I’ve been to every Jersey retirement night and framed the tickets with a mini banner. To this point I’ve been to more retirement games than Lowe, who ducked out of the Messier retirement ceremony because he wasn’t brave enough to face the crowd after he traded Smytty earlier in the day. Now me and Lowe will be tied. I won’t be at that game.

Congrats to Kenny though. Well deserved.

I'm literally stunned.

Looking at the list of players on the outside looking in, it's shocking that someone like Lowe is inducted. I didn't, and still don't, think he is a players worthy of HHOF or number retirement.

The only thing I can really think of is that with the induction of Carbonneau last year and Lowe this year, that the selection committee is placing a greater emphasis on defensive specialists. Does that open the doors for guys like Jere Lehtinen, Mike Peca, Adam Foote, Glen Wesley, etc.? Probably locks in sub-1000 point players like Patrice Bergeron, Pavel Datsyuk, and Jonathan Toews.

Anyways, the argument I had against retiring his jersey is gone I guess (HHOF requirement), so it's going to happen, and it won't be enjoyable to watch or look at.

One positive: I guess Hamilton's number won't look so out of place now though.

The other silver lining? We'll pretty much HAVE to trade Russell away now. Need that jersey back pronto!

Other than team success, what drives the case to have Lowe admitted to the Hall? That's what I don't get. Not great points, not exactly air-tight defensively always - the Oilers allowed a LOT of goals against, and Huddy/Coffey were better for +/-. He had some toughness, but lots of players have that.

I saw arguments about leadership and culture building but the team had Gretzky and Messier. We see so many comments about Mess as the greatest leader ever, and Messier says Gretzky was the best leader he ever played with. How critical is Lowe then?

I don't get it - other than he's got buddies on the selection committee.

Lowe was the narrator for The Boys on the Bus. That has to be a big argument in his favour.

Also, now I think there is a great case for Huddy to get the call. Too bad no one like +/- as a stat anymore.

I'm not against this if only because it'll force the Oilers to acknowledge a time after 1992.

As a player it's deserved, 6 rings top 2 and 4 D throughout his career, captained. He is a hall of famer.

As an executive? He's been terrible, boorish, and grossly incompetent and YET he still has a job with the Oilers...... but but BUT you know he doesn't have a hand in day to day hockey operations... SUUUURE KLowe... sure.

As a player, yep, Hall of Famer!

Executive, he's the worst of the worse... like almost worst as Milbury bad. However he did pull those trades in 06... which ranks up high with me... everything else... blech...

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Remember, He's been involved with every Team Canada which had NHLers since 2000. This is a hybrid player/builder induction, much like Doug Wilson.

Kurri - former Oiler teammate
Gartner - former Ranger teammate
Davidson - buddy of Gretzky
Robitaille - buddy of Gretzky
Clarke - some Team Canada cross-over I believe
Francis - peer, Team Canada cross-over?
Larionov - peer, friend of Gretzky
Hedberg - peer
Mike Murphy - assistant coach of the Rangers for some of Lowe's time there
Burke - good friend of Lowe's pre-Penner, and then patched up things after death of his son

How many members of the 1984 Cup winning team do they bring back for the celebration of Lowe's number retirement? There's a gap in the schedule since next year is the 35th anniversary of the Smith own-goal, and the 30th anniversary of the 1991 last hurrah team that fell to the North Stars, so not a lot of reasons to assemble the troops next year other than Lowe's party...unless maybe the 40th anniversary of upsetting the Habs in the first round is a big enough deal...

I saw Cujo's named mentioned in the potentials for this years HHOF draft, I'd much rather he go in than Weight.

I think some of the reason as to why we don't celebrate that era is that due to the financial constraints we were under and coming off the back of the dynasty all our better players left. This was mainly due to wanting more money, and it left us supporting those that were like us the fans loyal to the club and we can't say that Smytty wasn't loyal at that point.

Part of 6 Stanley Cup teams and identified as a key guy on all of them. 7 All-stars appearances, member of a Canada Cup team. Seems like an Hall worthy resume to me. I think there is guys in there with worse resumes that Lowe's.

Now that Kevin Lowe is in, which Boy on the Bus is next to be pushed for HHOF / jersey retirement by the Edmonton media and Oilers Alumni?

Smytty will always be in my Hall Of Fame !

Never understood the love for Smyth and not Weight in this town.

I think this is only part of it. There's definitely a tendency to celebrate the successes more, and the 80s crew had massive success. But they are all over the organization still, and they had almost no connection to that team of the 90s. They were all in LA and NY and would just come play here occasionally.

Some of the second tier from then - Ranford, Tikkanen - were still here for a few years of it, but they missed the good parts, really just here for the 4 years of no playoffs. The upsets in 1997 and 1998 didn't mean much to Gretzky, Messier, etc. because they were busy with their own careers at the time. At the end of that decade, Lowe and MacTavish come back and take over the team, so they're all invested again (although likely won't ever celebrate those first few years because A) there was no success and B) everyone who left, Lowe and MacTavish pissed off first.

It'll be interesting to see how the Hemsky/Horcoff/Hall/Eberle era gets remembered too. Almost no one has been happy here by the time they left, and the team's done so many hatchet jobs on reputations after players leave that they may have burned a lot of bridges. Maybe all we can hope for is that the current team actually wins some Cups so that they don't leave in misery too, with McDavid hating the team for wasting his prime.

Remember, He's been involved with every Team Canada which had NHLers since 2000. This is a hybrid player/builder induction, much like Doug Wilson.

It occurs to me that the big jersey retirement push from several Edmonton media guys came right around the time the Committee would have been voting on this. I think this was something that the Oilers & Lowe campaigned hard for. The time was ripe - weak draft class no matter what, and a selection committee that was stacked with friends of Lowe & Gretzky's. It really was a perfect storm for them.

Gregor mentioning now that Carbonneau got in last year and Lowe this year to maybe the HHOF looking at adding more defensive players. I think that's a mistake. Most of those players just aren't as good - if they were, they would contribute more at both ends of the rink.

If Kevin Lowe can be in the HHOF, then Kevin Federline can be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I do wonder if anyone who voted against Kevin Lowe did it because they weren't happy with his involvement with the Oilers management since their bad run? He was voted in as a player, what he did as a manager has nothing to do with his accomplishments as a player. If you are going to say Lowe isn't hall worthy because of his involvement in Oilers management then do you think Gretzky isn't a hall of famer because he tried coaching and wasn't good at it?

No Cups

He's been passed over 19 times so I think Kevin Lowe is just not some hockey legend, despite what happened yesterday.

Conspiracy theory: Wayne made some phonecalls.

Nope. Also as previously mentioned, Wayne got in to the HOF before he ever coached a game.

And Lowe was a terrible hockey player. He only learned to pass backhand in the late 90s. This is a travesty of unbelievable proportions.

Well I guess that means you won't be going to his plaque if you ever visit the hall.

Maybe there is an automatic termination clause in Russell's contract if Lowe gets into the Hall. Russell got a little more money in exchange for the clause. Russell didn't think it would happen at least for the length of the deal.
