Let's be realistic here, anytime the words 'Corey Potter' and 'bright spot' are uttered in the same sentence, you've got issues on the backend!! lol
On ANY other NHL team he would be challenged to even crack the lineup!!
Am I way off here?
"McDavid is as good as I’ve seen in the last 30 years, the best player to come into the league in the last 30 years." Gretzky
"I think it goes without saying that there is a lot of pressure on me," McDavid

Agreed 100%, I would argue 3 out of our 6 dmen, as well as most of our bottom 6 forwards would struggle to make any of the top say 18-20 teams.
Our depth is shocking, as is the number of AHL players who play for us.........

The sad thing about this is that I think he's better than all but four of the Oilers' defenders, which suggests more management incompetence. Maybe he asked to be waived. He looked good in all the games I saw him in.
All in all, not really a big deal. It's kind of like getting upset over someone incorrectly identifying the mouldiest apple.
2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

You must have been smoking something stronger than me if you think Potter was a bright spot. When the most memorable part of your tenure is the announcer getting tongue tied when you scored... you didn't do a heckuva lot.

Look up the stats. Last I seen Oilers had won close to 70% of games Potter played in.
Potter is not the problem here. It's Eakins, all Eakins.

Potter was part of the problem as is Eakins and most of the D. They need to start waiving roster D before it makes a difference though.

Really? Are you sure you're not just looking at the pre-season games? (I'm not being sarcastic. If any Oiler who has played more than a dozen games has won 70% of the games in the past 3 seasons, I'd be shocked.)

Oilers 9-7 with Potter in the lineup:

I doubt there's many Oilers who can boast that the team is over .500 when they play!

Its amazing how Potter got brought in during the Tom Renney years and he managed to stay here this long.
McDavid just might surpass Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr and heck even Elvis!

I am not going to go and search it out, but when Potter first came here, he looked good and most of us here were pretty happy with him. Was that an indication of how bad things were at the time, or is this a case of yet another player that the Oilers completely failed to develop?

He came here when they were trying to fail. Keep that in mind. He was good for what he was/is; a player that no other team or coach gave a serious shot at making the NHL. Over three seasons he proved to be an admirable replacement level d-man for the team. But if people are upset that Potter's been waived the day before trade deadline day... we got issues of expectations from the team.

I think I've done more analysis on Corey Potter than anyone on this forum, and I'm not surprised he was picked up. The Bs gain a number eight defenceman, and the Oilers lose their number five.
One of the issues with Potter was that he had the odd mental lapse, which can cost a guy a reputation, and I think that's what happened here. He could have been more focus and more anticipatory, other than that, the full skill set was there.

I honestly feel Potter owes Fedun a debt of gratitude for breaking his leg that season. Both were playing during preseason and Fedun was looking much better then Potter, at least to me, when he got injured. At that point it seemed Potter was kept around because he was the best of the worst that was left. Size probably had a bit to do with it as well but for my money Fedun was (and still may be) a better d-man.

Potter is a serviceable 7/8 dman and performed as such.
Our D issues go much deeper. We have no #1 dmen .. none.
