According to Gregor

"JF Jacques signs one year deal worth 615,000."

Arbitration did not really make sense for JFJ, this deal does. Obviously the question is how long can he stay healthy.

$550,000. So just a slight raise (by NHL standards not mine). I say if any Oilfan member gets a $65,000 raise they host a OFNO!

Edit - Math corrected. I feel more shame that a guy from GP had to correct me than I do for cheating.

I say looking by the responses in this thread someone should host a summer school first. Look below for clarification. rtft

It's funny...you wish that just once the Oilers would lock up the key guys first...I wonder if other teams sign their depth players first too? I guess we wouldn't really notice.

It definitely seems the Oilers model has always been to sign all the supporting cast and then take all summer to get the key guys to put pen to paper. But then, maybe that has more to do with agents having the ability to negotiate...a guy like Jacques had very little leverage.

Well I'm glad that some signing are happening for us.. although not the top players. But shows that are working. I would rather have this then not hear anything for a month, then i'd get worried.

Au contraire, in the past, the Oilers would always hunt for the big fish, while letting good role players go for nothing. Then when we didn't land the big fish, we would scramble to get a supporting cast. This year, we did it right. Sign your supporting cast, and if you don't get a big fish, let the kids play and learn. We're nearly there, a #4 defenseman, and a veteran third liner, and we should be there. Pens, Horc and Hemmer can start on the top line, Gags and a couple kids on the second. Brule, Cogs, Jacques, Fraser, Storts, Jones, Mac. May have to trade Cogs to make room for a third liner now. Funny how a decent all around player like Pouliot is unceremoniously dumped, but a guy who has speed and size and thats it, gets a contract. I think there is a definite premium on physicality in the new nhl.

It's probably just easier to get the pluggers signed.

Yeap, happy to have a seat secured. Guys like Gagner and Cogliano would have a much easier time if they became UFAs.

Anyone know if its a 1-way or 2-way deal? Can't seem to find the info anywhere. Hoping its a 2-way, Jacques might okay on a call-up/as-needed basis but I really don't see where he fits on this team at this point (not commenting on the last 109 games with 12 total points and -32 rating).

Frankly, why sign this guy, what does he bring that we haven't already addressed??

He missed 33 games last year and still ended the season as far and away the guy with the most hits on the team. He has been plagued with injuries, but Jacques is the best banger we have in the system, and probably the best skater amongst our third and fourth line players. He needs work, and certainly is a work in progress and I think that's one of the reasons it is a one year deal. If Renney can't make some of that progress this season, then this is his last Oilers contract.

But if he can stay healthy, he's valuable on the third or fourth line.

I wonder why we didnt sign a healthy version of jacques, stone, to the same money? maybe they see more upside in jacques, but they were the same guy last year, imo.

How many guys were there in the NHL who averaged 3 hits a night or greater? I would hazard a guess that's a pretty low number. I'm sure if the Oilers could get Cal Clutterbuck, they'd love to have him, but A) he's more expensive ($1.4MM cap hit over the next three years) and B) Minny won't let him go.

The fact is, Jacques was 56th in the league in hits, despite playing less games than anyone on the list above him (by far - the closest to him in games played was Darrel Powe for Philly who played 14 more games and had only 25 more hits), despite playing in Edmonton, where the stats keepers are notoriously stingy about things like hits (some cities have much more generous stats keepers and hand out hits for every incidental contact).

The next highest Oiler was Gilbert Brule with 117 hits in 65 games good for 131st in the league...well off Jacques pace.
